Residue depletion and temperature- and dose-dependent withdrawal period of Oxolinic acid in Japanese eel Anguilla Japonica following bath administration under laboratory and field conditions.

Oxolinic acid (OA) is a quinolone class antimicrobial agent widely used in aquaculture, yet its off-label application via bath administration in Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) has raised concerns regarding tissue residue persistence and appropriate withdrawal periods (WTs). This study aimed to investigate the residue depletion kinetics and calculate the WTs of OA in A. japonica following 12 h bath treatment under different water temperatures (20 °C and 28 °C) and exposure concentrations (10 and 20 mg/L). Laboratory trials were conducted under controlled conditions using recirculating systems

Cloning of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) precursor cDNA and immunohistochemical detection of CRH peptide in the brain of the Japanese eel, paying special attention to gonadotropin-releasing hormone.

The stress-related corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) was first identified by isolation of its cDNA from the brain of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica. CRH cDNA encodes a signal peptide, a cryptic peptide and CRH (41 amino acids). The sequence homology to mammalian CRH is high. Next, the distribution of CRH-immunoreactive (ir) cell bodies and fibers in the brain and pituitary were examined by immunohistochemistry. CRH-ir cell bodies were detected in several brain regions, e.g., nucleus preopticus pars magnocellularis, nucleus preopticus pars gigantocellularis and formatio reticularis supe

Molecular characterization of three GnRH receptor paralogs in the European eel, Anguilla anguilla: tissue-distribution and changes in transcript abundance during artificially induced sexual development.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRH-R) activation stimulates synthesis and release of gonadotropins in the vertebrate pituitary and also mediates other processes both in the brain and in peripheral tissues. To better understand the differential function of multiple GnRH-R paralogs, three GnRH-R genes (gnrhr1a, 1b, and 2) were isolated and characterized in the European eel. All three gnrhr genes were expressed in the brain and pituitary of pre-pubertal eels, and also in several peripheral tissues, notably gills and kidneys. During hormonally induced sexual maturation, pituitary expres

Aporocotyle mariachristinae n. sp., and A. ymakara Villalba & Fernández, 1986 (Digenea: Aporocotylidae) of the pink cusk-eel, Genypterus blacodes (Ophidiiformes: Ophidiidae) from Patagonia, Argentina.

Aporocotyle mariachristinae n. sp. and A. ymakara Villalba & Fernández, 1986 were collected from the bulbus arteriosus and ventral aorta of pink cusk-eels, Genypterus blacodes (Forster, 1801) from Patagonia, Argentina. A. mariachristinae n. sp. can be distinguished from all the species of Aporocotyle by the asymmetrical extension of posterior caeca (right posterior caecum longer, terminating at the area between mid-level of ovary and posterior body end; left posterior caecum shorter, terminating at the area between mid-level of cirrus sac and posterior to reproductive organs), the distribution

Co-localization and secretion of parathyrin of Stannius corpuscles (immunoreactive parathyroid hormone) and of secretory glycoproteins including secretory protein-I in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.).

Until recently, teleosts were considered to be devoid of parathyroids. We showed recently that the corpuscles of Stannius, that structurally have features in common with the parathyroid gland, produce a molecule resembling mammalian parathyroid hormone (PTH). We refer to this molecule as parathyrin of corpuscles of Stannius (PCS). Parathyroid secretory protein-I (SP-I) is an acidic glycoprotein, probably identical to adrenal chromogranin A, that is co-stored and co-secreted with PTH. In the present study, PCS was localized in secretory granules of fresh water eels by immunocytochemistry. In ad

Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae (Yin & Sproston, 1948) from the giant mottled eel Anguilla marmorata Quoy & Gaimard, 1824, in the Phongolo River, South Africa: an invader on the African continent.

The global invasive anguillid gill parasite Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae (Yin and Sproston, 1948) has only recently been documented from eels in South Africa. As there is no known eel trade in South Africa, the source of introduction of this parasite has been debated, and its status as an alien parasite was rendered uncertain. We report on the first infection of Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae from the giant mottled eel Anguilla marmorata from the Phongolo River (South Africa) using classic morphological and molecular methodologies and clarify the introduction status category of this parasite as

Is the voluntary control of exercise in man necessary for the ventilatory response?

The ventilatory response to electrically induced exercise (EEL) was studied in eighteen normal subjects and compared with the response to performing the same exercise voluntarily (EV). EEL was produced by surface electrode stimulation of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles so as to cause a pushing movement at 1 HZ against a spring load; this produced no pain or discomfort. Matching of EV to EEL was achieved by subjects copying a tension signal recorded during EEL and displayed on a storage oscilloscope. There were no differences between the resting states measured before either form of exerci

Effects of environmental cocaine concentrations on COX and caspase-3 activity, GRP-78, ALT, CRP and blood glucose levels in the liver and kidney of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla).

