Influence of Wine Label Imagery: Eye-Tracking Evidence and Regulatory Implications.

INTRODUCTION: The visual design of alcohol beverage packaging plays a crucial role in shaping consumer perceptions and purchase decisions, yet regulations in many countries are relatively lax. Guidelines often focus on the inclusion of health warnings rather than overall label or packaging design, giving producers considerable freedom. In recent years, wine manufacturers have increasingly featured images on their labels that are unrelated to the product, most notably animals such as mammals, birds and insects, a strategy likely intended to exploit attentional bias. The present study examines h

Physicians' eye-tracking in neonatal intensive care: evaluating a mechanical ventilator panel.

OBJECTIVE: Assess physicians' visual attention when evaluating a mechanical ventilator panel to decide whether to adjust ventilatory parameters in a newborn on mechanical ventilation. METHODS: Experimental study involving physicians caring for critically ill neonates. Three clinical scenarios related to arterial blood gas abnormalities (hypoxemia, hypercarbia or normal blood gases) were presented on a computer screen, followed by a 30-second video of a ventilator panel while eye-tracker recorded their gaze. Three areas of interest (AOI) were defined: monitored parameters, adjusted parameters,

(No) attentional biases in obsessive-compulsive disorder? An eye-tracking study using idiosyncratic stimulus material.

Cognitive-behavioral theories propose that attentional biases contribute to the development and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, research findings have been inconsistent, with some studies supporting vigilance (i.e., rapid orientation toward threatening material) and/or maintenance biases (i.e., difficulty disengaging from threatening material), and others showing either one or neither of these biases. These inconsistencies may be related to several limitations of previous studies (e.g., no clinical control groups, focus on subgroups of participants with OCD, and us

The Influence of Refractive Errors on Facial Expression Processing in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Eye-Tracking Study.

Facial expression processing is important for social understanding; among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refractive errors may reduce visual input, further hindering their ability to recognize and interpret faces. This study aimed to investigate the gaze patterns of children with ASD when viewing facial emotion expression pictures under refractive errors and compare these patterns with those of typically developing (TD) children. A total of 76 participants diagnosed with ASD and 73 TD children matched by age were included. All children underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examin

Verb Vocabulary Supports Event Probability Use in Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) tend to interpret noncanonical sentences like passives using event probability (EP) information regardless of structure (e.g., by interpreting "The dog was chased by the squirrel" as "The dog chased the squirrel"). Verbs are a major source of EP information in adults and children with typical development (TD), who know that "chase" implies an unequal relationship among participants. Individuals with DLD have poor verb knowledge and verb-based sentence processing. Yet, they also appear to rely more on EP information than their peers.

Adults with higher social anxiety show avoidant gaze behaviour in a real-world social setting: A mobile eye tracking study.

Attentional biases are a core characteristic of social anxiety (SA). However, research has yielded conflicting findings and failed to investigate these biases in real, face-to-face social situations. Therefore, this study examined attentional biases in SA by measuring participants' eye gaze within a novel eye-tracking paradigm during a real-life social situation. Student participants (N = 30) took part in what they thought was a visual search study, when a confederate posing as another participant entered the room. Whilst all participants avoided looking at the confederate, those with higher S

Zoned in or zoned out? Investigating immersion in slot machine gambling using mobile eye-tracking.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Immersion during slot machine gambling has been linked to disordered gambling. Current conceptualizations of immersion (namely dissociation, flow and the machine zone) make contrasting predictions as to whether gamblers are captivated by the game per se ('zoned in') or motivated by the escape that immersion provides ('zoned out'). We examined whether selected eye-movement metrics can distinguish between these predictions. DESIGN AND SETTING: Pre-registered, correlational analysis in a laboratory setting. Participants gambled on a genuine slot machine for 20 minutes while

Portable device for presbyopia correction with optoelectronic lenses driven by pupil response.

A novel portable device has been developed and built to dynamically, and automatically, correct presbyopia by means of a couple of opto-electronics lenses driven by pupil tracking. The system is completely portable providing with a high range of defocus correction up to 10 D. The glasses are controlled and powered by a smartphone. To achieve a truly real-time response, image processing algorithms have been implemented in OpenCL and ran on the GPU of the smartphone. To validate the system, different visual experiments were carried out in presbyopic subjects. Visual acuity was maintained nearly

The temporal dynamics of semantic guidance in scenes.

When viewing a complex scene, the visual system must decide where to look among many potential targets. How this selection process unfolds over time-and whether it reflects changing semantic priorities-remains poorly understood. We tracked eye movements of 100 participants viewing 100 real-world scenes and modeled four distinct semantic features at each location: similarity to the scene category, similarity to other objects, similarity to the most recently fixated object, and local semantic intensity. Complementary Bayesian models of fixation likelihood and fixation onset time revealed that ea

Visual Behavior in Inline Speed Skating: An Eye-Tracking Evaluation for Performance Analysis.

