Ultrasound is increasingly used by radiologists and rheumatologists for the diagnosis and assessment of inflammatory arthritis in day-to-day clinical practice. It is ideally suited to demonstrating early changes of these conditions before they are evident using conventional radiography or indeed clinical examination. Ultrasound readily demonstrates synovitis, effusion, soft tissue changes, and some bone features (including erosion and enthesophyte formation) of inflammatory arthritis. It also provides a way to quantify disease activity. This article reviews the ultrasound imaging features of t

OBJECTIVE: Articular chondrocytes respond to chemical and mechanical signals depending on their zone of origin with respect to distance from the tissue surface. However, little is known of the zonal variations in cellular mechanical properties in cartilage. The goal of this study was to determine the zonal variations in the elastic and viscoelastic properties of porcine chondrocytes using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and to validate this method against micropipette aspiration.
METHODS: A theoretical solution for stress relaxation of a viscoelastic, incompressible, isotropic surface indented

BACKGROUND: Injurious mechanical loading of articular cartilage can be an initiating factor in the development of degenerative joint disease. The tissue response to compression depends on the loading conditions and matrix mechanical properties. The short-term loading history of cartilage can affect its water content and microstructural organization, and may thereby modify its susceptibility to injury. We therefore examined the role of prestrain on the response of articular cartilage to injurious compression.
METHODS: The full-thickness cartilage of bovine osteochondral explants was subjected

Ear cartilage from a typical case of relapsing polychondritis was examined with the electron microscope. A large number of dense granules and vesicles, which were compatible with matrix vesicles or lysosomes, surrounded the affected chondrocytes. In less severely damaged chondrocytes, these granules and vesicles appeared to be formed by pinching off of the cytoplasmic processes or by budding from the processes. Calcification of the granules was minimal. In severely damaged chondrocytes, an admixture of these granules and cytoplasmic organelles occurred. It is speculated that many of these dens

OBJECTIVE: In this study we aim to show that an optical fiber Bragg grating-based microindentation system, which has the potential to be deployed arthroscopically, can differentiate between healthy and degenerated articular cartilage, which represents an important challenge in minimally-invasive surgery.
DESIGN: Twenty bovine osteochondral cylinders, extracted from the patellar groove of ten 24 months old animals were subjected to stepwise in vitro stress-relaxation indentation measurements. The indentation procedure comprised 15 indentation steps of 20 μm each, reaching a total depth of 300

BACKGROUND: Despite it being known that subchondral bone affects the viscoelasticity of cartilage, there has been little research into the mechanical properties of osteochondral tissue as a whole system. This study aims to unearth new knowledge concerning the dynamic behaviour of human subchondral bone and how energy is transferred through the cartilage-bone interface.
METHODS: Dynamic mechanical analysis was used to determine the frequency-dependent (1-90 Hz) viscoelastic properties of the osteochondral unit (cartilage-bone system) as well as isolated cartilage and bone specimens extracted f

OBJECTIVE: To determine if subglottic development is at least partially under local control and to determine which tissue layer(s) is predominantly responsible.
DESIGN: The suglottises of 12 day-3 CD1 mice were grown in whole organ culture. The 12 subglottises were divided into 3 individual groups: +++, -++, and ---. Group+++ had all tissue layers of the subglottis intact: luminal epithelium, cricoid cartilage, inner and outer perichondrium. Group-++ had all layers intact with the exception of luminal epithelium. Group--- had all layers removed (luminal epithelium, inner and outer perichondri

The tracheal mucosa of the Syrian golden hamster has been extensively employed as a model system for respiratory tract cell renewal, injury, and carcinogenesis. However, baseline cell kinetic data are not available for normal juvenile and adolescent animals in which the mucosa and cartilage are rapidly enlarging. The objective of this research was to elucidate alterations in cell kinetics, epithelial morphology, and gene expression in the trachea of hamsters at different ages. Cell kinetics were examined by 3H-thymidine labeling indices, morphology by light and electron microscopic examination

Upper esophageal sphincter (UES) refers to the high-pressure zone located in between the pharynx and the cervical esophagus. The physiological role of this sphincter is to protect against reflux of food into the airways as well as prevent entry of air into the digestive tract. UES is a musculocartilaginous structure with its anterior wall being formed by the full extent of the posterior surface of the cricoid cartilage and arytenoid and interarytenoid muscles in the upper part. Posteriorly and laterally the cricopharyngeus (CP) muscle is a definitive component of the UES. CP has many unique ch

The research described herein is concerned with the development of a "restricted" three-dimensional finite element model of the femoral head that permits the mechanical behavior of the hip joint in Legg-Perthes' disease to be simulated and studied. This "restricted" finite element model allows the femoral head to be treated as a non-axisymmetrically loaded axisymmetric solid of revolution. In order to minimize computer costs, and in recognition of the several uncertainties present in the mechanical description of the system, a number of simplifying assumptions are introduced. These assumptions

