Coral reef ecosystems are the most productive and biodiverse marine ecosystems, with their productivity levels highly dependent on the symbiotic dinoflagellates belonging to the family Symbiodiniaceae. As a unique life history strategy, resting cyst production is of great significance in the ecology of many dinoflagellate species, those HABs-causing species in particular, however, there has been no confirmative evidence for the resting cyst production in any species of the family Symbiodiniaceae. Based on morphological and life history observations of cultures in the laboratory and morpho-mole

White Plague Type II (WPL II) is a disease increasingly affecting scleractinian coral species and progresses rapidly. However, the etiological pathogen and remedy remain elusive. In this study, transmission experiments demonstrated that Aureimonas altamirensis and Aurantimonas coralicida, representing the WPL II pathogens, could infect Pocillopora damicorni. The infection produced selected pathological symptoms, including bleaching, tissue loss, and decolorization. Furthermore, ammonia degradation significantly reduced the severity of infection by these pathogens, indicating that ammonia may b

Little is known about early coral settlement on shipwrecks with regard to their species and size compositions. Hurricanes in the Caribbean have a long history of sinking ships but a link with new coral settlement is understudied. In 2017, Hurricane Irma caused the sinking of over 300 vessels in the coastal waters of Saint Martin, eastern Caribbean. In 2021, coral settlement was studied on one of them, which included two native, one non-native, and two cryptogenic species. The corals were smaller than 8 cm in diameter. The invasive Tubastraea coccinea was the most abundant scleractinian and was

Massive coral bleaching episodes induced by thermal stress are one of the first causes of coral death worldwide. Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been identified as one of the potential causes of symbiosis breakdown between polyps and algae in corals during extreme heat wave events. Here, we propose a new strategy for mitigating heat effects by delivering underwater an antioxidant to the corals. We fabricated zein/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-based biocomposite films laden with the strong and natural antioxidant curcumin as an advanced coral bleaching remediation tool. Biocomp

Sessile invertebrates often engage in synchronized spawning events to increase likelihood of fertilization. Although coral reefs are well studied, the reproductive behavior of most species and the relative influence of various environmental cues that drive reproduction are not well understood. We conducted a comparative examination of the reproduction of the well-studied Hawaiian coral Montipora capitata and the relatively unknown reproduction of its congener, Montipora flabellata. Both are simultaneous hermaphroditic broadcast spawners that release egg-sperm bundles with external fertilizatio

Stony corals are promising transplant candidates for the ecological engineering of artificial coastal defences such as seawalls as they attract and host numerous other organisms. However, seawalls are exposed to a wide range of environmental stressors associated with periods of emersion during low tide such as desiccation and changes in salinity, temperature, and solar irradiance. All of these variables have known deleterious effects on coral physiology, growth, and fitness. In this study, we performed parallel experiments (in situ and ex situ) to examine among-genotype responses of Pocillopor

Infectious diseases are one of the major drivers of coral reef decline worldwide. White plague-like disease (WPL) is a widespread disease with a complex etiology that infects several coral species, including the Brazilian endemic species Mussismilia braziliensis. Gene expression profiles of healthy and WPL-affected M. braziliensis were analyzed in winter and summer seasons. The de novo assembly of the M. braziliensis transcriptome from healthy and white plague samples produced a reference transcriptome containing 119,088 transcripts. WPL-diseased samples were characterized by repression of imm

Light distribution on coral reefs is very heterogeneous at the microhabitat level and is an important determinant of coral thermal microenvironments. This study implemented a solar load model that uses a backward ray-tracing method to estimate macroscale and microscale variations of solar irradiance penetrating the ocean surface and impacting the surfaces of coral colonies. We then explored whether morphological characteristics such as tissue darkness (or pigmentation) and thickness may influence the amount of light captured and its spectral distribution by two contrasting coral colony morphol

Anomalously high water temperatures, associated with climate change, are increasing the global prevalence of coral bleaching, coral diseases, and coral-mortality events. Coral bleaching and disease outbreaks are often inter-related phenomena, since many coral diseases are a consequence of opportunistic pathogens that further compromise thermally stressed colonies. Yet, most coral diseases have low prevalence (<5%), and are not considered contagious. By contrast, we document the impact of an extremely high-prevalence outbreak (61%) of white-plague disease at 14 sites off southeastern Florida. W

Ocean warming events increasingly co-occur with coastal agrochemical pollution, yet their joint effects on coral holobiont molecular responses remain poorly resolved. We exposed the reef-building coral Galaxea fascicularis to near-threshold warming (30 °C), prometryn (1 μg L-1), and their combination for 4 days, and quantified coral host and Symbiodiniaceae protein abundance using TMT-based proteomics to capture early-stage molecular responses. Heat was the primary driver of proteome shifts, consistent with suppressed biosynthesis and reallocation toward maintenance, whereas prometryn imposed

