Variability of Pornographic Content Consumed and Longest Session of Pornography Use Associated With Treatment Seeking and Problematic Sexual Behavior Symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Most of the previous studies on problematic pornography use and related behavior have focused on such descriptors of pornography use habits as frequency or time devoted to pornography use. AIM: We argue that this constitutes a narrow view and indicators that characterize other aspects of explicit content consumption, namely (i) longest session of pornography viewing (which may be related to binge behavior), as well as (ii) variability of consumed pornographic content, can also be useful indicators. METHODS: An online study based on a sample of 132 heterosexual men seeking treat

SSRIs and SNRIs: broad spectrum of efficacy beyond major depression.

Originally studied and introduced for the treatment of depression, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) have proven effective for a broad range of psychiatric illnesses, including several anxiety disorders, bulimia, and dysthymia. These drugs have in common important effects on the serotonergic (5-HT) neurotransmission system, which is involved in mediating a substantial number of important functions, including mood, aggression, sexual behavior, and pain. In addition, some of the new antidepressants, like venlafaxine/venla

Body dysmorphic disorder, pathological gambling, and sexual compulsions.

This article focuses on body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), pathological gambling, and sexual compulsions within the realm of obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. These three disorders affect sizable numbers of the population, have an early age at onset and chronic courses, and seem to have a preferential response to serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs). They also have a high comorbidity with obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and other impulse control disorders. BDD patients lie more toward the compulsive/risk-aversive end of the dimensional model of obsessive-compulsive spectrum diso

Hypermethylation-associated downregulation of microRNA-4456 in hypersexual disorder with putative influence on oxytocin signalling: A DNA methylation analysis of miRNA genes.

Hypersexual disorder (HD) was proposed as a diagnosis in the DSM-5 and the classification 'Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder' is now presented as an impulse-control disorder in ICD-11. HD incorporates several pathophysiological mechanisms; including impulsivity, compulsivity, sexual desire dysregulation and sexual addiction. No previous study investigated HD in a methylation analysis limited to microRNA (miRNA) associated CpG-sites. The genome wide methylation pattern was measured in whole blood from 60 subjects with HD and 33 healthy volunteers using the Illumina EPIC BeadChip. 8,852 miRNA

A controlled study of Tourette syndrome. IV. Obsessions, compulsions, and schizoid behaviors.

To determine the frequency of obsessive, compulsive, and schizoid behaviors in Tourette syndrome (TS), we prospectively questioned 246 patients with TS, 17 with attention-deficit disorder (ADD), 15 with ADD due to a TS gene, and 47 random controls. The comparative frequency of obsessive, compulsive, and repetitive behaviors--such as obsessive unpleasant thoughts, obsessive silly thoughts, echolalia, palilalia, touching things excessively, touching things a specific number of times, touching others excessively, sexual touching, biting or hurting oneself, head banging, rocking, mimicking others,

Borderline personality disorder in Trichotillomania and skin picking disorder: a survey study.

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity studies in trichotillomania and skin picking disorder (known as Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors, BFRBs) have traditionally not examined rates of borderline personality disorder. When it co-occurs, borderline personality disorder may necessitate different treatment approaches and if untreated may interfere with the response to the treatment for trichotillomania or skin picking disorder. The objectives of this study were to (1) examine the rate of co-occurring borderline personality disorder in BFRBs; and (2) explore associations between co-occurring borderline personal

The Suitability of Different Subtypes and Dimensions of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder for Treatment with Anterior Capsulotomy: A Long-Term Follow-Up Study.

OBJECTIVE: Anterior capsulotomy (AC) is sometimes used as a life-saving treatment for patients with treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (Tr-OCD). Most of the previous studies have assessed only total symptoms and have concluded that AC is a safe and effective procedure. Few of these studies have focused on meticulously investigating the variety of results obtained from patients with different subtypes of OCD. This study reviewed the long-term effects of AC on patients with OCD and analyzed the dissimilarity between particular subtypes of the disease in order to determine which g

Clinical characteristics and psychiatric comorbidity in males with exhibitionism.

BACKGROUND: This study was constructed to detail the demographic and phenomenological features of males with exhibitionism. METHOD: Male subjects with DSM-IV exhibitionism were administered a semistructured interview to elicit demographic data and information on the phenomenology, age at onset, and associated features of the disorder. Subjects also underwent structured clinical interviews to assess both Axis I and Axis II comorbidities. Data were collected from September 2003 to March 2005. RESULTS: Twenty-five males with exhibitionism (mean +/- SD age = 35.0 +/-13.1 years [range, 14-68 year

From hyper- to hypo-: ADHD medications & sexual dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Although attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder's (ADHD's) impact on academic and social outcomes is well documented, its influence on sexual health, especially in adolescents, remains poorly understood and adolescents with ADHD are at higher risk for high-risk sexual behaviors (HRSBs) and sexual dysfunction, which prior research has indicated may be somewhat influenced by medication. AIM: To define the relationship between ADHD treatment and sexual dysfunction in adolescents, focusing on the effects of stimulant versus non-stimulant medications and gender differences. METHODS:

