The Impact of a Dairy Milk Recovery Beverage on Bacterially Stimulated Neutrophil Function and Gastrointestinal Tolerance in Response to Hypohydration Inducing Exercise Stress.

The study aimed to determine the impact of a dairy milk recovery beverage immediately after endurance exercise on leukocyte trafficking, neutrophil function, and gastrointestinal tolerance markers during recovery. Male runners (N = 11) completed two feeding trials in randomized order, after 2 hr of running at 70% V˙O2max, fluid restricted, in temperate conditions (25 °C, 43% relative humidity). Immediately postexercise, the participants received a chocolate-flavored dairy milk beverage equating to 1.2 g/kg body mass carbohydrate and 0.4 g/kg body mass protein in one trial, and water volume equ

Diaphragmatic ultrasound findings correlate with dyspnea, exercise tolerance, health-related quality of life and lung function in patients with fibrotic interstitial lung disease.

BACKGROUND: Fibrotic interstitial lung disease (FILD) patients are typically dyspneic and exercise-intolerant with consequent impairment of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Respiratory muscle dysfunction is among the underlying mechanisms of dyspnea and exercise intolerance in FILD but may be difficult to diagnose. Using ultrasound, we compared diaphragmatic mobility and thickening in FILD cases and healthy controls and correlated these findings with dyspnea, exercise tolerance, HRQoL and lung function. METHODS: We measured diaphragmatic mobility and thickness during quiet (QB) and dee

High-frequency QRS analysis compared to conventional ST-segment analysis in patients with chest pain and normal ECG referred for exercise tolerance test.

BACKGROUND: The novel analysis of high-frequency QRS components (HFQRS-analysis) has been proposed in patients with chest pain (CP) and normal electrocardiography (ECG) referred for exercise tolerance test (ex-ECG). The aim of the study was to compare the diagnostic value of ex-ECG with ex-HFQRS-analysis. METHODS: Patients with CP and normal ECG, troponin, and echocardiography were considered. All patients underwent ex-ECG for conventional ST-segment-analysis and ex-HFQRS-analysis. A decrease ≥ 50% of the HFQRS signal intensity recorded in at least 2 contiguous leads was considered an index o

Effect of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Mode on Lung Function, Exercise Tolerance, Vital Signs, and Dyspnea After Acute SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

Background/Objectives: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic was associated with an intense impact on health worldwide. Among the sequelae, it became necessary to clarify respiratory impairment related to lung function and aerobic capacity, as well as the treatment of curative and preventive measures of pulmonary involvement. In this context, this study aimed to compare vital signs, the sensation of dyspnea (Borg scale), lung function, and exercise tolerance before and after the use of non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) in adults of both sexes after acute infection with severe acu

Heartbeat tracking task performance, an indicator of interoceptive accuracy, is associated with improvement of exercise tolerance in patients undergoing home-based cardiac rehabilitation.

AIMS: Interoception is the sensing function of physiological conditions and is crucial in self-regulation and decision-making. We examined the association of heartbeat tracking task performance, an indicator of interoceptive accuracy, with the degree of improvement in exercise tolerance in patients undergoing home-based cardiac rehabilitation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Participants underwent baseline peak oxygen uptake (VO2) measurements and a heartbeat tracking task. The heartbeat tracking task score varies between 0 and 1, with higher scores indicating a better heartbeat perception. After 6 mont

Iron Depletion in Systemic and Muscle Compartments Defines a Specific Phenotype of Severe COPD in Female and Male Patients: Implications in Exercise Tolerance.

We hypothesized that iron content and regulatory factors, which may be involved in exercise tolerance, are differentially expressed in systemic and muscle compartments in iron deficient severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. In the vastus lateralis and blood of severe COPD patients with/without iron depletion, iron content and regulators, exercise capacity, and muscle function were evaluated in 40 severe COPD patients: non-iron deficiency (NID) and iron deficiency (ID) (20 patients/group). In ID compared to NID patients, exercise capacity, muscle iron and ferritin conten

Correlation Between the 6-Min Walk Test and Exercise Tolerance Test in Cardiac Rehabilitation After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: A Cross-sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Exercise capacity and quality of life are the main outcomes in cardiac rehabilitation (CR). Exercise capacity is one of the important prognostic and diagnostic measures acquired by the exercise tolerance test (ETT). The 6-min walk test (6MWT), as a functional walking test, is another tool for assessing exercise capacity. METHODS: Eighty postoperative coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) participants admitted to three CR units were recruited for this cross-sectional and multicenter study, based on convenient non-probability sampling. All participants performed an ETT and two re

