Abnormalities in auditory efferent activities in children with selective mutism.

Two efferent feedback pathways to the auditory periphery may play a role in monitoring self-vocalization: the middle-ear acoustic reflex (MEAR) and the medial olivocochlear bundle (MOCB) reflex. Since most studies regarding the role of auditory efferent activity during self-vocalization were conducted in animals, human data are scarce. The working premise of the current study was that selective mutism (SM), a rare psychiatric disorder characterized by consistent failure to speak in specific social situations despite the ability to speak normally in other situations, may serve as a human model

The diversity and plasticity of descending motor pathways rewired after stroke and trauma in rodents.

Descending neural pathways to the spinal cord plays vital roles in motor control. They are often damaged by brain injuries such as stroke and trauma, which lead to severe motor impairments. Due to the limited capacity for regeneration of neural circuits in the adult central nervous system, currently no essential treatments are available for complete recovery. Notably, accumulating evidence shows that residual circuits of the descending pathways are dynamically reorganized after injury and contribute to motor recovery. Furthermore, recent technological advances in cell-type classification and m

Cortical resting motor threshold difference in asleep-awake craniotomy for motor eloquent gliomas: WHO grading influences motor pathway excitability.

Developing neurophysiological tools to predict WHO tumor grade can empower the treating teams for a better surgical decision-making process. A total of 38 patients with supratentorial diffuse gliomas underwent an asleep-awake-sedated craniotomies for tumor removal with intraoperative neuromonitoring. The resting motor threshold was calculated for different train stimulation paradigms during awake and asleep phases. Receiver operating characteristic analysis and Bayesian regression models were performed to analyze the prediction of tumor grading based on the resting motor threshold differences.

Mapping subcortical motor pathways in humans with startle-conditioned TMS.

Subcortical motor pathways, such as the reticulospinal tract, are critical for producing and modulating voluntary movements and have been implicated in neurological conditions. Previous research has described the presence of ipsilateral motor evoked potentials (iMEPs) in the arm to transcranial magentic stimulation (TMS), and suggested they could be mediated by the uncrossed corticospinal tract or by ipsilateral cortico-reticulospinal connections. Here, we sought to elucidate the role of the reticulospinal tract in mediating iMEPs by assessing their modulation by a startling acoustic stimulus

Anatomical basis of the coordination between smooth and striated urethral and anal sphincters: loops of regulation between inferior hypogastric plexus and pudendal nerve. Immuno-histological study with 3D reconstruction.

PURPOSE: (1) Describe both nervous pathways to the sphincters, and highlight the anatomical support of their coordination. (2) Obtain a 3D representation of this complex innervation system. METHODS: A computer-assisted anatomical dissection technique was used. Serial histological sections were cut in the pelvis of four female human foetuses (aged 19-32 weeks of gestation). The sections were treated with conventional staining, and with seven different immunostainings. The sections were digitalized and, finally, a 3D representation was built from the corresponding images. RESULTS: Myelinated a

Selective sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis: technique of robotic transthoracic selective postganglionic efferent sympathectomy.

Selective postganglionic efferent sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis is associated with excellent relief of hyperhidrosis and a low rate of compensatory hyperhidrosis. However, this technique can be difficult using conventional videoendoscopic techniques. We performed this technique using robotic technology in 55 patients. There was complete relief of hyperhidrosis in 53/55 (96%) patients, partial relief in 2/55 (4%) patients and a compensatory hyperhidrosis rate of 7%.

Is there a role for combined EMG-fMRI in exploring the pathophysiology of essential tremor and improving functional neurosurgery?

BACKGROUND: Functional MRI combined with electromyography (EMG-fMRI) is a new technique to investigate the functional association of movement to brain activations. Thalamic stereotactic surgery is effective in reducing tremor. However, while some patients have satisfying benefit, others have only partial or temporary relief. This could be due to suboptimal targeting in some cases. By identifying tremor-related areas, EMG-fMRI could provide more insight into the pathophysiology of tremor and be potentially useful in refining surgical targeting. OBJECTIVE: Aim of the study was to evaluate wheth

Neuropathic pain: an evolutionary hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Whereas nociceptive pain has a clear survival value, the evolutionary origins of neuropathic pain remains unexplained. OBJECTIVES: It is argued that neuropathic pain is an adaptation that has evolved to detect non-specific damage to the nervous system, and that it operates on the same principles of an analogous hypothesis that has been put forward to explain the evolutionary utility of motion sickness. Whereas motion sickness has been proposed to arise from an inappropriate activation of a system evolved to respond to incoherence between vestibular and visual reference frames as a

Fast and slow effects of medial olivocochlear efferent activity in humans.

BACKGROUND: The medial olivocochlear (MOC) pathway modulates basilar membrane motion and auditory nerve activity on both a fast (10-100 ms) and a slow (10-100 s) time scale in guinea pigs. The slow MOC modulation of cochlear activity is postulated to aide in protection against acoustic trauma. However in humans, the existence and functional roles of slow MOC effects remain unexplored. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: By employing contralateral noise at moderate to high levels (68 and 83 dB SPL) as an MOC reflex elicitor, and spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) as a non-invasive probe of

Abdominal vagal signalling: a novel role for cholecystokinin in circulatory control?

It is generally accepted that the gastrointestinal circulation is primarily under the control of the enteric nervous system. However, recent studies have demonstrated that the sympathetic nervous system may play a greater role in postprandial gastrointestinal circulatory function than was thought previously. Cholecystokinin (CCK) is a gastrointestinal hormone released from enteroendocrine cells lining the intestinal mucosa in response to feeding. Systemic administration of CCK induces gastrointestinal vasodilation mediated by withdrawal of sympathetic vasomotor drive. CCK differentially influe

Monitoring of motor pathways during brain stem surgery: what we have achieved and what we still miss?

