Effects of abomasal infusion of long-chain fatty acids on intake, feeding behavior and milk production in dairy cows.

Fat is often fed to dairy cows to increase the energy concentration of their diet; however, feeding fat often reduces dry matter intake (DMI), which limits its impact on metabolizable energy (ME) intake. To investigate the effects of postruminal fat infusion on intake, feeding behavior, and milk production of dairy cows at two stages of lactation (55 and 111 d postpartum), six Holstein x British Friesian cows were infused into the abomasum, with a mixture of rapeseed and sunflower oils supplying predominantly unsaturated long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). Dry matter intake was significantly depres

Intake limitations, feeding behavior, and rumen function of cows challenged with rumen fill from dietary fiber or inert bulk.

Twelve multiparous, rumen-cannulated cows (17 DIM) were fed 25 or 35% NDF diets without or with added rumen-inert bulk as water-filled plastic containers (500 ml each) within three 4 x 4 Latin squares (21-d periods). Added bulk equaled 25% of pretrial rumen volume for each cow. Objectives were to challenge cows with rumen fill in the form of dietary NDF and inert bulk to determine whether bulk affects intake similarly for diets of different NDF content or whether changes in behavior or rumen function allow cows to adapt to higher fill. Inert bulk had no effect on DMI for cows fed 25% NDF but d

Modulation of feeding behavior by central adropin injection in neonatal broiler chicks: evidence for NPY and melanocortin signaling pathways involvement.

BACKGROUND: Adropin, a peptide hormone encoded by the Energy Homeostasis Associated (Enho) gene, is involved in regulating food intake, energy homeostasis, and diverse metabolic functions; it is predominantly produced in the liver and brain and exerts its effects on both central and peripheral tissues. METHODS: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of intracerebroventricular (ICV) adropin administration on food intake and its interactions with NPY and melanocortin systems. This research encompassed 6 experiments organized into 4 distinct groups. In experiment 1, chickens received ICV inject

Does exposure to zinc, methomyl, and perfluorooctanoic acid alter feeding behavior on MUG® in the freshwater amphipod Gammarus fossarum?

Feeding rate alteration is one of the first observed responses when animals are exposed to toxic stress and is recognized as a relevant tool for studying chemical compounds toxicity. However, food substrates that are currently used for ecotoxicity tests are not always easily available compared with referenced products. Using the European freshwater amphipod Gammarus fossarum, we here propose a standardized food substrate fabricated with referenced ingredients: the MUG® (meal unit for gammarid) for ecotoxicity tests. To investigate the suitability of using MUG to study behavioral response of am

Perinatal exposure to tributyltin affects feeding behavior and expression of hypothalamic neuropeptide Y in the paraventricular nucleus of adult mice.

Organotins such as tributyltin chloride (TBT), are highly diffused environmental pollutants, which act as metabolism disrupting chemicals, i.e. may interfere with fat tissue differentiation, as well as with neuroendocrine circuits, thus impairing the control of energetic balance. We have previously demonstrated that adult exposure to TBT altered the expression of neuropeptides in the hypothalamus. In this study, we orally administered daily a solution containing oil, or TBT (0.25, 2.5, or 25 μg/kg body weight/day) to pregnant females from gestational day 8 until birth, and to their pups from d

Assessment of corn wet distillers grains fed to crossbred bulls on feeding behavior, rumen morphology, liver abscesses and blood parameters.

Corn ethanol production has been growing in Brazil in the last ten years, generating by-products to feedlot diets. This study evaluates the effects of the inclusion of low-fat corn wet distillers grains (LF-WDG) on feeding behavior, ruminal health, liver abscesses and blood parameters of F1 Angus-Nellore bulls feedlot finished. Our hypothesis is that evaluation of data from feeding behavior, rumen and liver health would help to explain animal performance. In this trail, one-hundred animals were fed for 129 days with diets containing amounts of 0 (control), 15, 30 and 45% of LF-WDG replacing co

Intake, performance, and feeding behavior of Holstein and Holstein × Gyr heifers grazing intensively managed tropical grasses during the rainy season.

