A vibrotactile p300-based brain-computer interface for consciousness detection and communication.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) has been used for many years for communication in severely disabled patients. BCI based on electrophysiological signals has enabled communication, using auditory or visual stimuli to elicit event-related potentials (ERPs). The aim of this study was to determine whether patients with locked-in syndrome (LIS) could elicit a P300 wave, using a vibrotactile oddball paradigm for establishing somatosensory BCI-based communication. Six chronic LIS patients performed 2 electroencephalography (EEG)-based vibrotactile P300 oddball tasks. After a simple mental counting task

Influence of comorbid obsessive-compulsive symptoms on brain event-related potentials in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Approximately 30 to 50% of people suffering from Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (GTS) also fulfill diagnostic criteria for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Despite this high degree of comorbidity, very few studies have addressed the question of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) in GTS patients using specific brain event-related potentials (ERP) responses. The aim of the current study was to quantify neurocognitive aspects of comorbidity, using ERPs. Fourteen adults with GTS (without OCD) were compared to a group of 12 participants with GTS and comorbid obsessive-compulsive symptoms (GTS+

Inter-trial variability in brain activity as an indicator of synergistic effects of HIV-1 and drug abuse.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this investigation was to detect evidence of the synergism in the effects of HIV-1 and drug abuse on brain function that has been hypothesized but rarely shown. The investigation incorporated several noteworthy improvements in the approach. It used urine toxicology tests to exclude participants complicated by recent methadone use and illicit drug use. Also, it defined drug abuse on a scale that considered symptom severity. Most importantly, it examined inter-trial variability in brain activity as a potentially more sensitive indicator of group differences and funct

Psychophysiological correlates of interpersonal cooperation and aggression.

Mimicking real world situations, the Chicken Game allows scientists to examine human decision-making when the outcome is not entirely within one person's control. In this social dilemma task, two players independently choose either to safely cooperate with, or riskily aggress against, the other player, and the unique combination of their choices specifies the outcome for each. Coupling the Chicken Game with psychophysiological measures, we confirmed our two hypotheses: that an individual perceives an outcome as most negative when she chooses to cooperate and the other player violates that trus

Empathic responses to others' gains and losses: an electrophysiological investigation.

A growing number of studies in exploring empathic modulation have revealed the neural substrates of how social stimuli are represented in the human brain, especially the pain of others. The empathic response of observing other's gains and losses, however, remains not clearly characterized. In the current study, we carried out two experiments with a gamble task to investigate how the effects of interpersonal familiarity and self-participation work on modulating the temporal neural response towards gain and loss of a friend or a stranger using scalp-recorded event-related potentials (ERPs). Deficits in loss-related feedback processing and risky decision-making among heterosexual males at risk for problematic pornography use.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problematic pornography use (PPU) has been associated with impaired risk-based decision-making, possibly stemming from disrupted feedback processing. However, the underlying cognitive and neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined behavioral risk-taking and feedback-related electrophysiological responses in individuals at risk for PPU. METHODS: Thirty-five male university students at risk for PPU (M = 20.51, SD = 0.89) and thirty-four matched controls (M = 20.79, SD = 1.70) completed the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) while EEG data were recorded. Exploring neural markers of incentive salience and real-world drinking among individuals with alcohol use disorder.

Alcohol cue salience is theorized to play a mechanistic role in alcohol use disorder (AUD), yet links between neural cue reactivity and naturalistic drinking remain undercharacterized. This study combined laboratory event-related potential (ERP) measures with two weeks of ambulatory assessment to evaluate whether alcohol-cue P3b relates to real-world drinking and individual differences in AUD severity. Heavy drinking participants (52 % Female; Ages 21-32) were recruited from the local community. Participants completed two weeks of ecological momentary assessment with continuous transdermal alc

Blunted P300 Prospectively Bridges Cognitive Reappraisal and Depressive Symptoms.

Cognitive reappraisal is a crucial modulator of depression. Scant research has examined how the usage of cognitive reappraisal is prospectively linked with depressive symptoms through its modulation effect on P300. Moreover, there is limited knowledge about how the social-environmental context, such as stressful societal disruption, could moderate this prospective process. Adopting a 6-month longitudinal design that recorded both behavioral and electroencephalogram data among 55 young adults (61.8% female) during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study examined the prospective associations from part

Factors influencing the occurrence and characteristics of white matter hyperintensities on the brain imaging of migraine patients.

BACKGROUND: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) increase the burden of migraine on the patients' lives and leading to migraine-related poor outcomes, so we aim to evaluate the association of different neurophysiological, psychological, and clinical factors with the presence and characteristics of WMHs on the brain imaging of migraine patients. METHODS: Our study included 300 migraine patients who underwent clinical, psychological, and neurophysiological assessment, including P300, which represented an event-related potential (ERP) component elicited in the decision-making process. The goal w

Single-paradigm and hybrid brain computing interfaces and their use by disabled patients.

Brain computer interfacing (BCI) has enjoyed increasing interest not only from research communities such as engineering and neuroscience but also from visionaries that predict it will change the way we will interact with technology. Since BCIs establish an alternative communication channel between the brain and the outside world, they have been hailed to provide solutions for patients suffering from severe motor- and/or communication disabilities such as fully paralyzed locked-in syndrome patients. However, despite single-case successes, which sometimes reach a broad audience, BCIs are actuall

Nicotine deprivation influences P300 markers of cognitive control.

Studies suggest that reduced cognitive control due to nicotine withdrawal may have a critical role in promoting tobacco use. The P3 family of event-related brain potential (ERP) components is thought to serve as markers of cognitive control processes. Unfortunately, existing research that examines the effects of nicotine deprivation on P3 amplitude has been marred by small sample sizes and other design limitations. The present study sought to determine the effects of nicotine deprivation on P3b and P3a amplitudes, which index task relevant target detection and orienting responses to novelty, r

Association between waking electroencephalography and cognitive event-related potentials in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

OBJECTIVE: Sleepiness, cognitive deficits, abnormal event-related potentials (ERP), and slowing of the waking electroencephalography (EEG) activity have been reported in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Our study aimed at evaluating if an association exists between the severity of ERP abnormalities and EEG slowing to better understand cerebral dysfunctions in OSA. METHODS: Twelve OSA patients and 12 age-matched controls underwent an overnight polysomnographic recording, an EEG recording of 10 min of wakefulness, and an auditory ERP protocol known to specifically recruit attention.

Performance of a tactile P300 speller for healthy people and severely disabled patients.

P300 based Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) for communication are well known since many years. Most of them use visual stimuli to elicit evoked potentials because it is easy to integrate a high number of different classes into the paradigm. Nevertheless, a BCI that depends on visual stimuli is sometimes not feasible due to the presence of visual impairment in patients with severe brain injuries. In this case, it could be possible to use auditory or somatosensory stimulation. In this publication a vibrotactile P300 based BCI is introduced. Two different approaches were tested: a first approach
