Differences in asymmetric perception of facial expression in free-vision chimeric stimuli and reaction time.

Two forms of a Chimeric Faces Free-Vision Task used to estimate cerebral asymmetry for perceiving facial expression were given to young male subjects, n = 60 in a first session and n = 40 in a retest session. Test-retest and split-half reliabilities were high. As expected from assumptions of right-hemisphere specialization for processing expression, faces with left-sided smiles were more frequently judged as looking happier than those with right-sided smiles in both forms. However, there were individual differences in direction and extent of bias, which were systematically related to reaction

Right brain, left brain; left face, right face: hemisphericity and the expression of facial emotion.

Research on the asymmetry of facial expressions is reviewed in terms of neuroanatomy, qualitative and quantitative measures of asymmetrical expression, method of expression elicitation (spontaneous, posed, imagery-based), type of expression (happy, sad, etc.), and expression rating procedures. Neuroanatomical evidence indicated that contralateral control of facial musculature exists only for the lower face and that different motor pathways are responsible for spontaneous versus posed expressions. Empirical research on the differential assignment of qualitative trait attributes to facial region

From Social to Symbolic: Investigating the Neural Networks Involved in Emoji and Facial Expression Recognition.

Facial expressions and emojis serve as fundamental social cues, yet their neural processing remains distinct. Using swLORETA source reconstruction based on EEG/ERP signals at N170 stage, we analyzed participant-specific brain activations in 50 young, healthy individuals performing an emotion recognition task with real faces and emojis. Behavioral results revealed higher accuracy and faster reaction times for emojis compared to faces consistent with prior electrophysiological findings on P300 amplitude effects. Both stimulus types activated bilateral fusiform areas (BA19/37) and the orbitofront

Incongruences Between Facial Expression and Self-Reported Emotional Reactivity in Frontotemporal Dementia and Related Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Emotional reactivity normally involves a synchronized coordination of subjective experience and facial expression. These aspects of emotional reactivity can be uncoupled by neurological illness and produce adverse consequences for patient and caregiver quality of life because of misunderstandings regarding the patient's presumed internal state. Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is often associated with altered social and emotional functioning. FTD is a heterogeneous disease, and socioemotional changes in patients could result from altered internal experience, altered facial expressive a

Cutaneous and Ganglion Sarcoidosis Induced by Polycaprolactone Facial Filler: A New Expression of ASIA Syndrome?

UNLABELLED: Dermal fillers are applied using a minimally invasive technique with a good safety profile. However, they can have side effects. We present the case of a patient who, 2 months after undergoing polycaprolactone (Ellansé®) injections, developed nodular facial and nodal lesions that were compatible with sarcoidosis on histology. This complication has not been previously described for polycaprolactone and could be the expression of an autoimmune syndrome induced by adjuvants. LEARNING POINTS: Autoimmune/autoinflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA) is a recently devised umbrel

Automated recognition of spontaneous facial expression in individuals with autism spectrum disorder: parsing response variability.

BACKGROUND: Reduction or differences in facial expression are a core diagnostic feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet evidence regarding the extent of this discrepancy is limited and inconsistent. Use of automated facial expression detection technology enables accurate and efficient tracking of facial expressions that has potential to identify individual response differences. METHODS: Children and adults with ASD (N = 124) and typically developing (TD, N = 41) were shown short clips of "funny videos." Using automated facial analysis software, we investigated differences between ASD a

Facial expression and the affective component of cynical hostility in male coronary heart disease patients.

This study describes the affective component of hostility as measured by the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale (Ho; W. Cook & D. Medley, 1954) by examining the relationship between facial expressions of emotion and Ho scores in 116 male coronary heart disease patients. Patients underwent the videotaped Type A Structured Interview, from which facial expressions were later coded using the Facial Action Coding System. They also completed the Cook-Medley Ho scale. Facial expression of the emotion of contempt was significantly related to Ho scores; anger expression was not. Also, there was a significant

Parental brain responses to own and unknown children's emotional facial expressions: An fMRI study.

The parent-child relationship is crucial for children's socio-emotional development. Previous research, mostly in mothers of infants, has implicated neural networks subserving reward, saliency, and theory of mind (ToM). In this preregistered study, we sought to extend these findings to fathers and older children by examining maternal and paternal brain responses to preschool-aged children's emotional faces. Our investigation included 89 parents (41 mothers, 48 fathers) and their children (44 daughters, 45 sons). We examined the effects of children's facial identity (own, unknown) and emotion (

Implicit processing of basic facial expressions in young children with autism: an eye-tracking study.

