Linguistic processing in high-functioning adults with autism or Asperger's syndrome. Is global coherence impaired?

BACKGROUND: Linguistic processing was explored in normally intelligent adults with either autism or Asperger's syndrome, to test if global coherence was impaired. Global coherence is the ability to establish causal connections and interrelate local chunks into higher-order chunks so that most linguistic elements are linked together thematically. Since individuals with autism are hypothesized to have weak central coherence then one would predict that the clinical groups would have difficulty integrating information globally so as to derive full meaning. METHODS: Two experiments were designed t

Knowledge enrichment and conceptual change in folkbiology: evidence from Williams syndrome.

Ten participants with Williams syndrome (WS) (average verbal mental age of 11;5) were compared to two groups of normally developing children (average mental ages 10;11 and 6;7 years) with respect to intuitive biological knowledge about people, animals, and plants. Participants in the older control group were individually matched to the participants with WS on verbal mental age. The probes for biological understanding were drawn from the existing literature on the development of folkbiology and were divided into two batteries based on the hypothesized distinction of (1) general knowledge consis

Solving belief problems: toward a task analysis.

Solving belief problems develops as a skill in normal children during the preschool years. To understand this process of development, it is necessary to provide an analysis of the tasks used to test preschool 'theory of mind' skills. This analysis should allow us to relate the structure of a given task to the underlying cognitive mechanisms that the task engages. In two experiments, we find that 3-year-old children show a pattern of success and failure on belief tasks that is not consistent with 'conceptual deficit' accounts. Young children possess the concept, BELIEF, but have certain charact

Impairments of number processing induced by prenatal alcohol exposure.

Prenatal alcohol exposure causes a variety of cognitive deficits, notably in mathematics and higher order processes such as abstraction. An exploratory battery was developed to examine specific types of number processing impairments in 29 adolescent and adult patients with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE) relative to controls matched for age, gender, and educational level. The battery included 11 tests: number reading and writing, exact calculation (addition, multiplication, subtraction), approximate calculation (selecting a plausible result for an operation), numbe

The relationship between formal operations cognition and suitability for psychoanalytic treatment.

Psychoanalytic practice can benefit from a coherent theory of cognition that is more comprehensive than, but which includes the related concepts of primary/secondary processes. For reasons not yet understood, cognition has not received the continuing attention it deserves in psychoanalytic theory. As demonstrated, Piaget's empirical studies of cognition can potentially help the practicing psychoanalyst to clinically differentiate those patients suitable for psychoanalytic treatment. It appears that Piaget's theory may hold greater utility for psychoanalysis than has been evidenced to date and

Abstract letter identities and developmental dyslexia.

Four experiments, first used by Bigsby (1988a), were presented to three groups of competent readers of varying reading ages and to nine developmentally dyslexic children. As in the initial study, competent reader data were analysed using group statistical analysis techniques together with some discussion of individual experimental effects and error levels. Competent reader data were also analysed, as were data from the dyslexic subjects, at a cognitive functional level and individual processing descriptions were obtained. Results from the group analysis confirmed earlier findings that nominal

Bone Minimodeling, a Special Modeling Pattern and Potential as Therapeutic Target for Osteoporosis.

The concept of minimodeling is defined as a kind of focal bone formation that features the absence of preceding bone absorption by osteoclasts. In the process of minimodeling, osteogenetic and osteoclastic activities are decoupled. Linear boundary between old bone and new bone can be discovered. Frost et al. presumed that minimodeling in trabeculae can continue throughout life. The concept of minimodeling is not new, however its function and nature are still imperfectly understood. Our review will focus on minimodeling-based formation in 5 aspects below: 1. compare the minimodeling with remode

Understanding of emotional experience in autism: insights from the personal accounts of high-functioning children with autism.

In this study, the authors investigate emotional understanding in autism through a discourse analytic framework to provide a window into children's strategies for interpreting emotional versus nonemotional encounters and consider the implications for the mechanisms underlying emotional understanding in typical development. Accounts were analyzed for thematic content and discourse structure. Whereas high-functioning children with autism were able to discuss contextually appropriate accounts of simple emotions, their strategies for interpreting all types of emotional (but not nonemotional) exper

Substrate-Induced Self-Assembly of Cooperative Catalysts.

Dissipative self-assembly processes in nature rely on chemical fuels that activate proteins for assembly through the formation of a noncovalent complex. The catalytic activity of the assemblies causes fuel degradation, resulting in the formation of an assembly in a high-energy, out-of-equilibrium state. Herein, we apply this concept to a synthetic system and demonstrate that a substrate can induce the formation of vesicular assemblies, which act as cooperative catalysts for cleavage of the same substrate.

Attention enhances category representations across the brain with strengthened residual correlations to ventral temporal cortex.

