The frequency of familial mediterranean Fever related amyloidosis in renal waiting list for transplantation.

OBJECTIVE: Our goal is to investigate the distribution of MEFV mutations in patients with renal amyloidosis who are in renal transplant waiting list which is prepared for transplantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: FMF was diagnosed in 25 of the 297 patients between the years 2004 and 2008, who were involved in the study (15 male, 10 female; age 34±7.8). 5 out of 25 patients were transplanted, remaining were waiting for Tx. Biopsy results were amyloidosis and taken from renal (n:16), rectal (n:8) and duodenal (1).All of them were carrier of mutations in both pyrin alleles. The primer cause of chro

Familial association between type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune and related diseases.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: In the era of genome-wide association studies, familial risks are used to estimate disease heritability and success in gene identification. We wanted to estimate associations between type 1 diabetes mellitus and 33 autoimmune and related diseases in parents, offspring, singleton siblings and twins. METHODS: The availability of a Multigeneration Register in Sweden provides reliable access to families throughout the last century. The diseases in individual family members were obtained through linkage to the Hospital Discharge Register. Standardised incidence ratios (SIRs) were

Familial aggregation of age-related hearing loss in an epidemiological study of older adults.

PURPOSE: To estimate the genetic contributions to presbycusis. METHOD: Presbycusis was assessed by audiometric measurements at 3 waves of the population-based Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study (EHLS). Measurements from the most recent hearing examination were used, at which time the subjects (3,510 participants from the EHLS study) were between 48 and 100 years of age. Heritability of presbycusis was estimated using maximum likelihood methods in 973 biological relative pairs from 376 families. Familial aggregation was also evaluated by tetrachoric correlations, odds ratios, and lambda statis

Associations among family-of-origin food-related experiences, expectancies, and disordered eating.

OBJECTIVE: The study reported here integrates research on family-of-origin learning experiences and adult eating/thinness expectancies in the study of risk for eating disordered behavior. METHOD: A sample of women manifesting a wide range of eating disordered behaviors (n = 66) were compared in their retrospective reports of family learning, current eating and dieting expectancies, and current eating disordered behaviors. RESULTS: History of food-related teasing from friends and family, negative maternal modeling, and friends' criticism of eating all related to both adult disordered behavior

Provision of contraceptive and related services by publicly funded family planning clinics, 2003.

CONTEXT: In addition to contraceptive services, publicly funded family planning clinics provide low-income women with a range of reproductive diagnostic, treatment and educational services. Nationally representative information about the scope of services available from clinics is needed to formulate policy and programmatic recommendations. METHODS: In 2003, more than 1,000 U.S. clinics responded to an eight-page survey on service availability and clinic policies. Differences in the proportions of clinics reporting each service or policy were examined by clinic type and receipt of Title X fun

Elicited repetitive daily blindness: a new familial disorder related to migraine and epilepsy.

The authors report a family affected by multiple daily episodes of transient visual loss, elicited repetitive daily blindness (ERDB); the onset was early in life, and the disease followed a benign course. ERDB is associated with childhood epilepsy and familial hemiplegic migraine, apparently segregating as a monogenic, autosomal dominant condition with variable expression. Genetic linkage to CACNA1A was excluded.

Ethnicity, but not cancer family history, is related to response to a population-based mailed questionnaire.

PURPOSE: To determine if family history and ethnic background are factors affecting response to a mailed cancer family history questionnaire from the Ontario Familial Breast Cancer Registry. METHODS: Individuals diagnosed with primary invasive breast carcinomas (probands) were mailed a family history questionnaire, the first contact in a multi-stage process. This questionnaire obtained cancer family history and ethnicity data. After one month, a follow up telephone call was made to those who did not return this questionnaire and attempts were made to ask similar questions by telephone intervi

Familial blepharospasm is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait and relates to a novel unassigned gene.

Blepharospasm (BSP) is a common form of primary torsion dystonia (PTD). Although most cases are sporadic, an increased familial incidence of BSP has been reported. Precisely how blepharospasm is inherited remains unclear. We report on two Italian families with adult-onset focal BSP inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with reduced penetrance. None of the affected family members had the 3-bp (GAG) or the 18-bp deletion in the DYT1 gene. In one family, linkage analysis allowed us to exclude segregation of the disease with the known PTD loci (DYT1, DYT6, DYT7, and DYT13). These findings sugge

Genetics of Carney complex and related familial lentiginoses, and other multiple tumor syndromes.

Carney complex is a multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndrome that affects the adrenal cortex, the pituitary and thyroid glands, and the gonads. The complex is also associated with skin and mucosa pigmentation abnormalities and myxoid and other neoplasms of mesenchymal and neural crest origin. Thus, this syndrome also belongs to another group of genetic disorders, the lentiginoses (or lentigenoses), which include the Peutz-Jeghers, LEOPARD, arterial dissections and lentiginosis, and Laugier-Hunziker syndromes, Cowden disease and Ruvalcaba-Myhre-Smith (Bannayan-Zonana) syndrome and the centro

Families of children with Prader-Willi syndrome: stress-support and relations to child characteristics.

