BACKGROUND: We analyzed the histological features and DNA flow cytometric results in 34 patients with pheochromocytoma and paragangliomas and attempted correlation with the biological behavior for determination of the malignant potential of these tumors.
METHODS: DNA analysis was done on a FACSort flow cytometer using paraffin-embedded tissues. Histopathological analysis was performed using parameters, i.e., cell size (large, medium, and small), cell size variation, mitotic rate, nuclear pleomorphism, golden yellow to brown pigment in the tumor, necrosis, and venous invasion.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC), a rare neoplasm of the major salivary glands, is a high-grade carcinoma with a predilection for elderly men. The authors investigated the prognostic role of p53, c-erbB2, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), and DNA flow cytometry in a pathobiological evaluation of a cohort of 30 patients with these neoplasms. An experimental model of anomalous arrangement of the pancreaticobiliary ducts (APBD) was produced by pancreaticocholecystostomy performed in 29 mongrel dogs. Our purpose was to study carcinogenesis of the extrahepatic biliary tract by DNA ploidy analysis with cytofluorometry. The amylase level in the bile was elevated in all 25 dogs tested except the controls. The phospholipase A2 level in the bile was elevated in all selected dogs except the controls. Chromosomes and histology were successfully studied in 33 childhood renal tumors. Thirty-one tumors were classified as one of four subtypes of Wilms' tumor. BACKGROUND: The gibel carp is a fish species with dual reproduction modes, gynogenesis and sexual reproduction, coexisting in mixed diploid-polyploid populations. Following the Red Queen (RQ) assumption, asexual organisms are, due to their low genetic diversity, targets for parasite adaptation. Because MHC polymorphism is maintained by selection from parasites and sexual selection, MHC genes are considered as a suitable candidate for testing the RQ hypothesis.
