Advanced Computational Modeling and Machine Learning for Risk Stratification, Treatment Optimization, and Prognostic Forecasting in Appendiceal Neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal neoplasms account for less than 1% of gastrointestinal cancers but are increasing in incidence worldwide. Their marked histological variations and differences create multiple challenges for prognosis and management planning, as current staging systems are limited in certain aspects for capturing the entire disease complexity. METHODS: We synthesized data from 18 large observational studies, including 67,001 patients diagnosed between 1973 and 2024. Using advanced computational modeling, we combined multiple statistical methods and machine learning techniques to improve

Exploring inter-trial coherence for inner speech classification in EEG-based brain-computer interface.

Objective. In recent years, electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) applied to inner speech classification have gathered attention for their potential to provide a communication channel for individuals with speech disabilities. However, existing methodologies for this task fall short in achieving acceptable accuracy for real-life implementation. This paper concentrated on exploring the possibility of using inter-trial coherence (ITC) as a feature extraction technique to enhance inner speech classification accuracy in EEG-based BCIs.Approach. To address the objective,

A computational fluid dynamics simulation framework for ventricular catheter design optimization.

In this research an optimization methodology and 3D computational fluid dynamics algorithm were coupled to reach an important design objective for ventricular catheters: uniform inlet flow distribution. The optimized catheter design presented significantly improves on previous designs explored in the literature and on standard catheter designs used clinically. The automated, iterative fluid simulation framework described in this work can be used to rapidly explore design parameter influence on other flow-related objectives in the future.

In pursuit of unraveling novel structural inhibitors for treating monkeypox virus, targeting the VP37 protein, which is bioactive in response to ST-246, to discern pharmaceutical molecules specifically tailored to combat monkeypox virus. We employed a semi-flexible molecular docking, molecular dynamic simulation, and ADME screening methodology, which are based on structure, to screen compounds from CMNPD and TCM in silico. These methodologies allowed us to find potential candidates depending on their binding values and interactions with the binding site of main protease. To further evaluate th

Psychological tests for measurement of mental functions in individuals exposed to neurotoxicants and noise.

According to Sternberg's additive factors methodology two computer tests have been prepared in the Work Psychology Department of IOM. Several studies which allowed the assessment of effectiveness of experimental factors, manipulation and psychometric tests characteristics have been carried out. As well, effectiveness of experimental factors manipulation as reliability of both tests (IPT-Perception and IPT-Memory) appeared to be satisfactory. So these techniques are good enough to recommend using these tests in psychological examinations.

Analysing Adverse Event Databases: Principles, Challenges, and Examples.

BACKGROUND: Databases of reported adverse events after vaccination are used to detect alarming signals by qualitative methods (case series) and quantitative methods (the proportional reporting ratio). OBJECTIVE: This methodological-empirical paper explores several key questions: How useful are these databases for detecting alarming signals? To which study design do they correspond? Which measure of association should be computed? Which key biases might operate, and what can be done to avoid or reduce them? METHODS: A contemporary methodological tool-causal diagrams-was used to answer these q

Bayesian spatio-temporal modelling for infectious disease outbreak detection.

The Bayesian analysis of infectious disease surveillance data from multiple locations typically involves building and fitting a spatio-temporal model of how the disease spreads in the structured population. Here we present new generally applicable methodology to perform this task. We introduce a parsimonious representation of seasonality and a biologically informed specification of the outbreak component to avoid parameter identifiability issues. We develop a computationally efficient Bayesian inference methodology for the proposed models, including techniques to detect outbreaks by computing

An innovative index to incorporate transcriptomic data into weight of evidence approaches for environmental risk assessment.

The sharp decrease in the cost of RNA-sequencing and the rapid improvement in computational analysis of eco-toxicogenomic data have brought new insights into the adverse effects of chemicals on aquatic organisms. Yet, transcriptomics is generally applied qualitatively in environmental risk assessments, hampering more effective exploitation of this evidence through multidisciplinary studies. In view of this limitation, a methodology is here presented to quantitatively elaborate transcriptional data in support to environmental risk assessment. The proposed methodology makes use of results from t

Semivariogram and Semimadogram functions as descriptors for AMD diagnosis on SD-OCT topographic maps using Support Vector Machine.

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a degenerative ocular disease that develops by the formation of drusen in the macula region leading to blindness. This condition can be detected automatically by automated image processing techniques applied in spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) volumes. The most common approach is the individualized analysis of each slice (B-Scan) of the SD-OCT volumes. However, it ends up losing the correlation between pixels of neighboring slices. The retina representation by topographic maps reveals the similarity of these structures

A methodology to modify land uses in a transit oriented development scenario.

Developing nations are adopting transit oriented development (TOD) strategies to decongest their transportation systems. These strategies are often adopted after the preparation of land use plans. The goal of this study was to build a methodology to modify these land uses using soft computing. This can help to achieve alternate land use plans relevant to TOD. The methodology incorporates TOD characteristics and objectives. Global TOD parameters (density, diversity, and distance to transit) were studied. Expert opinions gave weights and ranges for the parameters in an Indian TOD scenario. Rules

Mesoscale structures in signed networks.

Mesoscale structures in signed networks have been studied under the limiting assumption of the validity of social balance theory, which predicts positive connections within groups and negative connections between groups. Here, we propose and apply a methodology that overcomes this limitation and is able to find and characterize also the different possible unbalanced structures in signed networks. Applying our methodology to 24 empirical networks, from social-political, financial, and biological domains, we find that unbalanced mesoscale structures are prevalent in real-world networks, includin

AI Approaches Towards Prechtl's Assessment of General Movements: A Systematic Literature Review.

General movements (GMs) are spontaneous movements of infants up to five months post-term involving the whole body varying in sequence, speed, and amplitude. The assessment of GMs has shown its importance for identifying infants at risk for neuromotor deficits, especially for the detection of cerebral palsy. As the assessment is based on videos of the infant that are rated by trained professionals, the method is time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, approaches based on Artificial Intelligence have gained significantly increased attention in the last years. In this article, we systematically

Mercurophilic interactions: a theoretical study on the importance of ligands.

In this work, a theoretical analysis of intermolecular HgHg contacts in the presence of different ligands is presented. A survey of structural databases to explore the geometrical preferences among experimental structures presenting short Hg(ii)Hg(ii) contacts reveals the main interaction topologies depending on the nature of the ligand. A benchmark study of several dispersion corrected-density functional methods is carried out to determine the optimal computational methodology for the theoretical study of such interaction. This methodology is later used in the study of several dimers of dicoo