Outcome of Chair Aerobics & Pranayama on Anxiety and Exercise Tolerance in Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Patients: Study Protocol of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVES: The current Indian scenario follows the western cardiac rehabilitation protocol; hence the primary aim of the study is to develop a cardiac rehabilitation phase 1 protocol for the Indian scenario. The protocol will be used in the study as standard rehabilitation protocol for the intervention groups. The literature suggests the use of Pranayama and chair aerobics to improve the anxiety in CABG patients. This study also aims to provide the answer for the effect of Pranayama and chair aerobics on anxiety and exercise tolerance in CABG patients. And also try to find out which among the

Reduced exercise tolerance in mild chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: The contribution of combined abnormalities of diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide and ventilatory efficiency.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The combination of both reduced resting diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO ) and ventilatory efficiency (increased ventilatory requirement for CO2 clearance [V˙E /V˙CO2 ]) has been linked to exertional dyspnoea and exercise intolerance in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. The current study examined if low resting DLCO and higher exercise ventilatory requirements were associated with earlier critical dynamic mechanical constraints, dyspnoea and exercise limitation in patients with mil

Cardiac vagal dysfunction and myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery: a planned secondary analysis of the measurement of Exercise Tolerance before surgery study.

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of perioperative myocardial injury is poorly understood and not clearly linked to pre-existing cardiovascular disease. We hypothesised that loss of cardioprotective vagal tone [defined by impaired heart rate recovery ≤12 beats min-1 (HRR ≤12) 1 min after cessation of preoperative cardiopulmonary exercise testing] was associated with perioperative myocardial injury. METHODS: We conducted a pre-defined, secondary analysis of a multi-centre prospective cohort study of preoperative cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Participants were aged ≥40 yr undergoing non-cardiac sur

Maximal oxygen uptake and exercise tolerance are improved in rats with heart failure subjected to low-level laser therapy associated with resistance training.

Exercise tolerance and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) are reduced in heart failure (HF). The influence of combined resistance training (RT) and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on exercise tolerance and VO2max in HF has not yet been explored. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of combined RT and LLLT on VO2max and exercise tolerance in rats with HF induced by myocardial infarction (MI). Rats were allocated to sedentary sham (Sed-Sham, n = 12), sedentary heart failure (Sed-HF, n = 9), RT heart failure (RT-HF, n = 7) and RT associated with LLLT heart failure (RT + LLLT-HF, n = 7)

Safety and tolerability of regadenoson in 514 SPECT MPI patients with and without coronary artery disease and submaximal exercise heart rate response.

PURPOSE: The safety of regadenoson (Reg) during low-level exercise testing has been established. However, its administration at peak exercise for patients who do not reach target heart rate (THR) on standard exercise treadmill stress testing (ETT) needs to be established, particularly among patients with known coronary artery disease (CAD) METHODS: From our stress myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) database, we identified all patients between 2009 and 2012 who underwent standard ETT and received Reg at peak exercise for failure to reach THR. Hemodynamics, side effects, and adverse events were

[Effect of physical training with reference to anaerobic threshold on the indicators of exercise tolerance and restoration of work capacity in patients after myocardial infarction].

In patients who had sustained myocardial infarction including that of complicated history, the anaerobic threshold was defined to choose the optimum intensity of physical training. The latter were also examined for effects on exercise tolerance. It was ascertained that measuring physical exercise by heart rate at the level of the anaerobic threshold made it possible to choose the optimal conditions for the aerobic supply of metabolic demands during physical training. Applying physical training under aerobic conditions greatly increases exercise tolerance, prevents recurrent myocardial infarcti

Impact of cardiac rehabilitation exercise management on improving exercise tolerance among patients with chronic heart disease using a telemetry-based biosignal measurement device: protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial in Japan (iCARE-MATE study).

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) improves the outcomes of patients with chronic heart disease. However, participation in hospital-based programs is limited, partly because of accessibility issues. Notably, most CRs are performed unsupervised at home, making it challenging for healthcare providers and patients to monitor progress accurately or provide tailored feedback. Wearable devices are increasingly used to track physical activity; however, many require smartphone operations, which can be difficult for older adults. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether a simple telemetr
