An Evaluation of Trainee-Executed Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Blocks in the Emergency Department.

Background/Objectives: Peripheral nerve blocks offer the option of targeted pain relief localized to the injured areas while minimizing potential systemic side effects of opioids such as hypotension and respiratory depression. However, there is often hesitancy in the acute setting to perform these procedures. The objective of this study was to describe the technical performance and recorded complications of archived ultrasound-guided and ultrasound-assisted peripheral nerve blocks performed by Emergency Medicine trainees in the emergency department (ED). Methods: A retrospective review of pati

Comparison of narrow-band imaging with autofluorescence imaging for endoscopic detection of squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil.

PURPOSE: Early detection of mucosal neoplastic lesions is crucial for a patient's prognosis. This has led to the development of effective optical endoscopic diagnostic methods such as narrow band imaging (NBI) and autofluorescence (AFI). Independent of each other, both of these methods were proven useful in the detection of mucosal neoplasias. There are limited reported data comparing both methods for oropharyngeal cancer diagnostics. The aim of the study was to compare NBI and AFI endoscopic visualization of signs in identifying tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and assessing its extent

Chronic methadone use, poor bowel visualization and failed colonoscopy: a preliminary study.

AIM: To examine effects of chronic methadone usage on bowel visualization, preparation, and repeat colonoscopy. METHODS: In-patient colonoscopy reports from October, 2004 to May, 2009 for methadone dependent (MD) patients were retrospectively evaluated and compared to matched opioid naive controls (C). Strict criteria were applied to exclude patients with risk factors known to cause constipation or gastric dysmotility. Colonoscopy reports of all eligible patients were analyzed for degree of bowel visualization, assessment of bowel preparation (good, fair, or poor), and whether a repeat colono

Monitoring Over-The-Counter Drug Misuse in Japanese User-Generated Data.

INTRODUCTION: The misuse of over-the-counter (OTC) drugs poses a significant global public health challenge. This study proposes a system for detecting and visualizing inappropriate OTC drug use in social media data. METHODS: We constructed a corpus of 20,036 labeled Japanese tweets, including 7,000 medication-related posts, to address the linguistic and cultural nuances. By fine-tuning the Japanese bidirectional encoder representations from transformers models, the system identified misuse patterns such as overuse. The system also incorporates a visualization tool to illustrate temporal and

Lead-OR: A multimodal platform for deep brain stimulation surgery.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrode implant trajectories are stereotactically defined using preoperative neuroimaging. To validate the correct trajectory, microelectrode recordings (MERs) or local field potential recordings can be used to extend neuroanatomical information (defined by MRI) with neurophysiological activity patterns recorded from micro- and macroelectrodes probing the surgical target site. Currently, these two sources of information (imaging vs. electrophysiology) are analyzed separately, while means to fuse both data streams have not been introduced. METHODS: He

Three-dimensional MR visualization of the intracisternal course of the cranial nerves V-VIII by virtual cisternoscopy.

PURPOSE: A post-processing protocol for 3D visualization of the cranial nerves V-VIII along their intracisternal course is presented. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six healthy volunteers underwent MR imaging (1.5 T) to obtain high-resolution heavily T2-weighted data sets (3DFT CISS) with isotropic voxels (0.5 mm3). The data sets were post-processed by using volume rendering software in order to visualize the intracisternal courses of the cranial nerves V-VIII as well as their root entry zones. The data acquisition and post-processing protocol was then applied in 14 patients with a suspected neural co

Improvement of the Visualization of the Adamkiewicz Artery Using a Virtual Non-Electrocardiogram-Gated Reconstruction in Electrocardiogram-Gated Computed Tomography Angiography for Aortic Diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Retrospective electrocardiogram (ECG)-gated CT angiography of the whole aorta is one of the most reasonable acquisition methods for simultaneously evaluating the aorta, coronary arteries, and the Adamkiewicz artery in the preoperative evaluation of aortic diseases. However, in retrospective ECG-gated reconstruction (ECG recon) of the Adamkiewicz artery, only a portion of the acquired data per heartbeat is used for image reconstruction. Therefore, we propose a virtual non-ECG-gated reconstruction (VNECG recon) for the Adamkiewicz artery by editing the ECG, which utilizes all acquired

A Simple Tool to Improve Visualization of the Vocal Cords on Translaryngeal Ultrasound in Male Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal ultrasound has been increasingly used for the evaluation of the vocal cords mobility after thyroid and parathyroid surgery. The sensitivity and positive predictive value of the method are reported to be higher than 80%. Nevertheless, the visualization rate in male patients remains low; therefore, ultrasound is not attractive for the perioperative workup in those patients. In the present study, we evaluate the ability to improve the visualization rate for male patients by using a gel pad as an interface between the skin and the ultrasound probe. FlowCytoMonitoR: An R-Shiny Program for Advanced Monitoring Flow Cytometer Performance.

