Brugia malayi and other filarial parasite species in animals in areas endemic for lymphatic filariasis in Belitung District, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Brugia malayi is the most common cause of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in Indonesia. A zoophilic ecotype that infects both humans and animals occur in Belitung District in Indonesia. The district received five annual rounds of mass drug administration (MDA) between 2006 and 2010 and passed three transmission assessment surveys (TAS) in subsequent years. However, a survey in five villages in 2021 showed a microfilaria (Mf) prevalence of 2.1% in humans. The reappearance of B. malayi infection in humans may be due to reintroduction from animal reservoirs. The goal of this study was to de

Isolation of a Marker Olean-12-en-28-butanol Derivative from Viscum continuum E. Mey. Ex Sprague and the Evaluation of Its Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Potentials.

Viscum continuum E. Mey. Ex Sprague (Mistletoe) is a semi-parasitic plant that grows on the branches of other trees with reported numerous biological activities. This study was aimed at isolating a compound/s that will be used as a standard reference for quality control of South African-based commercialized mistletoe products and to further perform antioxidant and antimicrobial tests on the isolated compound. A dried sample of mistletoe was ground and extracted successively with hexane, dichloromethane (DCM), acetone and methanol using a serial exhaustive cold maceration procedure. The compoun

Variation in the Chemical Sensitivity of Earthworms from Field Populations to Imidacloprid and Copper.

The chemical risk of pesticides for nontarget soil macroorganisms has mainly been assessed using the compost earthworm Eisenia fetida. However, E. fetida does not occur in agroecosystems, and it is generally less sensitive than other earthworm species. Thus, the extrapolation of its response to pesticides to other earthworm species may lead to uncertainties in risk assessment. Because toxicity data for other earthworms are scarce, we assessed the chemical sensitivity of five species (Allolobophora chlorotica, Aporrectodea caliginosa, Aporrectodea longa, Aporrectodea rosea, and Lumbricus rubell

Phospholipase Dδ and H2S increase the production of NADPH oxidase-dependent H2O2 to respond to osmotic stress-induced stomatal closure in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Osmotic stress is one of the main stresses that seriously affects the survival of plants, destroying normal cell activities, and potentially leading to plant death. Phospholipase D (PLD), a major lipid hydrolase, hydrolyzes membrane phospholipids to produce phosphatidic acid (PA) and responds to many abiotic stresses. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emerges as the third gaseous signaling molecule involved in the complex network of signaling events. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) plays a crucial role as a signaling molecule in plant development and growth, and responds to various abiotic and biotic stresses.

Investigation of Armigeres subalbatus, a vector of zoonotic Brugia pahangi filariasis in plantation areas in Suratthani, Southern Thailand.

In recent years, children in Thailand have been infected with zoonotic Brugia pahangi. However, the local environment of rubber or oil palm plantations, which would increase their exposure to risk factors of the infection due to mosquito transmission, is unclear. The present study first sought to determine the extent to which variations in the local landscape, such as the elevated versus low-lying ecotope of rubber or oil palm plantations, in a 2-km radius of the geographically defined landscape in a rural area of Suratthani, Southern Thailand could influence the abundance of Armigeres subalba

Overexpression of IRM1 enhances resistance to aphids in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Aphids are insects that cause direct damage to crops by the removal of phloem sap, but more importantly they spread devastating viruses. Aphids use their sophisticated mouthpart (i.e. stylet) to feed from the phloem sieve elements of the host plant. To identify genes that affect host plant resistance to aphids, we previously screened an Arabidopsis thaliana activation tag mutant collection. In such mutants, tagged genes are overexpressed by a strong 35S enhancer adjacent to the natural promoter, resulting in a dominant gain-of-function phenotype. We previously identified several of these mutan

Seasonal variation in wind speed and oceanic salt spray favors delayed reproduction in coastal yellow monkeyflowers.

