Supervised exercise therapy for patients with peripheral artery disease: Clinical update and pathways forward.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is an atherosclerotic vascular disease resulting in pervasive morbidity and mortality, particularly among older adults. One first-line therapy to improve symptoms, function, and clinical outcomes in PAD is supervised exercise therapy (SET), which is based primarily on a structured, start-and-stop walking protocol and is often implemented in cardiac rehabilitation programs. SET is supported by a Class IA guideline for patients with symptomatic PAD; however, despite the effectiveness of SET and the 2017 CMS decision to cover SET for PAD, challenges of awareness, a

Testosterone therapy induces molecular programming augmenting physiological adaptations to resistance exercise in older men.

BACKGROUND: The andropause is associated with declines in serum testosterone (T), loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia), and frailty. Two major interventions purported to offset sarcopenia are anabolic steroid therapies and resistance exercise training (RET). Nonetheless, the efficacy and physiological and molecular impacts of T therapy adjuvant to short-term RET remain poorly defined. METHODS: Eighteen non-hypogonadal healthy older men, 65-75 years, were assigned in a random double-blinded fashion to receive, biweekly, either placebo (P, saline, n = 9) or T (Sustanon 250 mg, n = 9) injections ove

Is exercise training safe and beneficial in patients receiving left ventricular assist device therapy?

Because a limited number of patients receive heart transplantation, alternative therapies, such as left ventricular assist device (LVAD) therapy, have emerged. Published studies have shown that LVAD implantation, by itself, improves exercise tolerance to the point where it is comparable to those with mild heart failure. The improvement in exercise capacity is maximally achieved 12 weeks after LVAD therapy and can continue even after explantation of the device. This effect varies, depending on the type of LVAD and exercise training. The available data in the literature on safety and benefits of

Factors associated with progression of symptomatic isolated supraspinatus tears 2 years after exercise therapy.

BACKGROUND: Although exercise therapy is an effective treatment for individuals with symptomatic rotator cuff tendon tears, tear size can increase. Understanding factors associated with tear progression will provide information that may be used to develop treatment plans and/or monitor tear size progression. Therefore, this study aims to identify factors associated with tear progression in persons with an isolated symptomatic supraspinatus tendon tear that underwent 12 weeks of personalized exercise therapy. METHODS: Individuals with a symptomatic isolated supraspinatus tendon tear that was a

Effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on EEG and sEMG signals after low-load exercise.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on acute exercise-induced fatigue via electroencephalogram (EEG) signal and surface electromyography (sEMG) signal, with the aim of providing a theoretical basis and methodological reference for promoting fatigue recovery. We hypothesized that HBOT for 60 min and natural recovery would reverse the changes in the indicators related to blood flow restriction (BFR) intervention, with HBOT demonstrating a superior restorative effect. METHODS: College students (n = 34) majoring in physical education were randomly assigned to an
