Luminescent energy transfer between cadmium telluride nanoparticle and lanthanide(III) chelate in competitive bioaffinity assays of biotin and estradiol.

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer has been studied between lanthanide(III) chelates as donors and protein-coupled CdTe semiconductor nanoparticles as acceptors. Wide excitation spectra and large Stokes shift of semiconductor nanoparticles and timeresolved fluorescence detection were shown to provide a combination for successful energy transfer assay. Different intrinsically fluorescent europium(III) and terbium(III) chelates coupled to single biotin molecules were studied for optimal energy transfer with streptavidin labeled semiconductor nanoparticles. No significant differences between

Turn-On Near-Infrared Lateral Flow Immunoassay with Synergistic Energy Transfer for Direct and Ultrasensitive Detection in Complex Matrices.

The rapid, sensitive, and quantitative detection of small-molecule analytes in complex matrices remains fundamentally constrained by severe optical interference and limited signal transduction efficiency. Herein, we report a turn-on near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence lateral flow immunoassay (NFLFIA) that integrates indocyanine green-embedded nanoparticles and horseradish peroxidase-loaded gold nanorods as a spectrally matched donor-acceptor pair. Benefiting from the intrinsically low optical background of the NIR window and a cascade quenching mechanism governed by synergistic inner-filter effe

Using fibre photometry with a fluorescence resonance energy transfer-based biosensor to test efficacy of calpain inhibitors in vivo.

Calcium-activated proteases, known as calpains, cleave proteins into smaller protein fragments, altering protein structure and function. Calpain overactivity is a pathological hallmark of many human diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, which are characterized by excessive proteolytic cleavage and formation of protein aggregates. Current methods for determining calpain activity, such as examination of the presence or absence of calpain substrates in post-mortem tissue, are low-throughput, costly and retrospective, hampering the search for potentially therapeutically efficacious calpa

Additivity of Transfer Free Energies Enables the Description of Complex Protein Formulations in Implicit Solvent Molecular Dynamics Simulations.

A complex 3D structure and the surrounding environment determine the function and stability of a protein. Various osmolytes can be added to a protein drug formulation to stabilize the native protein structure by preventing unfolding and aggregation. In this context, the concept of transfer free energy, which represents the change in chemical potential of a protein being transferred from water to an osmolyte solution, has emerged as a powerful tool to elucidate the energetics involved in the protein-osmolyte interaction. In the present work, we experimentally determine the transfer free energie

Investigation of Intermetallic Energy Transfers in Lanthanide Coordination Polymers Molecular Alloys: Case Study of Trimesate-Based Compounds.

Reactions in water at ambient temperature and pressure between a lanthanide ion and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (or trimesate) lead to two series of iso-structural coordination polymers. Their general chemical formula is [Ln(tma)(H2O)6]∞ for the lightest lanthanide ions (Ln = La-Dy except Pm), while it is [Ln(tma)(H2O)5·3.5H2O]∞ for the heaviest ones (Ho-Lu plus Y). For the heaviest lanthanide ions, reactions at 50 °C lead to a third structural family with the general chemical formula [Ln(tma)(H2O)3·1.5H2O]∞ with Ln = Ho-Lu plus Y. Homo-lanthanide coordination polymers that belong to the latt

Encapsulation of anticancer drug curcumin and co-loading with photosensitizer hypericin into lipoproteins investigated by fluorescence resonance energy transfer.

Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) are natural occurring vehicles attractive for drug delivery and targeting tumor cells. Here we have investigated the encapsulation and interaction of a well-known anticancer agent curcumin with LDL and HDL. LDL particles have been found to accumulate more curcumin molecules inside their structure than HDL. The chemical stability of curcumin is enhanced and its photo-physical properties are altered due to encapsulation inside both lipoproteins. Combining photodynamic therapy with chemotherapy can improve anticancer treatment by

Reevaluating the effects of reorganization energy on electron transfer rate for quantum dot-molecular acceptor complexes in different solvents.

