Aural symptoms in patients referred for temporomandibular pain/dysfunction.

With the aim of studying frequency of aural symptoms and associations with symptoms of TMD new patients referred to the Orofacial Pain Clinic, Odontologen, Göteborg, were asked, at their first appointment and before meeting a specialist, to report any symptoms regarding pain or fullness/swelling of the ear, impaired hearing, sensitivity to sound, and irritation/itching of the ear. They also answered a standardized questionnaire regarding temporomandibular pain and/or dysfunction, and classified their degree of TMD symptoms on a five-point verbal scale and a visual analogue scale. 108 consecuti

The Otalgia Point: A Novel Clinical Gesture in Otolaryngology.

INTRODUCTION: In cases of otalgia without any accompanying findings, some patients locate their otalgia below the attachment of the lobule, at the apex of the jugulodigastric region. PURPOSE: To present a series of these patients for whom nasal steroids or myringotomy usually ameliorated their pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients with normal physical examinations, tympanograms, and age-appropriate audiograms spontaneously indicated otalgia at "the otalgia point." Inspection of the oropharynx and nasal airway, palpation of the neck and temporal mandibular joints, and nasopharyngos

Prevalence of patients harboring temporomandibular disorders in an otorhinolaryngology department.

UNLABELLED: The interaction between temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and otalgia is, even nowadays, a reason for speculation and hypotheses raising. Several researchers suggest causes, consequences and alleged treatments. STUDY DESIGN: This is an epidemiological, sectional cohort study of prevalence. AIM: The study demonstrates the prevalence of patients harboring TMDs in an otorhinolaryngology department. MATERIAL AND METHODS: During a two-month period, 221 patients from the Otorhinolaryngology Department of the Hospital da Cidade de Passo Fundo, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil were an

Intrapetrous carotid artery aneurysm presenting as epistaxis and otalgia.

Aneurysm of the intrapetrous carotid artery is an extremely rare and potentially serious occurrence that presents diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties. Such aneurysms may follow trauma, atherosclerosis, mastoid surgery or most commonly can represent a developmental abnormality. We present the case of an 18-year-old female with a short history of recurrent left-sided otalgia and epistaxis who underwent successful endovascular balloon entrapment of a left intrapetrous carotid aneurysm.

Sucralfate in alleviating post-tonsillectomy pain.

Tonsillectomy results in severe throat pain, ear pain, and trismus until the exposed and inflamed muscle becomes covered with regenerated mucosa. Sucralfate binds with the fibrinous exudate of duodenal ulcers, forming a protective barrier that promotes healing. If a similar buffer could be created in the tonsillar bed, morbidity may be diminished. A double-blind, randomized study was completed in 34 adult patients to determine whether sucralfate, given four times daily for 10 days as a swish and swallow, would significantly reduce postoperative pain and promote healing and recovery. Sucralfate

An exploratory study of the effects of disco music on the auditory and vestibular systems.

The records were examined of 575 university students given audiometry and queried on their attendance at discos and on certain symptoms (vertigo, tinnitus, headache, nausea, otalgia) often associated with the Tullio effect. Of these, 365 Ss had attended discos (local discos were at 123-126 dBC), 128 had binaural greater than or equal to 25 db HTLs at 4 and/or 6 kc/s, and 82 had Tullio symptoms, while 44 had both audiometric loss and Tullio symptoms. This exploratory retrospective survey seemed to show that disco-going adversely affected both auditory and vestibular mechanisms in some Ss. Sugge

Higher serum sCD14 is an independent biomarker for porto-sinusoidal vascular disease risk in CVID.

The incidence of primary mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma (MANEC) is rapidly increasing. MANEC mainly arises from the gastrointestinal tract, but occasionally it occurs as a pathological type of second primary malignancy (SPM). These SPMs can occur in the nasopharynx. Herein we describe the case of a first secondary nasopharyngeal MANEC that was detected 20 years after radical radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The patient was a 50-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital after experiencing 1 month of left nasal congestion and ipsilateral tinnitus caused by a nasopharyngeal mas

Povidone iodine soaked gelfoam for the treatment of recalcitrant otomycosis - Our experiences at a tertiary care teaching hospital of eastern India.

INTRODUCTION: Otomycosis is a common clinical condition seen in outpatient department of otorhinolaryngology. The treatment of the otomycosis is also very simple. However, sometime it is difficult to treat otomycosis along with mastoid cavity, chronic suppurative otitis media, immunocompromised patient, etc. with conventional treatment, called recalcitrant otomycosis. Here, we describe a technique of treatment for recalcitrant otomycosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective observational study/clinical trial carried out on 44 patients of recalcitrant otomycosis. They are divided into

Titanium Allergy: An Uncommon Cause of Pain in Cochlear Implant Recipients.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical presentation and course of 2 cochlear implant (CI) recipients with a titanium allergy. PATIENTS: A 66-year-old female and a 41-year-old female both underwent unilateral cochlear implantation, immediately after which they experienced otalgia that persisted and negatively impacted their ability to wear their CI external processor. INTERVENTIONS: Patch testing for cochlear implant allergy was performed. Surgical explantation of the CI with the exposed titanium to remove the allergen was recommended, with a subsequent surgery offered with implantation of a CI

Spontaneous Otogenic Intracranial Pneumocephalus: A Case Report.

Spontaneous otogenic pneumocephalus (SOP) is a rare condition. We report a case of SOP that may be related to repeated Valsalva maneuvers. A young woman underwent repeated Valsalva maneuvers to restore Eustachian tube function and subsequently developed symptoms that included otalgia, headache, and nausea. A temporal bone computed tomography scan was performed and a diagnosis of SOP was made. Subsequent surgical treatment was performed and no recurrence was found during the 1-year follow-up period. The rarity of SOP and its potential for misdiagnosis pose significant challenges in clinical pra

An anti-barotrauma system for preventing barotrauma during hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

In the present study, a tympanometry-based anti-barotrauma (ABT) device was designed using eardrum admittance measurements to develop an objective method of preventing barotrauma that occurs during hyperbaric oxygen (HBO₂) therapy. The middle ear space requires active equalization, and barotrauma of these tissues during HBO₂therapy constitutes the most common treatment-associated injury. Decongestant nasal sprays and nasal steroids are used, but their efficacy is questionable to prevent middle ear barotrauma (MEB) during HBO₂ treatment. Accordingly, a tympanometry-based ABT device was designed

Otalgia as the sole presenting manifestation of subdural hematoma.

A case is reported of a 57-year-old man with sudden development of nontraumatic left-sided otalgia without any localizing features on otolaryngologic or neurologic examinations. The condition persisted despite empirical antibiotic therapy and simple analgesics. A subsequent computed tomography of the head revealed a subacute left frontoparietal subdural hematoma that was confirmed on magnetic resonance imaging. Neurosurgical drainage was performed with complete symptom resolution. This case report illustrates a possible rare sole presenting manifestation of subdural hematoma. This condition sh
