Atopic dermatitis (a. D.) is a chronically relapsing inflammatory disease of the skin caused by a genetically transmitted hypersensitivity to environmental substances. Its pathogenesis is complex and multifactorial: heredity of atopic constitution, disturbances of humoral (hyperimmunoglobulinemia-E) and cellular (defect of suppressor-T-cells) immunity, abnormal vascular reactions and abnormal skin functions. A. D. shows different forms in different age groups: Eczema infantum in infancy, Eczema flexurarum in childhood and Neurodermatitis disseminata and pruriginosa while and after puberty. Typ

An open, controlled study was carried out in young patients with atopic dermatitis, who during one month received oral anti-psoriatic drug, anapsos (n = 46), or antihistamines (n = 30), simultaneously with topic applications. The activity and extension of the cutaneous lesions improved under both treatments, but more markedly with anapsos in spite of the fact that topical applications did not contain steroids in the group treated with anapsos, and the effect was still appreciable several months after interruption of medication. Anapsos, which was well tolerated, considerably relieved the respi

The history of atopic dermatitis is replete with many disparate theories. The most enduring is the allergic causation theory but definitive, convincing evidence remains elusive. Elevated IgE synthesis is well established and reflects abnormal immune regulation. The basic mechanism for the regulatory defect remains conjectural. Cellular immune functions, including delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity, in vitro lymphocyte transformation and chemotaxis are reduced in atopic dermatitis. However, these abnormalities fluctuate with the clinical condition and may be secondary phenomena. A number of phy

Levels of IgE antibodies to Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis were determined in eleven patients with typical atopic dermatitis, with no history of furuncles or severe staphylococcal infection. Increased IgE binding to S. aureus but not to S. epidermidis was observed. Fifteen patients with hyperimmunoglobulinemia E-staphylococcal abscess syndrome had increased IgE binding not only to S. aureus but also to S. epidermidis. Other control groups of patients with elevated IgE levels or recurrent staphylococcal infection had normal IgE binding activity to both strains of staphyloc

A flare factor is a biologic or environmental factor which induces exacerbation of atopic dermatis. Serosis, sweating, scratchy clothes, allergy, infection, scratching, allergic contact dermatitis, anxiety, and coexisting disease are potential flare factors. Different patients have different flare factors, and individual patients may have different flare factors at each patient visit maximizes chances of eliminating or reducing dermatitis.

Multiple risk factors have been associated with the development of atopic dermatitis (AD). Recent advances in understanding the role of genetics in this disease have been made, with discovery of the filaggrin (FLG) gene as the most notable so far. In addition to FLG gene mutations as a risk factor for AD, a positive family history of atopic or allergic disease in either parent has been shown to confer a greater risk of developing AD. Atopic dermatitis usually presents early in life and is thought to represent the initial step in the "atopic march," which is characterized by the development of

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory condition that significantly affects the quality of life of both patients and their families or caregivers. Recently, treatment for moderate-to-severe AD were limited to conventional immunosuppressive therapies. However, currently, with the approval of biologic treatments and oral small molecules in the past decade, the effective and safe management of patients with AD is possible. Despite these advancements, challenges and unmet needs in clinical practice remain. This includes patients who do not respond well to or cannot tolerate existing trea

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that is multifactorial in nature. Allergic contact dermatitis and protein contact dermatitis are allergic conditions that may occur in the context of atopic dermatitis and be the cause of exacerbations. Although the prevalence of allergic contact dermatitis is similar in atopic patients and the general population, these 2 conditions are frequently associated because atopic inflammation disrupts the skin barrier. Skin tests are therefore recommended in atopic individuals. Dupilumab could be useful for treating allergic contact dermatitis if it

Hormonal and immunologic changes during pregnancy can contribute to the development of different dermatoses, the most common of which is atopic eruption of pregnancy (AEP). Of atopic dermatitis (AD) cases during pregnancy, 80% are new-onset presentations, while 20% represent recurrences or exacerbations of preexisting disease. Evidence on the effects of previous AD on fertility is limited. Different factors influence women's desire to conceive in this setting, and it has been hypothesized that barrier defects and systemic inflammation could contribute to biologic infertility, although more dat

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common skin disease characterized by chronic inflammation and itchiness. Although skin barrier dysfunction and immune abnormalities are thought to contribute to the development of AD, the precise pathogenic mechanism remains to be elucidated. We have developed a unique, diet-induced AD mouse model based on the findings that deficiencies of certain polyunsaturated fatty acids and starches cause AD-like symptoms in hairless mice. Here, we present a protocol and tips for establishing an AD mouse model using a custom diet modified from a widely used standard diet (AIN-7

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory disease. During the last years, researchers have focused on a variety of associated comorbidities, especially psychosocial disease. This article aims at giving an overview over recent data. A systematic literature research was performed in PubMed including data from the time period January 1, 2018 until March 1, 2020. Patients with AD frequently suffer from cocomitant depression, anxiety, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. There is less evidence about the relation between AD and schizophrenia, eating disorder, and obsessive compulsive

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, recurrent skin condition resulting from both genetic and environmental factors. In recent decades, the prevalence of AD has increased considerably in some countries. However, given that the role of genetics is unlikely to have changed over this short period, the increased prevalence is more likely to be explained by changes in environmental and maternal factors. The aim of this review is to comprehensively summarize the various factors impacting AD incidence in offspring and provide guidance for primary prevention. Recent research has demonstrated that envi

AIM: Medical records from 2010-2014 were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed in view of determining the correlations between the clinical severity of atopic dermatitis (AD) and total IgE level, eosinophilia, place of residence, family history of atopy, type of birth, and natural or artificial feeding.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Following medical record review, 296 cases diagnosed with AD were included in the study. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS v20 for determining the frequency and testing the hypotheses, for p < 0.05, by t tests and One-Way ANOVA.
RESULTS: Of the 296 cases, 53%

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is characterized by type 2 helper T (Th2) cell-driven inflammation. Dupilumab is a fully human monoclonal antibody directed against the IL-4 receptor α subunit that blocks the signaling of IL-4 and IL-13, both key cytokines in Th2-mediated pathways. In Phase I and II studies of adults with moderate-to-severe AD, dupilumab administered as monotherapy or with topical corticosteroids resulted in rapid, significant improvements in clinical efficacy, patient-reported outcomes, and Th2-related serum and tissue biomarkers, and shifted the RNA expression profile of lesional skin

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease from which many children and adults suffer. In the Netherlands, the majority of patients with AD are treated in the primary health care setting. There is no clear consensus about whether or not to conduct allergy testing in patients with AD. Determining sensitization to inhalant allergens in children with AD has no consequences for its treatment and course and is therefore not necessary. Allergy testing is useful if the child is suspected of having allergic asthma or allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. Determining sensitization to food al

Atopic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin disorder of variable severity characterized by eczematous skin lesions associated with itching. This disease has an intricate immunologic basis influenced by genetic/familial predisposition and certain environmental, lifestyle, and dietary factors. Recent trends suggest a continuous rise in the prevalence of atopic dermatitis in developed nations and in countries undergoing rapid urbanization and industrialization. Pattern and morphology of skin lesions vary with different age groups, and the course of the disease is punctuated by remissions and
