PURPOSE: The effect of high-dose radiation therapy on facial nerve grafts is controversial. Some authors believe radiotherapy is so detrimental to the outcome of facial nerve graft function that dynamic or static slings should be performed instead of facial nerve grafts in all patients who are to receive postoperative radiation therapy. Unfortunately, the facial function achieved with dynamic and static slings is almost always inferior to that after facial nerve grafts. In this retrospective study, we compared facial nerve function in irradiated and unirradiated nerve grafts. METHODS AND MATER

A 54-year-old man presented with two episodes of dysarthria and left facial droop. Both episodes resolved by the time of examination. MRI of the brain revealed a right frontotemporal, heterogeneously enhancing mass with surrounding vasogenic oedema, suggestive of a high-grade primary brain neoplasm. The patient was administered preoperative 5-aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride (Gliolan), and fluorescence-guided resection of the lesion was undertaken. Cryptococcus gattii infection was diagnosed from the specimen and the patient was given appropriate antifungal treatment. This is the first report

Paraneoplastic syndromes may affect the central and peripheral nervous system of adults and children with cancer. Neurological symptoms may resolve with treatment of the underlying neoplasm. We report the case of a child with Wilms tumor who presented with generalized weakness, fatigue, ptosis, hypokinesis, dysarthria, urinary retention, facial diplegia, ophthalmoplegia, and autonomic dysfunction. Routine electrodiagnostic testing, including repetitive nerve stimulation, was normal. Clinical features and stimulation single-fiber electromyogram were consistent with a neuromuscular junction tran

A case is reported in which a unilateral parotid gland cystadenolymphoma was combined with actinomycosis. A 48-year-old woman presented with a mass in the left parotid region and paresis of the lower left palpebra. The computed tomography, echography, and parotid radiographic findings did not exclude a neoplasm of the left parotid gland. The ramus of the mandible was involved in the process. Intraoperative freezing histology, total parotidectomy, and partial mandibulectomy were performed, with sacrifice of the facial nerve followed by nerve reconstruction. The final histological evaluation was

Osteoma is a benign osteogenic tumor, which is characterized the slow-growing proliferation of compact or cancellous bone. The etiology of the lesion is not well established. Among the hypotheses, the following are related: a traumatic factor, infectious processes, or true neoplasm due to the origin of cartilaginous cells. It can present at any age, usually in young adult individuals, with equal prevalence in both sexes. The clinical characteristics of the peripheral osteoma are represented by slow asymptomatic growth, which leads to swelling and, thus, facial asymmetry. When it is related to

A 50-year-old woman presented with gradually increasing right-sided facial numbness. Neuroimaging revealed a lesion in the right cavernous sinus mimicking meningioma. The resection of the right cavernous sinus neoplasm was implemented via endoscopic endonasal approach under general anesthesia. Histological examination of the surgical specimen revealed adenoid cystic carcinoma. Adenoid cystic carcinoma in the cavernous sinus is extremely rare as a primary lesion and challenging to manage. Little data exist to guide treatment when this tumor extends to involve the structure of cavernous sinus. O

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant neoplasm that commonly arises in the major or minor salivary gland and usually forms mass lesions. Here, we report a case of ACC involving a 56-year-old man, who displayed right multiple cranial nerve palsies with ipsilateral severe facial pain but not any mass formation. Right submaxillary gland biopsy after repeated challenges at last revealed the primary focus of ACC with perineural invasion and without lymph node metastasis. The neurological manifestations were considered to be attributed to the perineural spread of ACC. It is extremely rare fo

A 16-year-old female with cyclic neutropenia (CN) was incidentally found to have a thoracic vertebral mass during the preoperative work-up for maxillary sinus surgery. An exploratory thoracotomy revealed a very vascular tumor involving T-10 and T-11 vertebral bodies. Gross total resection of the tumor was achieved. Pathology revealed a solid variant of aneurysmal bone cyst. This is a rare benign neoplasm of bone more commonly seen in the mandible and facial bones as well as involving the small tubular bones of the hands and feet. Because of its rarity, location, and an unknown association with

Myoepithelial carcinoma (MECA) is a rare salivary gland (SG) neoplasm (0.1-0.45% of all SG tumors) that often presents with bland cytomorphology and can be misclassified as cellular pleomorphic adenoma (PA) or myoepithelioma. This is particularly challenging in MECA ex-PA cases, especially if tumor shows minimal to no capsular invasion. We report a rare case of a 76-year-old female; history of left superficial parotidectomy with diagnosis (outside hospital) of cellular PA, who re-presented 9 months post surgery with enlarging left parotid mass, neck lymphadenopathy and facial nerve deficits. Paragangliomas are the most common tumors at jugular foramen and pose a great surgical challenge. Careful clinical history and physical examination must be performed to adequately evaluate neurological deficits and its chronologic evolution, also to delineate an overview of the patient performance status. Complete imaging evaluation including MRI and CT scans should be performed, and angiography is a must to depict tumor blood supply and sigmoid sinus/internal jugular vein patency. Screening for multifocal paragangliomas is advisable, with a whole-body imaging. Laboratory investigation of endo

