The presence of erythritol in the fetal fluids of fallow deer (Dama dama).

Gas liquid chromatography has been used to compare the levels of erythritol in fetal fluids from fallow deer with those in fetal fluids from cows and small laboratory animals. The relationship between the relatively high levels of erythritol found in allantoic and amniotic fluid from fallow deer and the possible susceptibility of this species to brucellosis is discussed. An interesting accessory finding was the high concentration of calcium phosphate in the allantoic fluid from these deer.

Leptospiral antibodies in white-tailed deer of the southeastern United States.

Serum samples from 1,544 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) collected in nine southeastern states were examined for leptospiral antibodies. Significant titers of 1:100 or greater were found in 292 deer. The highest prevalence of leptospiral antibodies was in Virginia, where 108 of 351 deer had significant titers. The most frequently encountered serotypes of Leptospira interrogans were: grippotyphosa (210 positive), pomona (81), and canicola (26). Other serotypes disclosed were australis (15), icterohaemorrhagiae (10), pyrogenes (6), tarassovi (hyos) (5), georgia (4), ballum (4), sejroe

Prevalence of the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, in deer ticks (Ixodes dammini) collected from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Saint Croix State Park, Minnesota.

During a special two-day hunt (11, 12 November 1989) in Saint Croix State Park, Minnesota (USA), one side of the neck for each of 146 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) was examined for ticks. Of the 5,442 ticks collected, 90% (4,893) were the winter tick, Dermacentor albipictus, and 10% (549) were the deer tick, Ixodes dammini, the primary vector of the causative agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi. Adult males had the greatest frequency of infestation of either D. albipictus (100%) or I. dammini (88%) and had on average more ticks, compared to other deer. Based on an examinat

Roe Deer Reproduction in Western Poland: The Late Autumn Rut Phenomenon.

Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) populations in Poland are characterized by low productivity, which is why their reproductive potential was investigated. The presence of corpora lutea (CL) on the ovaries of females hunted in autumn and winter in the years 2015 and 2016 was assessed. Most animals were post-rut and most often had multiple ovulations. However, in early autumn 2015, 60% of the females had no CL. Therefore, they did not participate in mating at the turn of July/August. Those that did ovulate were found to have one CL. In late autumn, 97% of the females were post-rut, mostly with t

Genetic diversity of Theileria spp. in deer (Artiodactyla: Cervidae) from Brazil.

Babesia spp. and Theileria spp. are tick-borne apicomplexan protozoa that can cause disease in animals and humans. Deer are considered reservoirs for a wide variety of Piroplasmida species, including some potentially zoonotic. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and genetic diversity of piroplasmids in wild deer sampled in four Brazilian states (São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná and Goiás). For this purpose, extracted DNA samples from 181 deer buffy coat samples (138 Blastocerus dichotomus, 26 Subulo gouazoubira, 4 Mazama jucunda, 3 Mazama rufa and 10 Ozotocerus bezoarticus) wer

Phenotype of White Sika Deer Due to SCF Gene Structural Variation.

Breeding ornamental white sika deer is a new notion that can be used to broaden the sika deer industry However, it is very rare for other coat phenotypes to occur, especially white (apart from albinism), due to the genetic stability and homogeneity of its coat color phenotype, making it difficult to breed white sika deer between species. We found a white sika deer and sequenced its whole genome. Then, the clean data obtained were analyzed on the basis of gene frequency, and a cluster of coat color candidate genes containing 92 coat color genes, one SV (structure variation), and five nonsynonym

Agricultural land use shapes dispersal in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

BACKGROUND: Dispersal is a fundamental process to animal population dynamics and gene flow. In white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus), dispersal also presents an increasingly relevant risk for the spread of infectious diseases. Across their wide range, WTD dispersal is believed to be driven by a suite of landscape and host behavioral factors, but these can vary by region, season, and sex. Our objectives were to (1) identify dispersal events in Wisconsin WTD and determine drivers of dispersal rates and distances, and (2) determine how landscape features (e.g., rivers, roads) structure

ITRAQ-based quantitative proteomics analysis of forest musk deer with pneumonia.

Pneumonia can seriously threaten the life of forest musk deer (FMD, an endangered species). To gain a comprehensive understanding of pneumonia pathogenesis in FMD, iTRAQ-based proteomics analysis was performed in diseased (Pne group) lung tissues of FMD that died of pneumonia and normal lung tissues (Ctrl group) of FMD that died from fighting against each other. Results showed that 355 proteins were differentially expressed (fold change ≥ 1.2 and adjusted P-value < 0.05) in Pne vs. Ctrl. GO/KEGG annotation and enrichment analyses showed that dysregulated proteins might play vital roles in bact

Clinical Tick-Borne Encephalitis in a Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus L.).

