The Default Mode Network and Behavior: a Model to Analyse Psycho-Physiological Interactions in Resting State fMRI.

The Default Mode Network was a key finding for cognitive neuroscience, but being the result of a data-driven analysis of resting-state fMRI data, its psychological and clinical implications have been difficult to elucidate. This is because in the resting-state paradigm we cannot directly correlate an observable specific task with specific brain connectivity patterns, and therefore inferences about the relationship between particular cognitive domains and the resting-state networks are limited. A similar problem arises when trying to link the network with personality traits: the DMN, as other i

Situation model manipulations differently engage semantic and default mode networks during narrative comprehension.

Narrative comprehension involves creating a mental representation of the events of the story: a "situation model". Maintaining a situation model is thought to be supported by the Default Mode Network (DMN), but recent work suggests that the semantic system, and specifically the ventrolateral anterior temporal lobe (ATL), may play a role in reflecting on and restructuring the situation model via internally-driven or endogenous semantic processing. The present study used fMRI to investigate how ATL and DMN brain regions respond under varying exogenous, or input-driven, and endogenous processing

Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis and the role of APOE ε4 in remodeling functional gradients of the default mode network.

BackgroundAlzheimer's disease (AD) involves Aβ and tau pathology, initiating years before symptoms. the apolipoprotein E ε4 allele (APOE ε4) is the major genetic risk factor, influencing neurodegeneration and functional network disruption. This study investigates how APOE ε4 modulates the default mode network (DMN)'s hierarchical organization to accelerate cognitive decline.ObjectiveThis study aimed to elucidate how APOE ε4 accelerates AD pathological progression by altering the functional gradient hierarchy of DMN, and to evaluate the potential of DMN gradient abnormalities as an early diagno

Voxel-wise Functional Connectivity of the Default Mode Network in Epilepsies: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Default Mode Network (DMN) is recognized to be involved in the generation and propagation of epileptic activities in various epilepsies. Converging evidence has suggested disturbed Functional Connectivity (FC) in epilepsies, which was inferred to be related to underlying pathological mechanisms. However, abnormal changes of FC in DMN revealed by different studies are controversial, which obscures the role of DMN in distinct epilepsies. OBJECTIVE: The present work aims to investigate the voxel-wise FC in DMN across epilepsies Methods: A systematic review was conducted on 22 publish

Functional and Structural Alteration of Default Mode, Executive Control, and Salience Networks in Alcohol Use Disorder.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) has been related to aberrant functional connectivity (FC) in the salience network (SN), executive control network (ECN), and default mode network (DMN). However, there is a lack of comprehensive and simultaneous examination of these networks in patients with AUD and of their relation to potential anatomical changes. We aimed to comprehensively examine the alteration in FC in the three networks in AUD patients, and the correlation of the alteration with anatomical/structural changes (volume) in the neural areas implicated in these networks, by applying voxel-based mor

Default mode network connectivity and cognition in the aging brain: the effects of age, sex, and APOE genotype.

The default mode network (DMN) overlaps with regions showing early Alzheimer's Disease (AD) pathology. Age, sex, and apolipoprotein E ɛ4 are the predominant risk factors for developing AD. How these risk factors interact to influence DMN connectivity and connectivity-cognition relationships before the onset of impairment remains unknown. Here, we examined these issues in 475 cognitively normal adults, targeting total DMN connectivity, its anticorrelated network (acDMN), and the DMN-hippocampal component. There were four main findings. First, in the ɛ3 homozygous group, lower DMN and acDMN conn

Age- and function-related regional changes in cortical folding of the default mode network in older adults.

Healthy aging is accompanied by changes in the functional architecture of the default mode network (DMN), e.g. a posterior to anterior shift (PASA) of activations. The putative structural correlate for this functional reorganization, however, is largely unknown. Changes in gyrification, i.e. decreases of cortical folding were found to be a marker of atrophy of the brain in later decades of life. Therefore, the present study assessed local gyrification indices of the DMN in relation to age and cognitive performance in 749 older adults aged 55-85 years. Age-related decreases in local gyrificatio

Perturbed connectivity of the amygdala and its subregions with the central executive and default mode networks in chronic pain.

