Allergic contact dermatitis to chlorhexidine.

Chlorhexidine is a commonly used antiseptic agent in the health-care setting. Although exposure to chlorhexidine is very common, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is rarely reported. We report a case series of ACD to chlorhexidine in health-care workers and discuss our rates of allergy to chlorhexidine, from patch-testing performed at the Skin and Cancer Foundation, Melbourne, Australia. Of 7890 patients patch-tested, 840 patients were tested to 0.5% chlorhexidine diacetate with 28 (3%) positive reactions, 13 (2%) of which relevant to their presenting dermatitis. Altogether 1565 patients were

Contact dermatitis: facts and controversies.

The history of contact dermatitis (CD) is inseparable from the history of the patch test, and the patch test is inseparable from the pioneer in the field, Josef Jadassohn (1860-1936). Despite the fact that we have been diagnosing, treating, and investigating the condition for more than 100 years, there are still many unsolved questions and controversies, which show no signs of coming to an end in the foreseeable future. This contribution reviews and highlights some of the disagreements and discrepancies associated with CD. For example: • What is the real sensitizer in balsam of Peru, one of th

Protein contact dermatitis--case report.

Protein contact dermatitis is a skin condition not well known and underdiagnosed by dermatologists, resulting from an IgE-mediated allergic reaction. Clinically it presents as a chronic hand and/or forearms eczema of occupational origin, especially in professionals who work as food handlers. Epicutaneous tests are negative, and to diagnose this condition it is necessary to perform immediate-type allergy tests. The most sensitive and practical is the prick-by-prick test with food that the patient refers to cause intense itching after immediate skin contact. Treatment is symptomatic, and it is m

Contact dermatitis in atopic individuals.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Both atopy and diseases from the spectrum of dermatitis and eczema are among the most frequent clinical problems worldwide; nevertheless, they are still poorly defined and too frequently misdiagnosed. In the present review, studies pertinent to this topic were systematized and critically assessed with particular attention to definitions of relevant diseases. RECENT FINDINGS: The overall message from the research done to date is that various types of dermatitis frequently coexist. Atopy and contact allergy seem independent, while there is insufficient data to state upon the

Allergic contact dermatitis and cosmetics.

Contact dermatitis is a common dermatologic condition that can result from exposure to allergens at home or at work. Cosmetics represent a large diverse group of products that Americans apply to their skin to treat disease or enhance beauty. With increased use of cosmetics, the rate of sensitization to many allergenic components has increased. We review the more common allergens present in cosmetics as well as the types of cosmetics that are known to contain them. With proper education and patch testing, dermatologists will be able to identify contact allergies to cosmetic ingredients and help

Airborne contact dermatitis to drugs.

Contact dermatitis is defined as "airborne" when the causative factor is present in the environment and may determine irritative or allergic skin reactions. It is often work-related. In this review of the literature, we focus our attention on airborne contact dermatitis due to pharmaceutical compounds. Contact reactions to medications, often occupation-related, occur mainly in two exposed groups: employees of pharmaceutical industries involved in the production of the drugs and healthcare workers who use the drugs for therapeutic aims.

Teaching interventions in contact dermatitis.

Prevention of occupational contact dermatitis is of utmost significance for both insurers and legislators because it can preserve the individual's ability to work and result in decreased costs for public health. In the last 20 years, many concepts for educational interventions and a multitude of teaching aids have been developed by insurance associations and public institutions from different countries (eg, the United States, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, and Germany). For didactic purposes, terms of different levels of prevention have been inaugurated in northern Europe in the context of occu

Immunopathology of allergic contact dermatitis.

Allergic contact dermatitis is the consequence of an immune reaction mediated by T cells against low molecular weight chemicals known as haptens. It is a common condition that occurs in all races and age groups and affects the quality of life of those who present it. The immunological mechanism of this disease has been reviewed in recent decades with significant advance in its understanding. The metabolism and pathway of the haptens as well as the activation and mechanism of action of the cells responsible for both the immune reaction and its completion are discussed in this article.

Contact dermatitis in military personnel.

Military personnel encounter the same allergens and irritants as their civilian counterparts and are just as likely to develop contact dermatitis from common exposures encountered in everyday life. In addition, they face some unique exposures that can be difficult to avoid owing to their occupational duties. Contact dermatitis can be detrimental to a military member's career if he or she is unable to perform core duties or avoid the inciting substances. An uncontrolled contact dermatitis can result in the member's being placed on limited-duty (ie, nondeployable) status, needing a job or rate c

Contact dermatitis with henna tattoo.

Allergic and irritant reactions to henna are rare. Para-phenylenediamine, which is sometimes added to obtain a dark, blackish henna, causes the majority of contact dermatitis reported related with tattoos. Allergic contact dermatitis due to temporary paint-on tattoo with black henna is described in two adolescents.

[Immunology of allergic contact dermatitis].

Eczema is one of the most common skin diseases in dermatological practice. The broad medical definition of eczema includes any acute but non-infectious inflammatory reaction of the skin. The relative homogeneity of both the clinical and histological manifestations of eczema is in stark contrast to the profound pathogenetic differences of its various forms. The group of contact dermatitis can be divided into two main categories: irritant and allergic. Irritant contact dermatitis is due to a principally non- immunological inflammatory reaction of the skin to various physical or chemical irritant

[Occupational contact dermatitis in hairdressers].

Numerous data from the medical literature show that working as a hairdresser is associated with the highest risk of occupational contact dermatitis. In Europe, hairdressers rank first of all occupation groups with the highest prevalence of occupational dermatitis. It is estimated that 10-20% and even 50% of hairdressers are affected with skin disorders. Skin problems occur soon after commencing hairdressing, in the first 2 years of work, sometimes during vocational training. The most common factors contributing to skin damage include water, shampoos, detergents, conditioners, hair dyes, bleach

Irritant contact dermatitis from plants.

Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) from plants is a very common phenomenon as potentially irritant plants and plant products are commonly found in the everyday environment, including the home, garden, workplace, and recreational setting. It is therefore essential to have a basic understanding of the various plant-derived physical and chemical irritants. ICD from plants is commonly divided into mechanical irritant contact dermatitis (MICD) and chemical irritant contact dermatitis (CICD). The common mechanical plant irritants include thorns, spines, glochids, trichomes, and sharp-edged leaves. Ma
