Personality traits and childhood trauma as correlates of metabolic risk factors: the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA).

OBJECTIVE: Personality and childhood trauma may affect cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, evidence for an association with metabolic risk factors for CVD is limited and ambiguous. Moreover, despite their interrelatedness, personality and childhood trauma were not yet studied simultaneously. Therefore, we aimed to explore whether personality and childhood trauma are correlates of metabolic risk factors. METHODS: Among 2755 participants of the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA), we investigated through linear regression models whether Big Five personality traits (i.e.,

What impact do personality traits have on self-perception of dental aesthetics?

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion has significant social, psychological and physical impacts on the quality of life. This study aimed to study psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics among students, and how it was modified by personality traits. METHODS: Chinese version of Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Short Scale of (EPQ-RSC) and Chinese version of Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ) were used to investigate 555 undergraduate students, aged 18 to 24 years. The participants and investigators self-rated their own dental aesthetics using the Aesthetic Component (AC) of th

Parasocial interactions with media characters: the role of perceived and actual sociodemographic and psychological similarity.

INTRODUCTION: Similarity between media character and viewer is an important predictor of parasocial interactions. Thereby, similarities are often limited to single characteristics or to the similarities viewers perceive between themselves and characters. This article expands the existing literature in two ways. First, the effects of actual and perceived similarity on parasocial interactions are compared. Second, similarity is understood in a broad way. With age, gender, job, relationship, and living situation are assessed for sociodemographic similarities. Psychological similarities are consid

Personality predictors of dementia diagnosis and neuropathological burden: An individual participant data meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The extent to which the Big Five personality traits and subjective well-being (SWB) are discriminatory predictors of clinical manifestation of dementia versus dementia-related neuropathology is unclear. METHODS: Using data from eight independent studies (Ntotal = 44,531; Ndementia = 1703; baseline Mage = 49 to 81 years, 26 to 61% female; Mfollow-up range = 3.53 to 21.00 years), Bayesian multilevel models tested whether personality traits and SWB differentially predicted neuropsychological and neuropathological characteristics of dementia. RESULTS: Synthesized and individual stu

Do patients' cognitive therapy skills predict personality change during treatment of depression?

BACKGROUND: Psychological interventions can change personality, including increasing positive temperament (extraversion) and decreasing negative temperament (neuroticism), but why these changes occur is unclear. The current study tested the extent to which patients' acquisition and use of skills taught in cognitive therapy (CT) correlated with changes in positive and negative temperament during treatment of depression. METHOD: Outpatients (N = 351) with recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD) were enrolled in a 12-week CT protocol. Temperament (early and late in CT), patient skills (mid and

Fearless dominance and psychopathy: a response to Lilienfeld et al.

We respond to criticisms raised by Lilienfeld et al. (2012, The role of fearless dominance in psychopathy: Confusions, controversies, and clarifications. Personality Disorders: Theory, Research, and Treatment, 3, 327-340) about our meta-analysis (Miller & Lynam, 2012, An examination of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory's nomological network: A meta-analytic review. Personality Disorders: Theory, Research, and Treatment, 3, 305-326). We argue that Lilienfeld et al. commit multiple logical and scientific errors throughout their response: minimizing the centrality of antisocial behavior in p

Effect of Personality Type on the Occurrence of Temporomandibular Disorders-A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits are one of the major factors influencing the behavior and functioning of an individual, and they play a crucial role in the development of psychosomatic disorders and diseases. This paper aimed to evaluate the importance of personality traits in temporomandibular disorder (TMDs) development using the NEO-FFI Personality Inventory by Paul Costa and Robert McCrae (the Five-Factor Model of Personality, known as the Big Five). Moreover, the relationship between personality type and the intensity of dysfunctional changes in the stomatognathic system was assessed using

Premorbid predictors of chronic fatigue.

CONTEXT: Chronic fatigue syndrome is a disabling problem characterized by persistent fatigue lasting at least 6 months with a number of ancillary symptoms. Although the etiology of chronic fatiguing illness is unknown, some evidence suggests that stress may confer increased risk for development of the disorder. Moreover, subjects with chronic fatiguing illness may have distinctive personality traits, although this finding could reflect confounding by other mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prospective association of premorbid self-reported stress and personality with chronic fatigue-like i

A meta-analysis of personality in scientific and artistic creativity.

