Targeted Recruitment of Cross-Kingdom Phosphate-Solubilizing Microbes Drives Asymmetric Rhizosphere Responses Between Solanum rostratum and Cenchrus pauciflorus Benth. in Sandy Habitats.

In resource-poor sandy habitats, alien plant co-invasion often triggers intense belowground competition mediated by rhizosphere microorganisms. However, the mechanisms by which these plants overcome nutrient limitations remain unclear. Here, we conducted an eight-month in situ monitoring of single- and co-invasion plots of Solanum rostratum and Cenchrus pauciflorus Benth. in the Horqin Sandy Land. By integrating soil enzyme assays with 16S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) amplicon sequencing, we characterized their rhizosphere microbial community assembly. Co-invasion exposed both sp

An Avian-Inspired Computational Model Driven by Texture-Color Prioritization Strategies in Visual Processing.

Birds have evolved distinctive visual processing strategies to adapt to complex natural environments. Pigeons can discriminate visual objects using multiple cues, including local texture, color, and shape. However, natural objects contain these cues simultaneously, and it remains unclear how the pigeon visual system balances these visual features when they co-occur. Whether such biological feature-prioritization principles can inform computational recognition models also remains unknown. Here, we combined behavioral delayed matching-to-sample tasks, in vivo electrophysiological recordings from

Experimental Investigation on Hover Performance of a Ducted Coaxial-Rotor UAV.

This paper presents experimental investigations on aerodynamic performance of a ducted coaxial-rotor system to evaluate its potential application as a small unmanned aerial vehicle (SUAV). Aimed at determining the influence of design parameters (rotor spacing, tip clearance and rotor position within the duct) on hover performance, a variety of systematic measurements for several correlative configurations (single/coaxial rotor with or without a duct) in terms of thrust and torque, as well as power, were conducted in an attempt to identify a better aerodynamic configuration. The experimental re

The effects of experimental irrigation on plant productivity, insect abundance and the non-breeding season performance of a migratory songbird.

Migratory bird populations are often limited by food during the non-breeding season. Correlative evidence suggests that food abundance on territories varies among years in relation to rainfall, which affects plant productivity and arthropod biomass. At the Font Hill Nature Preserve in Jamaica, we used an irrigation experiment to test the hypothesis that rainfall affects the condition of wintering American redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla) via intermediate effects on plant productivity and arthropod abundance. Experimental plots were irrigated in late February and early March to simulate a mid-se

Social status predicts how sex steroid receptors regulate complex behavior across levels of biological organization.

Social status strongly affects behavior and physiology, in part mediated by gonadal hormones, although how each sex steroid acts across levels of biological organization is not well understood. We examine the role of sex steroids in modulating social behavior in dominant (DOM) and subordinate (SUB) males of a highly social fish, Astatotilapia burtoni. We first used agonists and antagonists to each sex steroid receptor and found that androgens and progestins modulate courtship behavior only in DOM, whereas estrogens modulate aggressive behavior independent of social status. We then examined the

Frontal neurons driving competitive behaviour and ecology of social groups.

Competitive interactions have a vital role in the ecology of most animal species1-3 and powerfully influence the behaviour of groups4,5. To succeed, individuals must exert effort based on not only the resources available but also the social rank and behaviour of other group members2,6,7. The single-cellular mechanisms that precisely drive competitive interactions or the behaviour of social groups, however, remain poorly understood. Here we developed a naturalistic group paradigm in which large cohorts of mice competitively foraged for food as we wirelessly tracked neuronal activities across th

An Exploration of the Experience of Harm in the Bondage/Discipline/Sadomasochism Community.

This study sought to gain insight into the attitudes, beliefs, and values that shape bondage/discipline/sadomasochism (BDSM) activities and to explore the degree and consequences of unintended or non-negotiated harms, including physical, emotional, and sexual violence. A qualitative approach, consisting of 22 semistructured interviews and over 150 hours of observations of BDSM events and activities, was used to develop an in-depth exploration of the lived experiences of participants. Thematic analysis was employed to elucidate the ways in which participants define and in some cases experience

From antisocial behavior to violence: a model for the amplifying role of coercive joining in adolescent friendships.

BACKGROUND: Aggression is one of the more stable characteristics of child and adolescent development, and violent behavior in early adulthood is often foreshadowed by aggressive behavior in childhood and early adolescence. Considerable evidence has linked coercive family interactions to aggressive behavior in childhood, but less research has been conducted on the joint role of family and peer interaction in the escalation of aggression to violence in adulthood. METHODS: We coded family interactions at age 12-13 and friendship interaction at age 16-17 in a multiethnic sample of youth and famil

Humiliation, loss and other types of life events and difficulties: a comparison of depressed subjects, healthy controls and their siblings.

BACKGROUND: It has been proposed that adverse life events involving loss or humiliation are particularly potent in provoking depressive episodes. We have also previously suggested that experiencing high rates of non-severe events may play a role in the development of resilience to the impact of severe threatening events when these occur. METHOD: The Life Events and Difficulties Schedule (LEDS) (Brown & Harris, 1978) was used to record the life events experienced by 108 depressed probands and their nearest aged siblings as well as 105 healthy control subjects and their nearest aged siblings. Dysfunction of Serotonergic and Dopaminergic Neuronal Systems in the Antidepressant-Resistant Impairment of Social Behaviors Induced by Social Defeat Stress Exposure as Juveniles.