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IOM) has established itself as one of the paths by which modern neurosurgery can improve surgical results while minimizing morbidity. IOM consists of both monitoring (continuous "on-line" assessment of the functional integrity of neural pathways) and mapping (functional identification and preservation of anatomically ambiguous nervous tissue) techniques. In posterior-fossa and brainstem surgery, mapping techniques can be used to identify - and therefore preserve - cranial nerves, their motor nuclei and corticospinal or corticobulbar pathways. Simil

Forebrain osmotic regulation of the sympathetic nervous system.

1. Accumulating evidence in both humans and animals indicates that acute increases in plasma osmolality elevate sympathetic nerve activity (SNA). In addition, plasma hyperosmolality (or hypernatraemia) can produce sustained increases in SNA and arterial blood pressure (ABP) through stimulation of forebrain osmoreceptors. 2. Although an abundance of information exists regarding the osmoregulatory circuits for thirst and secretion of antidiuretic hormone, much less is known about those pathways and synaptic mechanisms linking osmotic perturbations and SNA. To date, the available evidence suggest

The cytogenesis and radial migration of cranial nerve efferent neurons in the developing brain stem of the bovine.

The cytogenesis of motor neurons of the immature brain stem of the bovine has been examined by light-and electron microscopy from the periods of origin and migration of the motor neurons until their transformation into relatively mature neurons in their area of destination. Up to 2.7 cm CRL intensive cell migration occurs from the ventromedial cell column in a ventrolateral direction, leading to the formation of the definitive viscero-efferent nucleus of the facial nerve. Electron-optically these cells exhibit features of immature neurons which are extending leading processes in the direction

Organization of the output of the ventral striatopallidal system in the rat: ventral pallidal efferents.

The efferent projections of the ventral pallidum in the rat were studied using anterograde tracing of Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin and retrograde tracing of choleratoxin subunit B. The main aim of this study was to determine the degree of topographical organization in the outputs of the ventral pallidum. In the telencephalon, ventral pallidal fibers reach the prefrontal cortex, the ventral striatum, the lateral septum, the basolateral, lateral, and central amygdaloid nuclei, and the lateral entorhinal area. Diencephalic targets of ventral pallidal fibers are the lateral hypothalamus, the

[Effect of histamine on the action potential of the maxillary nerve in rabbits].

The significant enhancement of action potential as recorded from rabbit maxillary nerve with topically applied 1.0 mmol/L histamine on the nasal mucosa was completely blocked by pretreatment with diphenhydramine (H1 antagonist) but not with cimetidine (H2 antagonist). This fact gives new support to the concept that histamine exerts its pathological effect on nasal mucosa at least partly via an afferent nervous pathway of the trigeminal nerve.

Spinal cord location of the motoneurons innervating the abdominal, cutaneous maximus, latissimus dorsi and longissimus dorsi muscles in the cat.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injections were made in the rectus abdominis, obliquus externus, obliquus internus, transversus abdominis, cutaneous maximus, latissimus dorsi and the longissimus dorsi muscles in the cat. The results showed that motoneurons innervating the obliquus externus, obliquus internus and transversus abdominis muscles were located in greatly overlapping areas of midthoracic, caudal thoracic and upper lumbar spinal segments. These motoneuronal cell groups were present laterally in the ventral horn and at caudal thoracic and upper lumbar levels they bordered on the white mat

Effects of ocular blood flow changes on the efferent activity of cat ciliary nerves.

The efferent activity of the short ciliary nerves was studied in 23 anesthetized cats. Spontaneous activity was recorded in all preparations, and 33% showed a rhythmic discharge. Ipsilateral common carotid occlusion (ICCO) at constant intraocular and arterial pressures changed the discharge frequency in 14 of 33 filaments. Of these, 13 filaments showed a decrease in their firing frequency whereas in only one the discharge increased. Contralateral common carotid occlusion (CCCO), at constant intraocular pressure, changed the firing frequency in 8 of 20 filaments: 5 of them showed a decrease in

Neural regulation and manipulation of pancreatic β cells.

Pancreatic β cells are regulated by integrative neural signals beyond simple autonomic efferent control. Emerging evidence highlights the critical roles of afferent nerve signals and the gut-liver-brain-pancreas network in regulating β cells. Harnessing these intrinsic neural pathways may offer innovative therapeutic strategies for restoring β cell function and mass.

Calretinin and calbindin-D28k in rat brain: patterns of partial co-localization.

Calretinin and calbindin-D28k are homologous calcium-binding proteins, each present in a variety of neurons in the brain. Their distributions in the rat brain have been compared at the cellular level to determine whether they tend to occur in the same or in different cells, and to determine whether calbindin-positive cells show any common features once crossreaction with calretinin has been eliminated. The results show great heterogeneity. Most cells which contain one of the proteins do not contain the other, but many cells do contain both; even in the ventral cochlear nucleus, where there is

Role of C1 neurons in anti-inflammatory reflex: Mediation between afferents and efferents.

Neuroimmune communication, the connection between the autonomic regulatory pathway and immune cells, has been implicated in the regulation of immune function and inflammation. The role of afferents (vagal afferent and somatic sensory nerves) and efferents (autonomic nervous and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal systems) in the inflammatory reflex has been well studied; however, the central pathway remains unknown. C1 neurons include both catecholaminergic and glutamatergic neurons, which are located in the rostral ventrolateral medulla. C1 neurons project to the spinal cord, dorsal motor nucleus