Theory and research in both personality psychology and creativity share an essential commonality: emphasis on the uniqueness of the individual. Both disciplines also share an emphasis on temporal consistency and have a 50-year history, and yet no quantitative review of the literature on the creative personality has been conducted. The 3 major goals of this article are to present the results of the first meta-analytic review of the literature on personality and creative achievement, to present a conceptual integration of underlying potential psychological mechanisms that personality and creativ

Late Life in the Living Room: Room Décor, Functional Limitations, and Personality.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Environmental gerontology and environmental psychology theories address adaptations of living space for disability and individual preferences. This study combines these perspectives to examine how room décor (i.e., furnishings, design, decoration) corresponds with functional limitations and personality in late life. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Older adults aged 65 and older (N = 286) completed interviews regarding living arrangements, functional limitations, personality, and depressive symptoms. Participants provided 3-4 photographs of the room where they spend the

Psychological changes after coronary angiographic intervention: pre-post comparison and follow-up.

Epidemiological studies demonstrate the relevance of cardiovascular diseases for health policies and medical care, especially coronary heart diseases and myocardial infarction. Research has shown that a significant proportion of patients undergoing coronary angiography suffer from clinically relevant mental stress. The aim of this study is to investigate to what extent the psychological state of cardiology patients changes in short- and mid-term periods after coronary angiography has been performed. The study design is naturalistic, longitudinal and comparative about consecutively admitted pat

Relationships of personality factors to perceived stress, depression, and oral lichen planus severity.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to examine relationships of hardiness and big five personality factors to depression, perceived stress, and oral lichen planus (OLP) severity. METHOD: Sixty Iranian patients with oral lichen planus completed measures of perceived stress, hardiness, big five, and depression. RESULTS: Linear regressions revealed that control and challenge significantly predicted least perceived stress. On the contrary, big five factor of neuroticism predicted more perceived stress. Furthermore, control, commitment, and extraversion negatively predicted depression levels,

The effects of extraverted temperament on agoraphobia in panic disorder.

Although situational avoidance is viewed as the most disabling aspect of panic disorder, few studies have evaluated how dimensions of neurotic (i.e., neuroticism, behavioral inhibition) and extraverted (i.e., extraversion, behavioral activation) temperament may influence the presence and severity of agoraphobia. Using logistic regression and structural equation modeling, we examined the unique effects of extraverted temperament on situational avoidance in a sample of 274 outpatients with a diagnosis of panic disorder with and without agoraphobia. Results showed low extraverted temperament (i.e

The EEG effects of tobacco smoking--a review.

In summary, smoking does produce obvious changes in EEG activity. Human studies have been limited to surface electrodes. These have provided evidence of the alpha, evoked potential, and CNV effects of smoking. Changes in alpha and evoked potential activity have been statistically analyzed across subjects. These analyses indicated statistically significant arousal effects. However, large individual differences in responding were observed but not analyzed. Analysis of individual data in the Ashton, et. al. (1974) study indicated some arousal effects and some sedative effects, depending on the pe

Complex brain networks mediation of neuroticism and extraversion on obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits significantly influence obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet their underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly defined. This study aimed to identify complex brain networks that mediate the association between personality traits and OCD, offering novel insights for personalized interventions. METHODS: We recruited 211 OCD patients who underwent clinical evaluations and rs-EEG recordings. Personality traits were measured using the Revised NEO-Five Factor Inventory, and OCD severity was assessed with the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale by clinicians. Compl

A cross-sectional study of the association between mobility test performance and personality among older adults.

BACKGROUND: Falls among the elderly are a major public health challenge. The Timed-Up and Go (TUG) test is commonly used to identify older adults with mobility limitations. This study explored the association between TUG test results and personality among community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 85 older adults. Personality was evaluated with the Five Factor Model. Times to complete the TUG as a single task (TUGST) alone and also with an additional cognitive task i.e., dual-task (DT), were recorded. Ordinary least squares OLS regression models were used to