How does attention enhance neural representations of goal-relevant stimuli while suppressing representations of ignored stimuli across regions of the brain? While prior studies have shown that attention enhances visual responses, we lack a cohesive understanding of how selective attention modulates visual representations across the brain. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while participants performed a selective attention task on superimposed stimuli from multiple categories and used a data-driven approach to test how attention affects both decodability of category inf

From shape to meaning: Evidence for multiple fast feedforward hierarchies of concept processing in the human brain.

A number of fMRI studies have provided support for the existence of multiple concept representations in areas of the brain such as the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) and inferior parietal lobule (IPL). However, the interaction among different conceptual representations remains unclear. To better understand the dynamics of how the brain extracts meaning from sensory stimuli, we conducted a human high-density electroencephalography (EEG) study in which we first trained participants to associate pseudowords with various animal and tool concepts. After training, multivariate pattern classification o

Conceptual controversies regarding the terms Gender and Sex.

I have been following lately the debate that has emerged in the Greek and International literature regarding the terms "sex" and "gender". Traditionally, the term sex refers to the assignment of gender at birth by the obstetrician or the midwife, based on the external genitalia. They declared the sex of the newly born baby as male or female, without any other graduation. Therefore, the term sex is a nonflexible categorical concept. It is quite difficult to comprehend the sense of "a little bit male" or "a little bit female", as it is not possible to comprehend the sense of "a little bit pregna

Multidimensional assessment of spirituality/religion in patients with HIV: conceptual framework and empirical refinement.

A decade ago, an expert panel developed a framework for measuring spirituality/religion in health research (Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality), but empirical testing of this framework has been limited. The purpose of this study was to determine whether responses to items across multiple measures assessing spirituality/religion by 450 patients with HIV replicate this model. We hypothesized a six-factor model underlying a collective of 56 items, but results of confirmatory factor analyses suggested eight dimensions: Meaning/Peace, Tangible Connection to the Divine, Pos

Free classification as a window on executive functioning in autism spectrum disorders.

Spontaneous classification was assessed using a free serial search task in 18 school-aged children at the high functioning end of the autistic spectrum and compared with results from age-matched typically developing controls. The task required participants to touch shapes in an exhaustive non-repetitive sequence. The positions of the items varied randomly between touches. The objective was to measure the extent to which children with autism and Asperger's syndrome could spontaneously utilise category information such as shape and color to organise their search. There were no group differences

The potential of dyslexic individuals in communication design education.

If dyslexic individuals have the ability to express themselves in different ways, particularly in the field of modern graphic design, would they be a favoured group in creating the extraordinary and outstanding ideas that are required in communication design? The study group consisted of 20 primary school dyslexics between ages of 7-12 and 20 non-dyslexics serving as a control group. A jury with four specialists evaluated the drawings gathered from the 40 participants. Even though we might not say surely that the dyslexics are the best possible candidates for communication design education, ba

The effects of repeating a recognition test in lorazepam-induced amnesia: evidence for impaired contextual memory as a cause of amnesia.

In two experiments, a recognition test for an earlier presented list was given twice in immediate succession (Test 1 and Test 2). On the hypothesis that anterograde amnesia for episodic memory involves a deficit in contextual memory, amnesic subjects should confuse familiarity with distractor items gained during Test 1 with familiarity gained during original list presentation. As a result, they should think that they recognize more items on Test 2. This will lower recognition efficiency in Test 2 by increasing false alarms rather than by reducing hits. For subjects with an amnesia induced by l

[The "Adaptive Intelligence Diagnostic Test" in clinical practice: 3 case examples].

After the main advantages of the new German intelligence test-battery "Adaptive Intelligence Diagnosticum" (AID) are stated, this paper gives several case-studies in order to illustrate AID's support to clinical psychology. The case-studies are all quoted from a Child-Guidance-like institution. They allow inferences which might not be likely to be gained by some other tests. Besides, they serve for pursuing practical handling, computation, and interpretation of the AID.

The use of structured scenarios in genetic counselling.

Nineteen women at risk of bearing a child with either Duchenne muscular dystrophy or a neural tube defect participated in a structured scenario study. Eight scenarios were created to allow the women to "try out" possible reproductive outcomes. Our findings suggest that the use of scenarios may be helpful in reproductive counselling, particularly for those women who have difficulty discussing emotional issues.

From cognitive abstraction to adaptive behavior: neural bases of concept learning in autistic adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Learned knowledge does not consistently generalize to new contexts in autistic individuals, limiting potential for adapting to real-world demands. This challenge is hypothesized to stem from difficulties with forming abstract representations, potentially arising from perceptual processing that favors local details over the gestalt. We tested the prediction that generalization would be primarily based on exemplar-specific representations in autistic youth using computational modelling coupled with neuroimaging. METHODS: Sixty-four autistic adolescents without intellectual disabilit