BACKGROUND: Extensive studies have been performed on the role of monoaminergic neuronal systems in rodents exposed to social defeat stress as adults. In the present study, we investigated the role of monoaminergic neuronal systems in the impairment of social behaviors induced by social defeat stress exposure as juveniles. METHODS: Juvenile, male C57BL/6J mice were exposed to social defeat stress for 10 consecutive days. From 1 day after the last stress exposure, desipramine, sertraline, and aripiprazole were administered for 15 days. Social behaviors were assessed at 1 and 15 days after the l

Social defeat stress switches the neural system mediating benzodiazepine conditioned motivation.

Benzodiazepines have been demonstrated to have a high abuse liability in persons suffering from anxiety but have demonstrated mixed abuse liability findings in preclinical models. We hypothesized that by modeling anxiety in a male C57BL/6 mouse model it would be possible to reveal a preference for benzodiazepines within this subpopulation through negative reinforcement. Using the Tube Test of Social Dominance and the Resident/Intruder Paradigm we investigated whether animals identified as dominant or submissive/defeated would differentially display a preference for midazolam (a short acting be

Twins in a child psychiatry clinic.

The authors found that 22 of the 2,015 referrals to a children's psychiatric clinic during a six-year period were twins--half the number that would be expected on the basis of the national incidence of twins. Evidence of minimal brain dysfunction was found in a higher percentage of the twins than in a matched nontwin group. The authors suggest that factors often inherent in twins (e.g., prematurity and birth difficulties) may be related to this finding.

In vivo effects of an intrafollicular injection of insulin-like growth factor 1 on the mechanism of follicle deviation in heifers and mares.

In cattle and mares, free insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is higher in the future dominant follicle (F1) than in the future largest subordinate follicle (F2) before deviation in diameter or selection is manifested between the two follicles. The effect of IGF-1 on other follicular-fluid factors and on the destiny of F2 were studied in two experiments in each species, using a total of 40 heifers and 42 mares. An injection of IGF-1 was made into F2 at the expected beginning of deviation (heifers, F1 >or= 8.5 mm; mares, F1 >or= 20.0 mm; Hour 0). In heifers, follicular fluid was taken from F2

Social defeat stress causes depression-like behavior with metabolite changes in the prefrontal cortex of rats.

Major depressive disorder is a serious mental disorder with high morbidity and mortality. The role of social stress in the development of depression remains unclear. Here, we used the social defeat stress paradigm to induce depression-like behavior in rats, then evaluated the behavior of the rats and measured metabolic changes in the prefrontal cortex using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Within the first week after the social defeat procedure, the sucrose preference test (SPT), open field test (OFT), elevated plus maze (EPM) and forced swim test (FST) were conducted to examine the depre

Stress-induced increases in depression-like and cocaine place-conditioned behaviors are reversed by disruption of memories during reconsolidation.

Maladaptive behavioral responses characteristic of post-traumatic stress disorders are notably resistant to treatment. We hypothesized that the pharmacological disruption of memories activated during reconsolidation might reverse established stress-induced increases in depression-like behaviors and cocaine reward. C57BL/6J mice were subjected to repeated social defeat stress (SDS), and examined for time spent immobile in a subsequent forced swim test (FST). An additional set of SDS-exposed mice were place-conditioned with cocaine, and tested for cocaine-conditioned place preference (CPP). All

Life event dimensions of loss, humiliation, entrapment, and danger in the prediction of onsets of major depression and generalized anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Although substantial evidence suggests that stressful life events predispose to the onset of episodes of depression and anxiety, the essential features of these events that are depressogenic and anxiogenic remain uncertain. METHODS: High contextual threat stressful life events, assessed in 98 592 person-months from 7322 male and female adult twins ascertained from a population-based registry, were blindly rated on the dimensions of humiliation, entrapment, loss, and danger and their categories. Onsets of pure major depression (MD), pure generalized anxiety syndrome (GAS) (defined

Linguistic-visual routines and name activation in visual world studies of spoken word recognition.

We address a longstanding issue in visual world studies of speech and spoken word recognition: What role does retrieval of object names play in mediating eye movements to displayed objects? We propose a novel "linguistic-visual routines" linking hypothesis in which the representations of spoken words are linked to schematic visual representations and visuomotor routines, without involvement of object names. When triggered during reference resolution, these routines direct gaze to objects in a co-present visual world that are consistent with the schematic visual representations. To evaluate pos

Vicarious Social Defeat Stress Induces Depression-Related Outcomes in Female Mice.

BACKGROUND: Stress is a prevailing risk factor for mood-related illnesses, wherein women represent the majority of those affected by major depression. Despite the growing literature suggesting that affective disorders can arise after a traumatic event is vicariously experienced, this relationship remains understudied in female subjects at the preclinical level. Thus, the objective of the current investigation was to examine whether exposure to emotional and/or psychological stress (ES) mediates depression-related outcomes in female mice. METHODS: Female C57BL/6 mice (8 weeks old, null parity)

Interpersonal problems and personality features as mediators between attachment and intimate partner violence.

We examined whether hostile dominant interpersonal problems (HDIP), antisocial features, and borderline features mediated the relationship between attachment (anxiety or avoidance) and intimate partner violence (IPV) with a sample of 132 male partner abusers. We conducted two path analyses with avoidant attachment as the predictor in one model and anxious attachment as the predictor in a second model. In both models, HDIP, antisocial features, and borderline features were the mediators with IPV as the criterion. For both models, the attachment variable had statistically significant path values