Cocaine is one of the most widely used illicit drugs in the world, and as a result of incomplete removal by sewage treatment plants it is found in surface waters, where it represents a new potential risk for aquatic organisms. In this study we evaluated the influence of environmental concentrations of cocaine on the liver and the kidney of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). The eels were exposed to 20 ng L-1 of cocaine for fifty days, after which, three and ten days after the interruption of cocaine exposure their livers and kidneys were compared to controls. The general morphology of the t

Distribution of the mRNA encoding the four dopamine D(1) receptor subtypes in the brain of the european eel (Anguilla anguilla): comparative approach to the function of D(1) receptors in vertebrates.

Four subtypes of D(1) dopamine receptors are expressed in the brain of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), an elopomorph teleost. To correlate this molecular multiplicity with specific localisation and functions, the distribution of the D(1) receptor transcripts was analysed by in situ hybridisation. The four D(1) receptor transcripts exhibit largely overlapping expression territories. In telencephalon, they are found in the olfactory bulb and the dorsal telencephalon (except its lateral part) but are most abundant in the subpallial areas. More caudally, the entopeduncular nucleus, preoptic

Evidence for different classes of calcitonin binding sites in rat CNS: an autoradiographic study with carbo-calcitonin.

The distribution of binding sites in the rat CNS for a synthetic analogue of eel calcitonin, [Asu1-7]eel calcitonin (carboCT) was investigated. This distribution was compared to that for the natural peptide to see whether a modified molecule would also reveal different classes of binding sites for CT. The regional distribution of 125I-carboCT binding in coronal sections of rat CNS was examined by an in vitro autoradiographic technique. Non-specific binding was assessed after addition of excess cold carboCT or eel CT and the results showed that carboCT binding is specific and that it is displac

Integrated beam shaping/collimating and customized polarizing edge-emitting lasers with single GaN metasurface.

Edge-emitting lasers (EELs) have been widely applied in many fields due to the advantages of high power, high efficiency and compactness. However, the propagation angles along the fast and slow axis and the polarization state of the laser in the far field are highly divergent, asymmetric and fixed due to the anisotropic structure of the quantum well. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a beam shaping/collimating and polarization manipulating metasurface (BS/C-PMM) integrated EEL. The phase for the beam shaping/collimating is asymmetrically designed with double foci corresponding to

Amylin Coexisting With Peptide YY (PYY) and Amylin/PYY Cells Correspond to Subpopulations of Glucagon- and Glucagon-Like Peptide-1-Immunoreactive Cells in the Japanese Eel (Anguilla japonica) Pancreas.

The distribution of amylin-like substances was investigated by immunohistochemistry in the pancreas of the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica). Amylin-immunoreactive cells were observed in pancreatic islets. These immunostaining profiles were not observed by the preabsorption of the anti-amylin serum with synthetic amylin, indicating that the serum specifically recognized eel amylin-like peptide. Almost all amylin-immunoreactive cells were immunopositive for peptide YY, suggesting that amylin and peptide YY co-secreted from the islet cells might participate in the modulation of insulin and glucag

Differential regulation of the expression of cytochrome P450 aromatase, estrogen and androgen receptor subtypes in the brain-pituitary-ovarian axis of the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) reveals steroid dependent and independent mechanisms.

This study aimed at investigating the role of sexual steroids in the regulation of the expression of the single aromatase gene and steroid receptor subtypes in the brain-pituitary-ovarian axis of the Japanese eel. Unlike other teleosts, which possess duplicated genes for aromatase, cyp19a1a and cyp19a1b, expressed in the gonads and in the brain, respectively, eel species possess a single cyp19a1. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that eel brain/gonadal cyp19a1 branches at the basis of both teleost gonadal cyp19a1a and brain cyp19a1b clades. Female eels treated with catfish pituitary homogenate (

Characterization of reference genes for qRT-PCR normalization in rice-field eel (Monopterus albus) to assess differences in embryonic developmental stages, the early development of immune organs, and cells infected with rhabdovirus.

Quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) has become a popular technique to assess gene expression. Suitable reference genes are normally identified first to ensure accurate normalization. The aim of the present study was to select the most stable genes in embryonic developmental stages, the early development of immune organs, and cells infected with Chinese rice-field eel rhabdovirus (CrERV) of the rice-field eel (Monopterus albus). Four reference genes, including those encoding 18S ribosomal RNA (18SrRNA), beta actin (β-actin), elongation factor 1 alpha