Flow cytometers are highly sensitive scientific instruments that need to be in optimal condition to provide accurate and reliable data. To ensure consistent performance, cytometer performance is regularly assessed by measuring standardized reference particles during a quality control (QC) measurement. Cytometer manufacturers have developed dedicated modules in their operating software to monitor cytometer performance and award a pass or a fail for each QC to indicate if the instrument is performing to specifications. However, these are usually limited in their ease of use and data visualizatio

FaceReview: supporting interactive exploration of linked heterogeneous datasets for unilateral cleft lip and palate.

Children with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) suffer from negative public perceptions. A better treatment strategy should be established to help them live an ordinary life with improved perceptions. To do that, it is important to understand the relationship between physical facial features and perceptual judgment. In this paper, we present FaceReview, a new visualization system to support interactive exploration of a heterogeneous multidimensional dataset with facial measurement data and subjective judgment data. To seamlessly link the two data, we design FaceReview based on information

[Mapping of environmental mycologic hazards using GIS method].

Intensive poultry production is associated with extreme densities of birds crammed into industrial-scale hen houses. Consequently, the bird keepers are exposed to elevated concentrations of dust. Exposure to dust, containing pathogenic mycological agents, may cause exacerbate asthma, allergic alveolitis, as well as organic dust toxic syndrome. Geographic Information System (GIS) allows to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize biological data, among them mycological threats. The aim of the presently reported study was to create the mycological database from the chicken farms and

3D reconstruction of cochlea using optical coherence tomography.

Recently, in vivo visualization of the cochlea and the smaller structures inside of it has been achieved by optical coherence tomography (OCT). This makes it possible to use OCT imaging for diagnosis of diseases such as Meniere's disease through measuring the degree of endolymphatic hydrops. To this end, we present a novel method for 3D segmentation of these cochlear OCT images that is based on superpixels and diffusion maps. The method takes as input grayscale volumetric OCT images and outputs a binary image with the segmented cochlea. We show that the proposed method is suitable for segmenti

Analytical and statistical survey of early stages of open-angle glaucoma with low luminance visual field.

The purpose of this study was to show the early visual field signs in glaucoma using the 'Moniteur Ophtalmologique' at a background mesopic luminance of 0.3 apostilbs. Forty-five patients were selected, and 68 eyes with suspected early glaucoma were examined. Among the defects which were studied, we noticed a predominance of what we called pericaecal scotoma (PCS) and levelling. These two first signs appear as an alarm signal. To detect the early visual field signs of open-angle glaucoma developing, this study recommends the use of a background mesopic luminance of 0.3 apostilbs and observatio

The relationship of mean defect to corrected loss variance in glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

Statistical analysis of visual-field data is permitted by the quantitative techniques used in automated perimetry. The visual-field indices mean defect (MD) and corrected loss variance (CLV) provide an opportunity to analyze and follow visual fields mathematically. We investigated the relationship of MD to CLV in 32 glaucoma suspects and 17 patients with visual-field defects due to chronic open-angle glaucoma. In glaucoma patients with early and moderate disease (up to a MD of 18 dB), the CLV statistically covaried with the MD (R2 = 0.85). Beyond an MD of 18 dB, increases in the MD seemed to c

Polarized hyperspectral and polarized light microscopic imaging for enhanced visualization of white blood cells.

SIGNIFICANCE: White blood cells (WBC) are hematopoietic cells of the immune system that protect the body by recognizing and eliminating infectious agents. Abnormalities in WBC production, maturation, or function can lead to disease and associated morphologic changes that, when systematically characterized, support diagnostic classification and clinical decision-making. AIM: We aim to investigate polarized hyperspectral imaging (PHSI) and polarized light imaging (PLI) microscopy for the visualization of WBCs. APPROACH: We developed a dual-modality microscopic imaging system that performs both

Near-infrared fluorescence imaging improves biliary visualization and perioperative outcomes in difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy: implications for future clinical studies.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Unclear biliary anatomy is a major contributor to surgical difficulty in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). Near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging with indocyanine green (ICG) enables real-time visualization of biliary structures; however, its clinical value in difficult LC remains to be fully established. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of NIRF imaging on biliary visualization and surgical outcomes in difficult LC. METHODS: A total of 274 patients undergoing difficult LC were retrospectively analyzed (112 ICG, 162 white light [WL]). Perioperative outcomes and

Cinematic rendering of pancreatic neoplasms: preliminary observations and opportunities.

Pancreatic cancer is the third most common cause of cancer death and CT is the most commonly used modality for the initial evaluation of suspected pancreatic cancer. Post-processing of CT data into 2D multiplanar and 3D reconstructions has been shown to improve tumor visualization and assessment of tumor resectability compared to axial slices, and is considered the standard of care. Cinematic rendering is a new 3D-rendering technique that produces photorealistic images, and it has the potential to more accurately depict anatomic detail compared to traditional 3D reconstruction techniques.