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is the causative agent of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), a severe zoonosis occurring in the Palearctic region mainly transmitted through Ixodes ticks. In Italy, TBEV is restricted to the north-eastern part of the country. This report describes for the first time a case of clinical TBE in a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.). The case occurred in the Belluno province, Veneto region, an area endemic for TBEV. The affected roe deer showed ataxia, staggering movements, muscle tremors, wide-base stance of the front limbs, repetitive movements of the head, persist

Detection of Leptospira interrogans in Wild Sambar Deer (Rusa unicolor), Brazil.

Leptospirosis is an emerging zoonotic disease caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. Wild animals may present acute disease or become chronic hosts. The present study aimed to identify Leptospira spp. infection and determine circulating serogroups in free-ranging sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) in a fragment of peri-urban tropical forest in northeastern Brazil. Blood samples were collected and subjected to microscopic agglutination testing (MAT) and PCR analysis (genes lipL32 and secY). Anti-Leptospira antibodies were detected in 60% of the animals tested, with serogroups Cynopteri (33.4%), H

Variation in movement patterns of mule deer: have we oversimplified migration?

BACKGROUND: Conservation and management of migratory animals has gained attention in recent years, but the majority of research has focused on stereotypical 'migrant' and 'resident' behaviors, often failing to incorporate any atypical behaviors or characterize migratory behaviors beyond distance and timing of the migration. With migration threatened by anthropogenic development and climate change, it is crucial that we understand the full range of migratory behaviors. Our objective was to demonstrate and characterize the variation in migration strategies, including typical and atypical migrato

Suburban white-tailed deer seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii from Chicago, Illinois.

The presence and abundance of vertebrates influences the circulation of zoonotic diseases. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are widely distributed in North America and deer densities are frequently high in unhunted areas, including most major metropolitan regions. This study investigated the seroprevalence for Toxoplasma gondii from live-captured and culled deer sampled in two suburban forest preserves around Chicago, Illinois, from 1995 to 1999. Seroprevalence for T. gondii was 55.9% (n = 443) and was significantly higher at the northern study site, Des Plaines. Seroprevalence for T

Rapid Simulation of Unprocessed DEER Decay Data for Protein Fold Prediction.

Despite advances in sampling and scoring strategies, Monte Carlo modeling methods still struggle to accurately predict de novo the structures of large proteins, membrane proteins, or proteins of complex topologies. Previous approaches have addressed these shortcomings by leveraging sparse distance data gathered using site-directed spin labeling and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to improve protein structure prediction and refinement outcomes. However, existing computational implementations entail compromises between coarse-grained models of the spin label that lower the resolutio

Molecular characterization of Moniezia sichuanensis in captive musk deer (Moschus berezovskii).

The musk deer (Moschus berezovskii) is an economically important species from which musk is extracted and used in perfumes and medicines. Cestodes (parasitic flatworms) of the genus Moniezia are important parasites that infect this endangered species and can cause high mortality in young deer. In 1982, Moniezia (S.) sichuanensis sp. nov. was described from a specimen obtained from wild musk deer. The new species was distinct from the other described species of Moniezia by the sawtooth-shaped interproglottidal glands, the thick vagina and the absence of a cirrus spine. In the present study, 12

Pathogens in water deer (Hydropotes inermis) in South Korea, 2010-12.

Water deer (Hydropotes inermis) are among the most common wildlife to approach farmhouses and livestock barns in Korea. We collected 305 water deer from Gangwon (n=168), South Chungcheong (n=89), and Gyeongsang (n=48) provinces in 2010-12 and used PCR and serologic tests to screen the deer for pathogens. In 2010, tests for bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), rotavirus, and Brucella abortus were positive in 8% (5/60), 2% (1/60), and 59% (33/56) of the animals, respectively. In 2010, the water deer were negative for foot-and-mouth disease virus, coronaviruses, and Mycobacterium bovis. All sample

Serosurveillance for livestock pathogens in free-ranging mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus).

Routine disease surveillance has been conducted for decades in mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in California for pathogens shared between wildlife and domestic ruminants that may have implications for the animal production industry and wildlife health. Deer sampled from 1990 to 2007 (n = 2,619) were tested for exposure to six pathogens: bluetongue virus (BTV), epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), Leptospira spp., Anaplasma spp. and Brucella spp. We evaluated the relationship between exposure to these pathogens and demographic risk factors to identify

Sperm parameters on Iberian red deer: electroejaculation and post-mortem collection.

Artificial reproductive technologies (ART) for cervids have improved, but a need remains for the collection of basic data. We studied two models of sperm collection in Iberian red deer, post-mortem (PM) in a wild population (179 samples) and by electroejaculation (EE) in a farmed population (37 samples), recording: testicular and epididymal weight, testicular diameter, sperm quantity, pH and osmolality and spermatozoa quality (motility by CASA, abnormal forms, cytoplasmic droplets, viability and acrosomal status). We tested the relationship of these parameters with stag age and compared the tw