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare multisystem disorder of uncertain etiology. It is characterized by recurrent and progressive destruction of both elastic and hyaline cartilages as well as connective tissue. Respiratory tract involvement is associated with high mortality and morbidity. General anesthesia may be required in these patients for tracheostomy, bronchoscopy, nasal reconstruction, aortic valve replacement, and recent tracheobronchial stenting which they usually sustain. Tracheostomy was once the most likely surgical procedure in relapsing polychondritis. However, this procedure is o

The treatment of osteochondral defects remains one of the most significant challenges in regenerative medicine due to the limited self-repair capacity of articular cartilage. This study proposes a multidisciplinary approach through the design and fabrication of an innovative biphasic scaffold (BS) that integrates a porous commercially pure titanium (c.p. Ti) substrate with a sustainable chitosan-bacterial cellulose (CS-BC) biocomposite. The metallic phase, produced via the space-holder technique with 60 vol% porosity, was engineered to replace damaged subchondral bone, while the biopolymeric p

INTRODUCTION: The intricate process of articular cartilage remodeling, pivotal for both physiological functions and osteoarthritis (OA) progression, is orchestrated through a balance of matrix synthesis and breakdown, which is mediated by matrix metalloproteinase enzymes (MMPs). At the heart of this remodeling lies the pericellular matrix (PCM), a specialized microenvironment encapsulating each chondrocyte and composed mainly of collagen type VI and perlecan. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of MMP-2, -3, and -7 on the structural integrity and biomechanical attributes of the PCM.

From a surgical point of view, quantification cannot always be achieved in the developmental deformity in hip joints, but finite element analysis can be a helpful tool to compare normal joint architecture with a dysplastic counterpart. CT scans from the normal right hip of an 8-year-old boy and the dysplastic left hip of a 12-year-old girl were used to construct our geometric models. In a three-dimensional model construction, distinctions were made between the cortical bone, trabecular bone, cartilage, and contact nonlinearities of the hip joint. The mathematical model incorporated the conside

A main problem with bioprosthesis used for surgical correction of congenital cardiac malformation is its tendency to shrink and to calcify. Recently, a new material, that is, decellularized bovine pericardium (CardioCel), was introduced in clinics. It was proposed that this new patch material should not calcify and should be particularly suitable for the correction of vascular defects in inborn cardiac diseases. The aim of our chronic minipig study was to evaluate the performance of CardioCel patches implanted in aortic and pulmonary artery position, respectively. Ten minipigs aged 3 months we

BACKGROUND: The ear is composed of elastic cartilage as its framework, and is covered with a thin layer of skin. Auricular reconstruction using autogenous cartilage in microtia patients requires delicacy. This paper reports clinical experiences related to elevation of reconstructed ear in the last 11 years.
METHODS: This study was based on 68 congenital microtia patients who underwent auricular elevation in our hospital. Among these 68 patients, 47 patients were recruited. We compared the differences in the ear size, auriculocephalic angle, and conchal depth with those in the opposite ear, an

Thirty-eight cases of congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lung are described, and a classification based on clinical, gross, and microscopic criteria is proposed. The type I lesion is composed of single or multiple large cysts (more than 2 cm. in diameter), frequently producing mediastinal herniation. The cysts are lined by ciliated psuedostratified columnar epithelium. The walls of the cysts contain prominent smooth muscle and elastic tissue. Mucus producing cells are present in approximatley one-third of the cases, and cartilage in the wall is rarely seen. Relatively normal alv

The epiglottis is a leaf-shaped elastic cartilage structure that guides air into the larynx and prevents food entry into the respiratory tract. Unlike other laryngeal cartilages, it rarely calcifies. Epiglottic calcification is poorly understood, with most data from case reports or postmortem studies, and its prevalence in living individuals remains unclear. This study aims to assess epiglottic calcification on neck computed tomography (CT) and explore associations with age, sex, and medical history. This retrospective observational study evaluated 203 high-resolution neck CT scans from adult

Swimming kinematics and macroscale mechanical testing have shown that the vertebral column of sharks acts as a biological spring, storing and releasing energy during locomotion. Using synchrotron X-ray nanotomography and deep-learning image segmentation, we studied the ultrastructure and deformation mechanism of mineralized shark vertebrae from Carcharhinus limbatus (Blacktip shark). The vertebral centrum con regions: the corpus calcareum, a hypermineralized double cone, and the intermediale, blocks of mineralized cartilage interspersed by unmineralized arches. At the micron scale, mineralized