IN BRIEF: This study reveals the reproductive patterns of Mussismilia harttii, associating gametogenesis and spawning with temperature changes. Its findings aid coral conservation and assess climate change impacts on reef ecosystems.
ABSTRACT: Decline of coral reefs worldwide emphasizes the need for biological information to support species conservation and management strategies. Herein, we thoroughly explored the gametogenesis of the endemic and endangered Brazilian coral Mussismilia harttii. A distinct distribution of male (proximal) and female (distal) regions in the same mesentery confirm

Animals must continually balance foraging with the risk of predation. In complex natural environments, this means quickly distinguishing between threats and harmless situations. We investigated how site-associated coral reef fishes escape in response to visual cues mimicking predator attacks, using controlled underwater presentations of looming stimuli at varying speeds. We measured escape responses across species and social contexts, and compared them to predator attack speeds observed in the same habitat. Escape probability increased sharply with the speed of the looming stimulus, with no re

The ichthyofauna of the Fiordland ecosystems of southern Aotearoa New Zealand was documented during four remotely operating vehicle (ROV) dives between 100 and 350 m depth. A total of 26 fish species were documented within two fiord basins. An association between cold-water corals, such as the stony coral Madrepora oculata and black coral Antipathella fiordensis, and several fish species was observed. In particular, the observed association between M. oculata and the wavyline perch (Lepidoperca tasmanica) highlighted the use of M. oculata colonies not only as sheltering habitats but also as nu

While recent technical breakthroughs have enabled advances in the description of reefs down to 150 m, the structure and depth zonation of deep-reef communities below 150 m remains largely unknown. Here, we present results from over 10 years of deep-reef fish surveys using human-occupied submersibles at four locations across the Caribbean Sea, constituting one of the only continuous reef-fish surveys from 10 to 480 m (1 site) and 40 to 300 m (3 sites). We identify four vertically stratified deep-reef fish communities between 40 and 300 m bordered by an altiphotic (0-10 m) and a deep-sea (300-48

Response of orange-finned anemonefish Amphiprion chrysopterus and three-spot damselfish Dascyllus trimaculatus to red laser-pointer light was studied in Mo'orea, French Polynesia. Four magnificent anemones Heteractis magnifica and their resident fish were observed for typical behaviours (biting, chasing, hiding, posing, lunging and retreating) with and without exposure to laser-pointer light. Lunging behaviour increased significantly for both fish species upon exposure to laser-pointer light; none of the other behaviours changed significantly. We advance the hypothesis that orange-finned anemo

High-energy wavelengths in the ultraviolet-B (UVB, 280-315 nm) and the UVA (315-400-nm) portion of the spectrum are harmful to terrestrial and aquatic organisms. Interestingly, UVA is also involved in the repair of UV induced damage. Organisms living in shallow coral reef environments possess UV absorbing compounds, such as mycosporine-like amino acids, to protect them from UV radiation. While it has been demonstrated that exposure to UV (280-400 nm) affects the UV absorbance of fish mucus, whether the effects of UV exposure vary between UVB and UVA wavelengths is not known. Therefore, we inve

Coral reef ecosystems face escalating threats from anthropogenic global climate challenges, leading to frequent bleaching events. A key issue in coral transplantation is the inability of fragments to rapidly grow to sizes that can resist environmental pressures. The observation of accelerated growth during the early stages of coral regeneration provides new insights for addressing this challenge. To investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms, we study the fast-growing stony coral Acropora muricata. Using single-cell RNA sequencing, bulk RNA sequencing, and high-resolution micro-computed t

Pocillopora is a widespread, dominant reef-building coral genus in the Indo-Pacific; many species within this group exhibit high morphological similarity and plasticity. Given this, genetic tools are needed to robustly identify Pocillopora individuals to the species level. Quick and accurate identification approaches for Pocillopora species are critical to estimating biodiversity patterns under current and future environmental challenges. In recent years, the mitochondrial open reading frame (mtORF) and a histone region (PocHistone) have been validated using genome-wide data to become the most

The Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary, marked by the Chicxulub impact ejecta layer has a global distribution, with distal, intermediate and proximal boundary sections of distinct mineralogy, geochemistry and stratigraphy. Distal sections show a thin double-layer of spherulites and clay, enriched in platinum group elements and impact minerals. Proximal boundary sections around the Gulf of Mexico-Caribbean Sea are thicker, with clastic tsunami and debris flow deposits and the fireball layer in between the spherulitic and clay layers. Impact-induced disturbance and stratigraphic gaps have limited the

Upright branching sponges, such as Aplysina cauliformis, provide critical three-dimensional habitat for other organisms and assist in stabilizing coral reef substrata, but are highly susceptible to breakage during storms. Breakage can increase sponge fragmentation, contributing to population clonality and inbreeding. Conversely, storms could provide opportunities for new genotypes to enter populations via larval recruitment, resulting in greater genetic diversity in locations with frequent storms. The unprecedented occurrence of two Category 5 hurricanes in close succession during 2017 in the
