Obesity and dental caries in Saudi Arabia: a correlated study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and dental caries are two major global public health concerns. There have been conflicting reports about the relationship between obesity and dental caries. This study intends to examine the link between obesity and dental caries across the five regions of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: The study involved 380 participants, which was a cross-sectional survey, with an age range of 6 to 14. We distributed a self-reported questionnaire to assess the participants body mass index (BMI) and caries (dmft/DMFT). In this study, descriptive analysis, student t-test, one-way analysis of varia

[Oral manifestations in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus].

Forty-six patients with systemic lupus erythematosus underwent thorough dental examination to determine the frequency and severity of oral lesions and periodontal diseases. According to clinical criteria, disease was classified as severe (n = 26) or less severe (n = 20). The overall rate of mucosal involvement in the studied patients was 48%-from 54% in patients with severe disease, 40% in those with less severe disease. Patients with severe disease were found to have a higher rate of tooth loss and an increased rate of gingival inflammation. The severity of periodontal lesions correlated with

[The status of the teeth and periodontal tissues of children living in an area polluted by the wastes from an aluminum plant].

The author compares dental, periodontal, and bone system status of children living in two regions characterized by different degrees and patterns of environmental pollution. Children living in regions polluted by aluminum plant waste (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, dust, hydrogen fluoride) developed specific abnormalities because of body poisoning with fluorides, namely, dental fluorosis, osteoporosis and osteosclerosis of the bones; periodontal diseases in these children were more incident than in controls. These findings prompted the development of a complex of sanitary,

[The periodontal findings and microflora in insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetics].

In 42 insulin-dependent type-I diabetics (age: 25.1 +/- 6 years; history of diabetes: 6.7 +/- 6.6 years) and in 118 control patients (age: 26.1 +/- 5.7 years) the oral health status including a periodontal examination was assessed. In addition, diabetic patients served to study the microflora in gingival pockets and on the mucosa of the cheek. The dental examination comprised the assessment of oral hygiene (Approximal Plaque Index, API), gingival inflammation (Sulcus Bleeding Index, SBI, and Gingival Index, GI) and of loss of attachment. Special medical history forms were used to gather inform

Dental caries changes in the Scottish Isle of Lewis.

The Scottish Isle of Lewis has an island community which traditionally is a stable population that has little migration of its school children. The island has low levels of fluoride (less than 0.1 ppm) in the drinking water supplies, but the island inhabitants have the availability of all UK commodities. The island has well detailed dental data going back to 1937. The present study (1987) examined dental caries and oral hygiene status in the school community between 1984 and 87 and compares the findings to the previous examinations completed by the same survey team. The caries levels declined

The amount of care delivered: challenges of indices in oral health studies.

OBJECTIVES: Untreated dental caries is the most prevalent medical condition worldwide, with considerable variations in prevalence between regions and countries. The care index (CI) and the restorative index (RI) are generally used to make comparisons between and within countries of levels of care delivered. However, several methodological challenges can be identified that limit the interpretation and comparison of these indices. The objective of this manuscript was to evaluate these challenges and to provide solutions. METHODS: Five challenges were identified: (i) the comparability of CI and

Investigating the influence of solvent molecular structure on the separation of α-olefins in Fischer-Tropsch naphtha.

The rapid expansion of high-end polyolefin and photovoltaic industries has pushed the annual demand for C6C8 α-olefins to million tons. Fischer-Tropsch naphtha contains over 50 % α-olefins, yet their boiling points differ very little from those of the corresponding alkanes, rendering conventional distillation unfeasible. Extractive distillation is regarded as a viable industrial separation approach. Using the n-hexane/1-hexene, we combine quantum-chemical calculations with vapor-liquid equilibrium experiments to systematically evaluate four solvents-2-pyrrolidone (2-P), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMS

The Impact of Dental Pain on the Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) of Preschool Children in Austria.

Dental pain in children is a global public health burden with psychosocial and economic implications, challenging families and pediatric dentists in daily clinical practice. Previous studies have addressed the exclusive impact of either caries, dental trauma, malocclusion, or socioeconomic status on OHRQoL. Even though such examples can surely cause dental pain in children, so far only little research on the correlation of dental pain as a general symptom of different underlying causes and OHRQoL has been published. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of dental pain on the oral he