Intrusive Mental Images Resembling Psychosis in a Patient With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may be present with distressing intrusive thoughts, urges, or images. When the content is violent, sexual, religious, or linked to magical thinking, severe OCD can be mistaken for psychosis. We present a 19-year-old man with a six-year history of ego-dystonic intrusive harm-related thoughts and images focused on family members, along with checking, touching, counting, reassurance seeking, religious mental rituals, and sexual obsessions. Symptoms began at age 13 after he read about asthma, and later developed a recurrent fear that his maternal grandmother mig

A naturalistic exploratory study of the impact of demographic, phenotypic and comorbid features in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the impact of gender, age at onset, phenotype and comorbidity in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in children. In this naturalistic study we consider these characteristics of OCD in the framework of the 4 OCD phenotypes (contamination/cleaning, order/symmetry, obsessions/checking and hoarding) proposed by Leckman et al. Symptom dimensions in obsessive-compulsive disorder: from normal cognitive intrusions to clinical obsessions.

Cognitive behavioral models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) assume continuity between normal obsessional intrusive thoughts (OITs) and obsessions. However, this assumption has recently been criticized. This article examines this issue using a new instrument (the Obsessional Intrusive Thoughts Inventory, INPIOS) specifically designed to assess the frequency and content of 48 OITs, which was completed by 734 community subjects and 55 OCD patients. Confirmatory factor analysis suggests six first-order factors included in two second-order factors, one containing aggressive, sexual, religiou

[Rat man. A review].

We will focus on one of the key cases analyzed by Freud, the one he himself named the "Rat Man" (fictional name for patient Ernst Lanzer) and analyzed as an "obsessive neurosis". As in the Dora case, in this clinical case Freud intends to describe the prototype of obsessive neurosis in which no element is missing. Everything is there: sexual and forbidden thoughts that obsess the subject, aggressive thoughts towards the people he loves (especially the one called the "lady" and his own father), the sense of duty and debt that are imposed in the form of an expensive constraint, etc. However, a c

Introduction to the special issue: Culturally sensitive approaches to conceptualization and treatment of psychiatric disorders.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for a variety of psychiatric disorders. However, historic underrepresentation, misapplication of techniques, and neglected consideration for the unique experiences of marginalized groups-including racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender minorities-have led to mistrust of mental health treatment among these communities and decreased access to quality, evidence-based care. Although these treatments are not inherently harmful to individuals with marginalized identities, clinicians can cause harm if they do not consider the role of culture in

Personality features and expressed concerns of adolescents with eating disorders.

Differences between adolescent females diagnosed with either anorexia nervosa (n = 26) or bulimia nervosa (n = 30) were investigated using the Millon Adolescent Personality Inventory (MAPI; Millon, Green, & Meagher, 1982). About half of the total sample displayed an inhibited (avoidant) personality style. Anorexics scored higher than did bulimics on the Respectful (Compulsive) personality scale. Expressed concerns over self-concept, personal esteem, and sexual acceptance were common in the total sample. The behavioral correlates of MAPI score profiles indicated that few bulimics, and none of t

Sex, Sexual Orientation, Gender Atypicality, and Indicators of Depression and Anxiety in Childhood and Adulthood.

The current study evaluated the possibility that greater negative mental health outcomes reported among gay, lesbian, and gender-atypical individuals, compared to gender-typical individuals, are present in childhood and persist into adulthood. Sex and sexual orientation differences in self-reported adulthood and recalled childhood indicators of depression and anxiety and their association with current and retrospectively reported gender (a)typicality were examined in a non-clinically recruited community sample of Canadian heterosexual men (n = 98), heterosexual women (n = 142), gay men (n = 28

Who becomes addicted and to what? psychosocial predictors of substance and behavioral addictive disorders.

A multitude of psychological and social factors likely contribute to the development and maintenance of addictive disorders. As different people develop different addictions, it is important to understand whether psychosocial factors are related differently to different types of addictive disorders. In this study, we examined the unique interaction of personality traits, family environment, and life events in predicting substance (drugs, alcohol) and behavioral (gambling, sex) addictive disorders, among 207 participants suffering from an addictive disorder and 79 controls. Results identified s

The Role of Attachment, Childhood Traumatic Experiences and Gender in Men and Women with Compulsive Sexual Behavior Symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: Research on the association of childhood traumatic experiences and attachment styles with symptoms of Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) so far showed inhomogeneous results. This study aims to investigate the associations of these factors and their interaction with gender. METHODS: Within a cross-sectional study design, we collected a German convenience sample (n = 154, 73.4% women) online and tested the association of attachment style (Experiences in Close Relationships Revised, ECR-R), childhood traumatic experiences (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, CTQ), gender as predi

Experiential Avoidance as a Mediator of the Relationship between Dispositional Mindfulness and Compulsive Sexual Behaviors among Men in Residential Substance Use Treatment.

The present study sought to extend compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) and mindfulness research by testing whether dispositional mindfulness negatively related to CSB among men with substance use disorders (SUD) through experiential avoidance. Dispositional mindfulness is believed to decrease experiential avoidance, a correlate of CSB. We therefore hypothesized that dispositional mindfulness would relate to CSB indirectly through experiential avoidance. We reviewed medical records from 175 men in residential treatment for SUD. Results revealed significant indirect effects of dispositional mindful