This study analyzed oculomotor behavior (fixations and saccades) in 19 competitive inline speed skaters (5 males, 14 females; aged 10-26 years) from the Aragonese Skating Federation (Spain), comparing high-performance (N1) and intermediate (N2) groups. Participants completed optometric assessments and eye-tracking during 200 m time trials on a banked oval track using a Pupil Labs Neon device, with recordings taken before (PRE) and after (POST) intensive training. Results showed visual behavior remained stable overall, but curved segments (C1, C2) required significantly more fixations and sacca

Reading with deaf eyes: Automatic activation of speech-based phonology during word recognition is task dependent.

Literacy levels are highly variable within the deaf population and, compared to the general population, on average, reading levels are lower. As speech-based phonological coding is a known predictor of reading success in hearing individuals, much research has focussed on deaf readers' processing of speech-based phonological codes during word recognition and reading as a possible explanation for the widespread reading difficulties in the deaf population. Although results are mixed, there is recent growing evidence that deaf and hearing readers process speech-based phonological codes differently

iVOMS: Instrumented Vestibular / Ocular motor screen in healthy controls and mild traumatic brain injury.

Objective Vestibular/ocular deficits occur with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The vestibular/ocular motor screening (VOMS) tool is used to assess individuals post-mTBI, which primarily relies upon subjective self-reported symptoms. Instrumenting the VOMS (iVOMS) with technology may allow for more objective assessment post-mTBI, which reflects actual task performance. This study aimed to validate the iVOMS analytically and clinically in mTBI and controls. Methods Seventy-nine people with sub-acute mTBI (<12 weeks post-injury) and forty-four healthy control participants performed the VOMS

A prospective multi-center study quantifying visual inattention in delirium using generative models of the visual processing stream.

The visual attentional deficits in delirium are poorly characterized. Studies have highlighted neuro-anatomical abnormalities in the visual processing stream but fail at quantifying these abnormalities at a functional level. To identify these deficits, we undertook a multi-center eye-tracking study where we recorded 210 sessions from 42 patients using a novel eye-tracking system that was made specifically for free-viewing in the (ICU); each session lasted 10 min and was labeled with the delirium status of the patient using the Confusion Assessment Method in ICU (CAM-ICU). To analyze this data,

The role of (observed) gaze behaviour in identity recognition.

Recognising familiar people is an important function of the human visual system that supports daily social interactions. In addition to static visual cues (e.g., face shape and texture), biological motion cues such as idiosyncratic facial motion and gait contribute to identity recognition. Surprisingly, recent research has indicated an individuals' eye movements exhibit idiosyncratic patterns that contain identifiable information, though it is largely unknown to what extent human observers exploit this information. The current study measures sensitivity of human observers to idiosyncratic gaze

Moment-to-Moment Coordination of Parent-Infant Visual Attention: An Actor-Partner Interdependence Framework Within Dynamic Structural Equation Modeling.

Coordination of caregivers' (N = 50, five fathers and 45 mothers) and 9-month-old infants' (15 girls, 34 boys, one not reported) gaze during naturalistic play with a puzzle and activity board was examined using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model within a Dynamic Structural Equation Modeling framework. This approach allows for the simultaneous estimation of each partner's effect on their own subsequent looking and on their partner's subsequent looking. Analysis of gaze data from head-mounted eye trackers worn by North American, middle-class, racially and ethnically diverse caregivers and i

Clinically accessible eye-tracking in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy: exploratory classification modeling and gaze allocation to disease-related periocular images.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is an autoimmune orbital disease that may cause ocular motility abnormalities, altered periocular appearance, and psychosocial burden. However, clinically practical tools for early recognition and objective functional assessment remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate whether clinically accessible eye-tracking could support auxiliary classification of thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy and characterize visual attention patterns toward disease-related periocular images. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 229 adults from a tertiary op

Multimodal brain-computer interface for robotic control: integration of real-time gaze tracking and EEG-based motor imagery.

Individuals with upper limb dysfunction face significant challenges in performing everyday tasks, often depending on healthcare professionals, caregivers, or family members. Such reliance places a continuous burden on helpers who must remain available for assistance. To address these challenges, this study investigated a virtual hybrid brain-computer interface (BCI) system that integrates gaze tracking with motor imagery (MI) to control a robotic arm, potentially reducing the dependency on human support. Twenty healthy, right-handed participants took part in a virtual game environment where th