PREMISE: The optimal timing of reproduction depends on the relative risk and benefit of continued growth. These risks and benefits depend on the local environment, which varies seasonally. While temperature and water availability are well-studied selective agents on reproductive timing, less is known about other seasonally variable factors. METHODS: To test whether seasonal variation in wind and salt spray influences selection on reproductive timing, we manipulated flowering time and ocean exposure in a coastal environment. Flowering plants from 12 yellow monkeyflower populations that span a

The histological and molecular response of acute hypoxia and reoxygenation in rainbow trout and steelhead.

Hypoxia is a critical environmental stressor affecting fish survival and physiological function. Landlocked rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and anadromous steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss), two ecotypes of the same species, exhibit distinct physiological adaptations to fluctuating oxygen levels. To investigate their responses to acute hypoxia in these fish, brain histology and transcriptome analyses were conducted before stress, after hypoxia (12 and 24 h), and after reoxygenation (24 h). The results showed that the number of vacuolated nerve cells in the brain increased with the duration of

Genomic identification of direct seeding and evolutionary lineages by combining heterogeneous genomic resources.

BACKGROUND: Human-induced habitat changes threaten biodiversity, prompting large-scale restoration initiatives. Revegetation through direct seeding is common in agricultural and infrastructure construction projects, yet the provenance of seed material and its genetic impacts on natural populations remain underexplored. Introducing foreign ecotypes can lead to unintended consequences, as they may be adapted to different environmental conditions or represent distinct evolutionary lineages. In Switzerland, direct seeding is widely used to promote dry meadows, often using seeds of the Carthusian p

Hydrocarbon metabolism and petroleum seepage as ecological and evolutionary drivers for Cycloclasticus.

Aqueous-soluble hydrocarbons dissolve into the ocean's interior and structure deep-sea microbial populations influenced by natural oil seeps and spills. Among these hydrocarbons, n-pentane, is a seawater-soluble, volatile compound abundant in petroleum products and reservoirs, which partially partitions to the deep-water column following release from the seafloor. In this study, we explore the ecology and niche partitioning of two free-living Cycloclasticus strains recovered from seawater incubations with n-pentane and distinguish them as an open ocean variant and a seep-proximal variant, each

Multi-class plant hormone HILIC-MS/MS analysis coupled with high-throughput phenotyping to investigate plant-environment interactions.

Plant hormones are chemical signals governing almost every aspect of a plant's life cycle and responses to environmental cues. They are enmeshed within complex signaling networks that can only be deciphered by using broad-scale analytical methods to capture information about several plant hormone classes simultaneously. Methods used for this purpose are all based on reversed-phase (RP) liquid chromatography and mass spectrometric detection. Hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) is an alternative chromatographic method that performs well in analyses of biological samples. We therefore

Differences in PLA2 Constitution Distinguish the Venom of Two Endemic Brazilian Mountain Lanceheads, Bothrops cotiara and Bothrops fonsecai.

Interspecific differences in snake venom compositions can result from distinct regulatory mechanisms acting in each species. However, comparative analyses focusing on identifying regulatory elements and patterns that led to distinct venom composition are still scarce. Among venomous snakes, Bothrops cotiara and Bothrops fonsecai represent ideal models to complement our understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of venom production. These recently diverged species share a similar specialized diet, habitat, and natural history, but each presents a distinct venom phenotype. Here, we integrated da

Development of a control strategy towards elimination of Trypanosoma evansi infection (surra) in camels in Africa.

With an increasing worldwide population that presently exceeds 38 million, camels are important source of meat, milk, and transportation of goods, in many regions of the world. Camels are particularly critical in the northern parts of Africa, above the tsetse belt. However, camel breeding areas are expanding into southern areas, under the pressures of global warming, leading to increasing risk of acquiring parasitic infections in these non-traditional ecotypes. Common biting flies (tabanids, stomoxyine flies, and Hippobosca camelina) act as mechanical vectors, resulting in exposure to trypanos

Human pediculosis, a global public health problem.