Maladaptive responses to pain-related distress, such as pain catastrophizing, amplify the impairments associated with chronic pain. Many of these aspects of chronic pain are similar to affective distress in clinical anxiety disorders. In light of the role of the amygdala in pain and affective distress, disruption of amygdalar functional connectivity in anxiety states, and its implication in the response to noxious stimuli, we investigated amygdala functional connectivity in 17 patients with chronic low back pain and 17 healthy comparison subjects, with respect to normal targets of amygdala sub

Default mode, executive function, and language functional connectivity networks are compromised in mild Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by mental and cognitive problems, particularly with memory, language, visuospatial skills (VS), and executive functions (EF). Advances in the neuroimaging of AD have highlighted dysfunctions in functional connectivity networks (FCNs), especially in the memory related default mode network (DMN). However, little is known about the integrity and clinical significance of FNCs that process other cognitive functions than memory. We evaluated 22 patients with mild AD and 26 healthy controls through a resting state functional MRI scan. We aimed to identify dif

Changes in the default mode network in the prefrontal lobe, posterior cingulated cortex and hippocampus of heroin users.

The default mode network is associated with senior cognitive functions in humans. In this study, we performed independent component analysis of blood oxygenation signals from 14 heroin users and 13 matched normal controls in the resting state through functional MRI scans. Results showed that the default mode network was significantly activated in the prefrontal lobe, posterior cingulated cortex and hippocampus of heroin users, and an enhanced activation signal was observed in the right inferior parietal lobule (P < 0.05, corrected for false discovery rate). Experimental findings indicate that

Quieting "Food Noise": How GLP-1s and Mindfulness Rewire the Default Mode Network (DMN) and Reward Circuits.

This narrative review synthesizes evidence identified through targeted searches of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (2010-2025), with a focused selection of human and mechanistic studies examining GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s), food cue reactivity, prospective cognition, mindfulness-based interventions, and neural network dynamics relevant to 'food noise' and the default mode network (DMN). Food noise is conceptualized here as a form of maladaptive prospection: a faulty way of thinking about the future, characterized by repetitive, cue-driven mental simulation of short-term reward at the

Electrocortical Indices of Default Mode Network-Related Activity in ADHD and Modulation Through Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy.

Research suggests that ADHD is characterized by dominant Default-Mode Network (DMN) and diminished Task Positive Network (TPN) activity, which has been linked to detrimentally affecting attention and executive task-dependent functioning. Interventions targeting this DMN-TPN interplay may be clinically important in ameliorating ADHD symptoms. This hypothesis was explored using frequency and spatial domains of 33-channel EEG data as an index of the EEG-DMN. Specifically, tonic EEG power spectra measures and Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA) analysis during resting-state ey

Altered default mode, limbic, and dorsal attention network connectivity after negative mood induction in problematic internet use.

Problematic internet use is associated with emotion regulation difficulties, and negative mood states are known to trigger such use. However, how negative mood dynamically modulates large-scale brain network connectivity in individuals with problematic internet use remains unclear. This study investigated functional connectivity alterations following negative mood induction using independent component analysis.Twenty individuals with problematic internet use and twenty matched healthy controls underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging before and after negative mood inductio

Default mode network integrity across neuropsychiatric disorders and its relation to social dysfunction: A normative modelling approach.

Structural and functional default mode network (DMN) alterations are common in neuropsychiatric disorders and may contribute transdiagnostically to social dysfunction. Normative modelling enables assessment of DMN alterations at the individual level. This study investigates whether individual deviations in cortical thickness, surface area, and between-network functional connectivity of the DMN differ between schizophrenia (SZ), major depressive disorder (MDD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and healthy controls (HC), and whether these deviations transdiagnostically relate to social dysfunction. Acupuncture for Poststroke Cognitive Impairment Based on Default Mode Network Analysis: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is a prevalent and disabling complication following stroke, affecting critical functions such as memory, attention, language, and executive abilities. Despite the growing clinical burden, standardized and effective treatment strategies for PSCI remain limited. Acupuncture, a key modality in traditional Chinese medicine, has shown promise in improving cognitive outcomes among survivors of stroke. However, the neural mechanisms underlying its efficacy are not well understood. The default mode network (DMN), a brain network implicated in cognitio

Auditory cortical regions show resting-state functional connectivity with the default mode-like network in echolocating bats.

Echolocating bats are among the most social and vocal of all mammals. These animals are ideal subjects for functional MRI (fMRI) studies of auditory social communication given their relatively hypertrophic limbic and auditory neural structures and their reduced ability to hear MRI gradient noise. Yet, no resting-state networks relevant to social cognition (e.g., default mode-like networks or DMLNs) have been identified in bats since there are few, if any, fMRI studies in the chiropteran order. Here, we acquired fMRI data at 7 Tesla from nine lightly anesthetized pale spear-nosed bats (Phyllost
