Neighborhood, family, and subjective socioeconomic status: How do they relate to adolescent health?

This study investigated the role of neighborhood, family, and individual subjective socioeconomic status (SES) in predicting adolescent physical health and psychological characteristics. Three hundred fifteen adolescents completed assessments of blood pressure, cortisol, and body mass index (BMI). Results revealed that lower neighborhood SES was associated with higher BMI and lower basal cortisol levels and that these effects persisted after controlling for family SES. Both family SES and neighborhood SES predicted negative psychological characteristics and experiences such as hostility and di

Burden and health outcomes of family caregivers of hospitalized bone marrow transplant patients.

Twenty-four family caregivers of bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients were interviewed to describe the burden of care and health outcomes (anxiety, depression, symptom distress and fatigue). A descriptive correlational research design with repeated measures was used. Data were collected in a conference room in the oncology unit of a midwestern university hospital using a battery of questionnaires. Questionnaires were administered pre-BMT (prior to the patient's hospitalization) and 5 and 20 days post-BMT. Objective burden remained at a similar level throughout the study (mean range 31.4 to 32

The reported health and functioning of children maltreated while in family foster care.

The ability to assess accurately risk factors for maltreatment while in family foster care is essential for developing prevention and intervention strategies. Yet information about children involved in maltreatment episodes while in foster care is severely limited. This correlational study reports on characteristics, health, and functioning parameters of all 78 children with substantiated maltreatment reports between 1984-1988 in an urban foster care program as compared to a random sample of 229 nonmaltreated children in foster care in the same time period. Almost 50% of the substantiated malt

Levels, patterns and determinants of using reversible contraceptives for limiting family planning in India: evidence from National Family Health Survey, 2015-16.

BACKGROUND: Demand for family planning is predominantly for birth limiting rather than birth spacing in India. Despite several family planning programmes in India, the use of reversible contraception for limiting family planning has been stagnant and largely depends on female sterilization. Though many researchers have examined patterns and determinants of using modern contraception for total family planning, studies on patterns and determinants of contraceptive use for birth limiting are limited in India. This paper examines the patterns of contraceptive use for liming demand and its determin

Health family trees: a tool for finding and helping young family members of coronary and cancer prone pedigrees in Texas and Utah.

We report on the feasibility and utility of a new approach for identifying the small percentage of families in the general population with strong familial predisposition to early coronary heart disease, strokes, and common familial cancers (breast, colon, lung), using the "Health Family Tree," a medical family history. A total of 24,332 "trees" were completed by parents and students in 37 high schools in 14 urban and rural communities in Texas and Utah during the years 1980-86. Completed "trees" were obtained from 68 per cent of all enrolled students. High-risk families, included 1,796 familie

Promoting children's mental health in family supportive housing: a community-university partnership for formerly homeless children and families.

Emerging research indicates that significant numbers of formerly homeless families residing in permanent supportive housing have caregivers with substance use and mental health disorders, and children with histories of exposure to violence, abuse, and out-of-home placement. These factors place children at risk for adverse psychosocial outcomes, including later homelessness, providing a strong rationale for embedding child-focused prevention and intervention services in supportive housing contexts. This article describes a developing community-university partnership whose goal is to advance pra

Investigating the Health and Health-Related Quality of Life Impacts of the Criminal Legal System on Families: A Scoping Review.

A scoping review was conducted to present the state of the science regarding the health and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) effects of having a family member in contact with the criminal legal system (CLS). The review examined how the following have been studied: 1) types of family relationships, 2) the point of CLS contact, 3) mental health outcomes, 4) physical health outcomes, and 5) HRQOL outcomes. The final sample of 40 studies was largely secondary analyses of datasets (93%; n=37) that investigated a parent-child relationship (78%; n=31). Incarceration was the most frequently meas

The development and first results of a health-related outcomes set in familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) patients: Knowledge is health.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is the most common hereditary lipid disorder requiring life-long treatment to prevent cardiovascular disease. A recent concept in healthcare is not only to focus on outcomes defined by healthcare professionals, but also take Patient-Reported Outcomes Measures (PROMs) into account. The aim of this study is (1) to describe the development and first results of a health-related outcomes set including PROMs for FH patients and (2) investigate the influence of patient knowledge on health-related outcomes. METHODS: A multidisciplinary group of

The color of health: how racism, segregation, and inequality affect the health and well-being of preterm infants and their families.

Racism, segregation, and inequality contribute to health outcomes and drive health disparities across the life course, including for newborn infants and their families. In this review, we address their effects on the health and well-being of newborn infants and their families with a focus on preterm birth. We discuss three causal pathways: increased risk; lower-quality care; and socioeconomic disadvantages that persist into infancy, childhood, and beyond. For each pathway, we propose specific interventions and research priorities that may remedy the adverse effects of racism, segregation, and