BACKGROUND: Human pediculosis is caused by hematophagous lice, which are transmitted between individuals via direct and/or indirect contact. Despite the public health importance of louse infestation, information concerning the global burden of pediculosis and the epidemiological landscape of louse-borne diseases is limited. The aim of this review was to summarize the biology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and control of lice infestation in humans. We also discussed the latest advances in molecular taxonomy and molecular genetics of lice. METHODS: We searched five electronic bibliographic databases

Malaria risk stratification in Colombia 2010 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: Heterogeneity and focalization are the most common epidemiological characteristics of endemic countries in the Americas, where malaria transmission is moderate and low. During malaria elimination, the first step is to perform a risk stratification exercise to prioritize interventions. This study aimed to identify malaria risk strata in the ecoepidemiological regions of Colombia. METHODS: This was a descriptive and retrospective study using cumulative malaria cases in 1,122 municipalities of Colombia from 2010 to 2019. To identify the strata, the criteria proposed by PAHO were adap

It's time to stop sweeping recombination rate under the genome scan rug.

Different parts of the genome can vary widely in their evolutionary histories and sequence divergence from other species. Indeed, some of the most interesting biology (e.g., hybridization, horizontal gene transfer, variable mutation rates across the genome) is revealed by the discordant relationships between taxa across the genome. The goal for much of evolutionary genetics is centred on understanding the evolutionary processes by which such varied signatures arise and are maintained. Many evolutionary genetics studies seek to identify signatures of positive selection between two closely relat

A successful new approach to honeybee semen cryopreservation.

Honeybee biodiversity is under massive threat, and improved methods for gamete cryopreservation could be a precious tool for both the in situ- and ex situ-conservation of subspecies and ecotypes. Recent cryoprotocols for drone semen have improved the viability and fertility of frozen-thawed semen by using increased diluent:semen-ratios, but there is still much room for progress. As semen cryopreserved after dilution often appeared hyperactive, we speculated that the disruption of sperm-sperm interactions during dilution and cryopreservation could reduce the fertile lifespan of the cells. We th

The Roles of Contrasting Host Types on the Environmental Abundance of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, an Emerging Zoonotic Pathogen.

Fundamental knowledge of the role of hosts in shaping vector-borne pathogen abundance is critical to understanding the ecology of these disease systems; yet the roles can be challenging to tease apart, especially for pathogens vectored by generalist feeders with multiple hosts. In this study, we aimed to quantify the relative contributions of hypothesised pathogen transmission hosts (deer and sheep) and non-transmission hosts (birds and rodents) to the environmental abundance of Anaplasma phagocytophilum (ecotypes I and II) in Ixodes ricinus ticks. Anaplasma phagocytophilum is a zoonotic patho

Adrenal tumor microenvironment: hormone-immune crosstalk, molecular heterogeneity, and immunotherapeutic opportunities.

Adrenal tumors comprise a heterogeneous spectrum ranging from functional adenomas to aggressive adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) and pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PHEO/PPGL) with metastatic potential. Although traditionally interpreted through hormone excess and oncogenic alterations, current evidence indicates that these tumors are endocrine-shaped immune ecosystems in which hormone secretion, molecular subtype, stromal architecture, metabolic stress, and immune infiltration interact to determine tumor behavior and therapeutic vulnerability. Across subtypes, distinct immune-stromal states eme

Insights into spatio-temporal dynamics of Anopheles vectors while approaching malaria elimination along the Thailand-Cambodia border.

The international borders of Thailand are well recognized as areas with high malaria transmission risk. Although Sisaket Province, bordering Cambodia, is recognized as a malaria-prone area, major progress towards malaria elimination has been made. In fact, this province was ranked as having high malaria incidence in Thailand decades ago, increasing its potential for malaria re-establishment. To devise a re-establishment strategy, this work investigated the spatio-temporal dynamics of Anopheles and examined the malariogenic potential of villages in Sisaket Province. Human landing catches (HLCs)