A retrospective analysis of diagnostic procedures and clinical outcome of patients with neurogenic tumours of the head and neck region was performed. There were 25 patients - 16 with neurinoma, 5 with neurofibroma and 4 with neurogenic sarcoma - who presented with a mass in the head and neck area. In 13 patients, the neurinoma originated from the facial nerve, 2 of them were located in the middle ear and mastoid and showed facial palsy. Four patients presented with neurofibromatosis type 1. Twenty-three patients were operated on to remove the tumorous masses. Eighteen tumours were assigned int

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland is a rare benign neoplasm. This is the first reported case of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) findings for sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland.
CASE: A 60-year-old male presented with painless, bilateral parotid swelling noted for 5 months. The swelling was more pronounced on the right. Examination revealed bilaterally prominent parotid glands with diffuse firmness but no discrete masses. There was no evidence of facial nerve dysfunction. Laboratory evaluation was negative for infectious and autoimmune etiologies. Magnetic r

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign neoplasm of the salivary glands, occurring in both major and minor glands, with a predilection for the intraoral palate. Its presentation in the upper lip is rare and, when large, may result in facial deformity, alveolar bone resorption, and tooth displacement, especially in long-standing lesions. Clinically, PA presents as a solid, painless, slow-growing, and well-circumscribed mass, which may cause functional morbidity depending on its size and location. The differential diagnosis includes canalicular adenoma, other benign minor salivary gla

Cutaneous melanocytic neoplasms in dogs generally present as benign lesions, unlike their oral or digital counterparts, but treatment can be challenging when complete surgical excision is restricted by anatomical location. A 5-year-old neutered male Shiba Inu was evaluated for a firm, well-circumscribed, black-pigmented nodule measuring 4 × 3.8 cm on the left facial region, with surrounding pigmented papules. Histopathological examination of punch biopsy specimens confirmed cutaneous melanocytoma with superficial subcutaneous involvement observed in two samples. Complete surgical excision was

BACKGROUND: Acoustic neuroma (AN), or vestibular schwannoma, accounts for 8% to 10% of intracranial neoplasms and 80% of cerebellopontine angle tumors. Postoperative vestibular symptoms are common, yet research has largely failed to integrate the perspectives of both health care providers and patients.
METHOD: This case report documents the perioperative experiences of a nurse diagnosed with AN, including psychological changes, symptom progression, and rehabilitation, from a dual nurse-patient perspective.
RESULTS: The patient presented with vertigo and an unsteady gait and was diagnosed wit

Lipomas, the most common soft-tissue mesenchymal neoplasms in adults, are characterized by the proliferation of mature white adipocytes without cytologic atypia. Lipomas are rarely observed in the head and neck region. We present a case of resection and orthognathic surgical removal of an intramuscular lipoma of the mandible with involvement of the mandibular ramus and condylar head and neck. An 18-year-old female patient was referred to our hospital for orthognathic surgery for the management of facial asymmetry and mandibular prognathism. The patient did not present with facial swelling, pai

Ectopic pituitary tumors are neoplasms with no connection to the pituitary gland and are commonly deposited in other areas of the anterior skull base. A 32-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of right-sided facial weakness, sensorineural hearing loss, diplopia, and severe headaches. Physical examination revealed a mid-dilated sluggishly reactive right pupil with slight limitation in all gazes, as well as right-sided orbicularis weakness, lagophthalmos, and decreased facial sensation. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head without contrast revealed a 3.7 × 1.8 × 2.6 cm mildl

Myopericytoma is a benign tumor that is composed of myoid-appearing oval to spindle-shaped cells with a concentric perivascular pattern of growth. The tumor is morphologically heterogeneous and can exhibit a broad histologic spectrum. We describe a case of multiple myopericytoma occurring in the head and neck skin region with involvement of the parotid gland where it is known to occur very rarely. A 40-year-old woman noticed multiple enlarging, painless, round-shaped masses on her left cheek. The patient had experienced a similar lesion of the same area 8 years earlier which was completely exc

Parotid neoplasms represent 3% of all head and neck tumours, and most are benign. Malignant tumours account for 14-25% of cases. Surgery is the treatment of choice, with options ranging from simple enucleation to radical parotidectomy. Sixteen patients presented with a history of a painless parotid lump. Diagnosis was achieved by ultrasound scan and MRI. Fifteen superficial parotidectomies and 1 nerve-sparing total parotidectomy were carried out. At histology, 10 pleomorphic adenomas, 4 Warthin's tumours, 1 lymphoepithelial cyst and 1 sebaceous adenocarcinoma were detected. In the single case

CASE REPORT: Primary low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is an extremely rare tumour of the salivary glands and arises from undifferentiated pluripotential mesenchymal cells. We report a case of a huge (17 x ll x 10 cm) primary LGFMS of the parotid gland of a 57-year-old woman. Clinically, a 12x8 cm firm, non-tender, left parotid mass was observed, facial nerve function was not impaired and no enlarged lymph nodules were palpated on the neck. A contrast axial CT scan showed intense enhancement of the enlarged left parotid gland. The fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) was compatible with sa
