The ACE study (Felitti et al., 1998) led to the recognition of the prevalence and impact of trauma. However, since the ACE study sample was mostly white and middle class, the Philadelphia task force implemented their own study to account for trauma of a more diverse sample. The treatment of torture survivors from diverse cultures has been a difficult task involving issues of loss, massive trauma, cultural style, and adjusting to a new country. Research on treatment outcomes has shown inconsistent results. OBJECTIVE: Previous studies demonstrated that a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program delivered in group sessions is effective in alleviating treatment-induced menopausal symptoms in women with breast cancer, but also that in-person CBT is inconvenient for some women and can result in low levels of program compliance. A promising, alternative approach is to use the Internet to make this form of CBT more accessible and feasible for patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and to generate preliminary data on the efficacy of a guided, Internet-based CBT program.

BACKGROUND: Chronically homeless individuals have high rates of hospitalization and death, and they may benefit from the completion of advance directives.
AIM: To determine the rate of advance directive completion using a counselor-guided intervention, identify characteristics associated with advance directive completion, and describe end-of-life care preferences in a group of chronically homeless individuals.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal degeneration (FTD) spectrum disorders have a strong genetic component. Genetic counselors are a limited resource, and therefore, other providers must be prepared to integrate genetic testing into their practice.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent ALS/FTD studies have demonstrated that lack of family history does not preclude a genetic etiology. The benefits of a genetic diagnosis have expanded to include the potential to treat; thus, genetic testing is increasingly recommended to be offered to all persons with ALS/FTD.