The electron transfer (ET) rate in quantum dot (QD)-molecular acceptor systems is dependent upon system reorganization energy (RE, λ), which comprises contributions from solvent (λ0) and reactants (λi). However, to date, the effect of λi on ET rate has been largely ignored. Herein, the ET from CdSe/ZnS QDs to 1-chloroanthraquinone (1-CAQ) in different solvents was investigated using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy as a means to evaluate the effect of λi on ET rate. The results revealed that ET rate is strongly solvent dependent. Amazingly, the ET rate in carbon disulfide is 300-tim

CSSTag: Optical Nanoscale Radar and Particle Tracking for In-Body and Microfluidic Systems With Vibrating Graphene and Resonance Energy Transfer.

Biological particle tracking systems monitor cellular processes or particle behaviors with the great accuracy. The emissions of fluorescent molecules or direct images of particles are captured with cameras or photodetectors. The current imaging systems have challenges in detection, collection, and analysis of imaging data, penetration depth, and complicated set-ups. In this paper, a signaling-based nanoscale acousto-optic radar and microfluidic multiple particle tracking (MPT) system is proposed based on the theoretical design providing nanoscale optical modulator with vibrating Förster resona

Ion association in aqueous solutions probed through vibrational energy transfers among cation, anion, and water molecules.

KSCN and NH4SCN aqueous solutions were investigated with intermolecular vibrational energy transfer methods. In a KSCN/H2O (1/10 molar ratio) solution, 90% of the initial excitation of the CN stretch (~2066 cm(-1)) of the SCN(-) anion is transferred to the HOH bending mode (~1636 cm(-1)) of water molecules with an energy transfer time constant 3.1 ps. In a NH4SCN/H2O (1/10 molar ratio) solution, only 49% of the CN excitation flows to the water HOH bending mode with a time constant 6.3 ps. Most of the remaining CN excitation goes to the NH bending mode (~1460 cm(-1)) of the NH(+) cation with a

Probe the Electron Spin Polarization of the Otherwise Unobservable 3MLCT Triplet State Through Polarization Transfer Accompanying the Intramolecular Triplet-Triplet Energy Transfer in Pt(II)-Salen Schiff Base Complexes.

The non-Boltzmann population of the triplet sublevels in Pt(II)-Schiff base complexes, and other phosphorescent transition metal complexes, exhibits large zero-field splitting (ZFS, ∼25 cm-1), preventing a time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) study. To investigate the intersystem crossing (ISC) electron spin selectivity of the Pt(II) complexes, we attached a perylene unit as a triplet energy acceptor. Our method relies on the conservation of spin angular momentum during the ultrafast intramolecular triplet-triplet energy transfer (TTET) from the metal-to-ligand charge transfer

Unravelling the interfacial secondary electron transfer mechanism in HfO2@TiO2 core-shell nanostructures for boosted X-ray energy conversion.

The performance of X-ray radiocatalysis is fundamentally limited by the mismatch between high X-ray absorption and efficient charge utilization. Herein, we report an elaborate design of constructing HfO2@TiO2 core-shell heterostructures that synergistically integrates X-ray energy harvesting and catalytic amplification for enhanced X-ray radiocatalysis. Monte Carlo simulations map the three-dimensional energy deposition profile and display a critical TiO2 shell thickness of over 10 nm that maximizes the potential of electron-hole pair excitation by HfO2-derived secondary electrons inside the T

Interfacial electronic coupling in copper 4-cyanophenylacetylide/copper phenylacetylide regulates molecular oxygen activation through coupled electron and energy transfer.

Interfacial regulation of molecular oxygen activation is critical for controlling reactive oxygen species generation in photocatalytic systems. Here, a copper 4-cyanophenylacetylide/copper phenylacetylide heterointerface (CN-PhC2Cu/PhC2Cu) was constructed through a one-step in situ strategy to regulate interfacial charge transfer and excited-state processes. Cyano functionalization created an electronic difference between the two copper acetylide components, while their related CCCu coordination frameworks favored intimate interfacial coupling. The optimized 75CNPC removed 95.2 ± 3.9% of diclo

Harvesting Bright Green Photoluminescence of Tb2(BDC)3(H2O)4 MOF via Pressure-Modulated Ligand-to-Metal Energy Transfer.

Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) exhibit distinctive emission spectra and prolonged luminescent lifetimes, thereby offering a unique platform for the advancement of solid-state photoluminescence (PL) materials. However, the mismatch between the energy levels of metal ions and organic ligands leads to a weak PL emission. Herein, this study presents a pressure-treated strategy aimed at achieving efficient green PL in Tb2(BDC)3(H2O)4 MOF. Compared to the initial intensity, the PL intensity is enhanced eightfold below 3.1 GPa. Intriguingly, the PL intensity of pressure-treated sample

Imaging the Collision Energy-Dependent Charge-Transfer Dynamics between the Spin-Orbit Ground Ar+(2P3/2) Ion and CO.

The collisional charge-transfer reaction between Ar+(2P3/2,1/2) and CO represents one of the most studied ion-molecule systems; many controversies persist among different studies, and the detailed quantum state-to-state charge-transfer dynamics remains unknown. Here, differential cross sections of the charge-transfer process between the spin-orbit ground Ar+(2P3/2) ion and CO are reported at three center-of-mass collision energies of 1.02, 0.72, and 0.40 eV using a home-built three-dimensional velocity-map imaging-based ion-molecule crossed beam setup. At all three collision energies, the dire

Long Excited-State Lifetimes in Three-Coordinate Copper(I) Complexes via Triplet-Triplet Energy Transfer to Pyrene-Decorated Isocyanides.

There has been much effort to improve excited-state lifetimes in photosensitizers based on earth-abundant first-row transition metals. Copper(I) complexes have gained significant attention in this field, and in most cases, sterically driven approaches are used to optimize their lifetimes. This study presents a series of three-coordinate copper(I) complexes (Cu1-Cu3) where the excited-state lifetime is extended by triplet-triplet energy transfer. The heteroleptic compounds feature a cyclohexyl-substituted β-diketiminate (CyNacNacMe) paired with aryl isocyanide ligands, giving the general formul

Characterization of the inner membrane cytochrome ImcH from Geobacter reveals its importance for extracellular electron transfer and energy conservation.

Electroactive bacteria combine the oxidation of carbon substrates with an extracellular electron transfer (EET) process that discharges electrons to an electron acceptor outside the cell. This process involves electron transfer through consecutive redox proteins that efficiently connect the inner membrane to the cell exterior. In this study, we isolated and characterized the quinone-interacting membrane cytochrome c ImcH from Geobacter sulfurreducens, which is involved in the EET process to high redox potential acceptors. Spectroscopic and electrochemical studies show that ImcH hemes have low

Cu-Enhanced Efficient Förster Resonance Energy Transfer in PBSA Sunscreen-Associated Ternary Cu x Cd1-x S Quantum Dots.

Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconducting nanocrystals that exhibit size- and composition-dependent optical and electronic properties. Recently, Cu-based II-VI ternary Cu x Cd1-x S (CCS) QDs have emerged as a promising class of QDs as compared to their binary counterparts (CuS and CdS). Herein, a series of ternary CCS QDs are synthesized by changing the molar concentration of Cu2+ ions only keeping the 1:1 ratio of the stoichiometric mixture of Cd2+ and S2-. These CCS QDs are attached to 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA), an eminent UV-B filter widely used in many commercial sunscreen p

RNF8 promotes high linear energy transfer carbon-ion-induced DNA double-stranded break repair in serum-starved human cells.

The cell-killing effect of radiotherapy largely depends on unrepaired DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs) or lethal chromosome aberrations induced by DSBs. Thus, the capability of DSB repair is critically important for the cancer-cell-killing effect of ionizing radiation. Here, we investigated the involvement of the DNA damage signaling factors ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM), ring finger protein 8 (RNF8), and RNF168 in quiescent G0/G1 cells, which are expressed in the majority of cell populations in tumors, after high linear energy transfer (LET) carbon-ion irradiation. Interestingly, ATM i

Bioluminescence Imaging of Inflammation in Vivo Based on Bioluminescence and Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer Using Nanobubble Ultrasound Contrast Agent.

Inflammation is an immunological response involved in various inflammatory disorders ranging from neurodegenerative diseases to cancers. Luminol has been reported to detect myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in an inflamed area through a light-emitting reaction. However, this method is limited by low tissue penetration and poor spatial resolution. Here, we fabricated a nanobubble (NB) doped with two tandem lipophilic dyes, red-shifting luminol-emitted blue light to near-infrared region through a process integrating bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) and fluorescence resonance energy