This study examined stress-support in 42 families of 3 to 18-year-old children with Prader-Willi syndrome. Parents were asked about themselves and their families, their child with Prader-Willi syndrome, family supports, and family stress. Compared to reported stress levels in families of children with mixed etiologies of retardation, parents of children with Prader-Willi syndrome showed higher levels of parent and family problems, and comparable levels of pessimism. Parents of children with Prader-Willi syndrome listed other family members and friends as their main supporters; often such suppo

Relation of the CD11/CD18 family of leukocyte antigens to the transient neutropenia caused by chemoattractants.

Adherence of leukocytes to the endothelium is a prerequisite for infiltration and accumulation of cells at an inflammatory site. Recent studies suggest that the CD11/CD18 family of adhesion-promoting receptors plays a crucial role in the initial adherence of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) to endothelium. We have studied the effect of the anti-CD18 monoclonal antibody (MoAb) IB4, on movement of PMN in rabbits. Accumulation of PMNs in the skin induced by a local injection of the chemoattractant, zymosan-activated serum (ZAS), was strongly inhibited, in a dose-dependent fashion, by intraveno

A new familial syndrome with impaired function of three related peptide growth factors.

We describe a new familial syndrome in three siblings; it is biochemically characterized by a combined defect of the action of the three related peptides insulin, insulin-like growth factor I (IGF I) and epidermal growth factor (EGF). Clinically, the disease has features of Werner syndrome with lipodystrophy, scleroderma-like alterations of the skin, alterations of the skeleton and contractures of joints. In addition, one of the patients has an insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus. Studies with cultured fibroblasts obtained from skin biopsies show a markedly reduced stimulation of RNA synthesis

Two populations of factor VIII-related antigen in a family with von Willebrand's disease.

The factor VIII-related antigen in a patient with von Willebrand's disease showed increased anodal mobility on two-dimensional immunoelectrophoresis. However, the antigen present in several of this patient's relatives showed two distinct peaks, one in the normal position and one similar to that of the patient. Very little of the patient's antigen could be recovered from ethanol precipitates or cryoprecipitates of whole plasma. Only the slower component could be recovered from the precipitates prepared from plasma of these family members showing two populations of antigen, the faster moving ant

Atopic disease in seven-year-old children. Incidence in relation to family history.

The incidence of atopic disease and its relation to the family history was studied by questionnaire in 1325 children, 7 years of age. A higher incidence of bronchial asthma (2.7%) was found than in a previous Swedish study. The total incidence of atopic disease in the children was 15.1% with a higher level when there was a double parental history of such disease (42.6%) as compared with a single such history (19.8%). When both parents had an identical type of atopic disease, i.e. respiratory or skin, the incidence of atopic disease was higher (72.2%) than when non-identical types occurred in t

Parental Perceptions and Family Impact on Adolescents' Oral Health-Related Quality of Life in Relation to the Severity of Malocclusion and Caries Status.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Parents/caregivers' reports are valuable because they frequently play a crucial role in making decisions concerning a child's health, and their perspectives can significantly impact treatment choices. Furthermore, negative effects of oral health issues extend beyond just the adolescent patient, having an impact on family life. The aim of this study is to explore the perception of parents/caregivers regarding their children's oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and how the OHRQoL of adolescents impacts their family life. METHODS: The Parental-Caregiver Perceptio

Family-Related Factors and HIV-Related Outcomes Among Black Young Men Who Have Sex with Men in Mississippi.

Given their disproportionate HIV incidence, there is a critical need to identify factors related to HIV risk among Black young men who have sex with men (YMSM) in the southeastern United States. This study investigated the association of family factors and HIV-related outcomes among Black YMSM in Mississippi ages 14-20 (n = 72). Multivariable regression models evaluated associations of family factors and outcomes. Greater parent/child communication about sex was associated with fewer lifetime male sex partners and lower odds of lifetime anal sex. Greater parental monitoring was associated with

Exploring family, health system, and health professional dynamics related to implementation of a five-component framework for weight and lifestyle conversations with children and families.

INTRODUCTION: Brief intervention frameworks can support health professionals to motivate patients to adopt lifestyle changes. In New South Wales, Australia, health services use the 5As (ask, assess, advise, assist, and arrange) framework to address unhealthy lifestyles and overweight and obesity in children. This study assessed health professionals' adherence to the 5As framework and factors influencing families' perceptions and propensity to adopt lifestyle changes. METHODS: This observational, cross-sectional study analyzed data from electronic medical records and caregiver surveys from a r

Oxidized LDL level is related to gene expression of tumour necrosis factor super family members in children and young adults with familial hypercholesterolaemia.

OBJECTIVE: Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is associated with increased risk of premature atherosclerosis. Inflammation is a key event in atherogenesis, and we have previously reported an inflammatory imbalance between tumour necrosis factor (TNF)α and interleukin-10 in children with FH. Based on the potential role of TNF-related molecules in inflammation, we investigated the regulation of other members of the TNF superfamily (TNFSF)/TNF receptor superfamily (TNFRSF) in children and young adults with FH and matched healthy controls. METHODS: Expression of TNFSF/TNFRSF genes in peripheral