BACKGROUND: Implicit processing of facial expressions by individuals serves as the foundation for accurate recognition and comprehension of emotional information. Difficulties in recognizing facial expressions was considered a typical characteristic of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, it remains unclear whether young children with autism have intact implicit processing of basic facial expressions. AIMS: The present study utilized eye-tracking technology to assess the implicit processing performance of facial expressions in young children with ASD. METHODS: A total of th

The power of pain: The temporal-spatial dynamics of empathy induced by body gestures and facial expressions.

Two non-verbal pain representations, body gestures and facial expressions, can communicate pain to others and elicit our own empathic responses. However, the specific impact of these representations on neural responses of empathy, particularly in terms of temporal and spatial neural mechanisms, remains unclear. To address this issue, the present study developed a kinetic pain empathy paradigm comprising short animated videos depicting a protagonist's "real life" pain and no-pain experiences through body gestures and facial expressions. Electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings were conducted on

Sensitivity and response bias in non-clinical social anxiety to detect changes in facial expressions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous research has not established a consensus on the ability of higher socially anxious individuals to detect facial expressions. The purpose of this study was to examine this issue using Signal Detection Theory (SDT) as a framework. METHODS: Participants with higher levels of social anxiety (HSA) and lower levels of social anxiety (LSA) were instructed to complete a change-detection task. Prototypical (faces with congruent eyes and mouth, i.e., happy eyes and a smiling mouth) and blended (faces with incongruent eyes and mouth, i.e., neutral eyes and a happy mou

Maternal childhood emotional abuse increases cardiovascular responses to children's emotional facial expressions.

Parents with a history of childhood maltreatment may be more likely to respond inadequately to their child's emotional cues, such as crying or screaming, due to previous exposure to prolonged stress. While studies have investigated parents' physiological reactions to their children's vocal expressions of emotions, less attention has been given to their responses when perceiving children's facial expressions of emotions. The present study aimed to determine if viewing facial expressions of emotions in children induces cardiovascular changes in mothers (hypo- or hyper-arousal) and whether these

Advanced Injection of Botulinum Toxin in the Nasal Muscles: A Novel Dynamic Change in Facial Expression.

BACKGROUND: Among the nasal muscles, the levator labii superior alaeque nasi (LLSAN) acts as a transitional muscle that conjugates with other nasal and perinasal muscles. Thus, when treating the nasal region with Botulinum toxin (BTX), it is important to understand local nasal muscular dynamics and how they can influence the muscular dynamics of the entire face. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of cases treated by an injection pattern encompassing the face, including nasal muscles. Photographs were taken at rest and during motion (frontal and oblique views), before and after treatmen

Elevated TRPV2 expression in the facial nerve of rats by cold stimulation: Implications for Bell's palsy.

OBJECTIVE: Bell's palsy, also referred to as clinical manifestations of unilateral facial nerve palsy, encompasses downward angling of the corners of the mouth, the absence of forehead creases, and unilateral incomplete eyelid closure. The incidence of Bell's palsy has increased progressively in recent years, but the underlying mechanism of its occurrence remains unknown; therefore, it is essential to investigate both the cause and treatment of Bell's palsy. Member 2 of the Subfamily V Transient Receptor Potential Cation Channel is a mechanically and thermally sensitive ion channel that plays

Real Face Value: The Processing of Naturalistic Facial Expressions in the Macaque Inferior Temporal Cortex.

For primates, expressions of fear are thought to be powerful social signals. In laboratory settings, faces with fearful expressions have reliably evoked valence effects in inferior temporal cortex. However, because macaques use so called "fear grins" in a variety of different contexts, the deeper question is whether the macaque inferior temporal cortex is tuned to the prototypical fear grin, or to conspecifics signaling fear? In this study, we combined neuroimaging with the results of a behavioral task to investigate how macaques encode a wide variety of fearful facial expressions. In Experime

Right and left inferior frontal opercula are involved in discriminating angry and sad facial expressions.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging studies suggest that the inferior frontal operculum (IFO) is part of a neuronal network involved in facial expression processing, but the causal role of this region in emotional face discrimination remains elusive. OBJECTIVE: We used cathodal (inhibitory) tDCS to test whether right (r-IFO) and left (l-IFO) IFO play a role in discriminating basic facial emotions in healthy volunteers. Specifically, we tested if the two sites are selectively involved in the processing of facial expressions conveying high or low arousal emotions. Based on the Arousal Hypothesis we expect