Holstein × Gyr and Holstein are the primary dairy breeds used in tropical systems, but when rearing under pasture, feed intake, behavior, and performance might differ between them. This study aimed to evaluate the voluntary intake, nutrient digestibility, performance, and ingestive behavior of Holstein and Holstein × Gyr (½ Holstein × ½ Gyr) heifers managed in a rotational system of Guinea grass (Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Mombaça). The experiment was conducted during the summer season throughout four periods of 21 d. Two 8-heifers (four Holstein and four Holstein × Gyr) groups, averaging 258.6

Chronic immune challenge is detrimental to female survival, feeding behavior, and reproduction in the field cricket Gryllus assimilis (Fabricius, 1775).

Physiological trade-offs among expensive fitness-related traits, such as reproduction and immunity, are common in life histories of animals. An immune challenge can have different effects on female reproduction mediated by resource allocation and acquisition. In this study, employing a widely used method to challenge the insect immune system (nylon implant), we assessed the effects of mounting a chronic immune response simulating three successive immune assaults on survival and reproduction of mated females of Gryllus assimilis. We also verified feeding behavior following an implantation, whic

Vagal neuron expression of the microbiota-derived metabolite receptor, free fatty acid receptor (FFAR3), is necessary for normal feeding behavior.

OBJECTIVE: The vagus nerve provides a direct line of communication between the gut and the brain for proper regulation of energy balance and glucose homeostasis. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced via gut microbiota fermentation of dietary fiber have been proposed to regulate host metabolism and feeding behavior via the vagus nerve, but the molecular mechanisms have not yet been elucidated. We sought to identify the G-protein-coupled receptors within vagal neurons that mediate the physiological and therapeutic benefits of SCFAs. METHODS: SCFA, particularly propionate, signaling occurs v

Effect of chronic administration of tamoxifen and/or estradiol on feeding behavior, palatable food and metabolic parameters in ovariectomized rats.

Tamoxifen (TAM) is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) used in the treatment of breast cancer; however many women complain of weight gain during TAM treatment. The anorectic effects of estradiol (E) and TAM are well known, although the effects of E on the consumption of palatable food are controversial and there is no information regarding the effects of TAM on palatable food consumption. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic treatment with estradiol and/or tamoxifen on feeding behavior in ovariectomized rats exposed to standard chow and palatable foods (Fr

Effects of life stages and feeding regimes on active movement behavior of the tropical bed bug, Cimex hemipterus (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

This study examined the effects of different life stages (first, second, third, fourth, and five instars; adult females and adult males) and feeding regimes (starved and blood fed) on the active movement activity of the tropical bed bug, Cimex hemipterus (F.), under mixed-stage conditions. We used an extended arena made from Tygon tube coils and observed the movement frequency and movement distance at selected time intervals up to 120 h. The fifth instars and adult males and females showed significantly (P < 0.01) greater movement frequency compared with the other stages. The first and second

The effects of exogenous neuropeptide Y on feeding and sexual behavior in the red-sided garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis).

Actively courting adult male red-sided garter snakes were injected with one of two dosages of neuropeptide Y (NPY) or saline into the third cerebral ventricle. Courtship and feeding responses were assessed prior to surgery, 4-5 h and 24 h post-surgery. Feeding behavior was tested by the presentation of a favored food, an earthworm. NPY significantly reduced courtship behavior scores at both low (0.16 nmol) and high (0.77 nmol) doses 4-5 h after surgery. Snakes also took much longer to reach the criterion courtship score at the high dose. Feeding occurred only in snakes treated with NPY. At the

[Feeding behavior, rumination, reticulo-ruminal fermentation and plasma volatile fatty acids, compared in goats and sheep; influence of the diet].

Two-year old Alpine she-goats (n = 3) and Texel ewes (n = 3) were compared as to eating behaviour, rumination and volatile fatty acids (VFA) in rumen and blood. The animals were fed once daily with two different proportions (20 and 80%) of barley and hay. Dry matter intake was fixed at 48 g D.M/kg P0.75 per day. In similar feeding and environmental conditions, eating behaviour and rumination of goats and sheep did not differ much: the goats tended to eat faster and there were more rumination periods in the sheep. Effects of concentrate main carbohydrate type on methane emissions, milk production and feeding behavior in grazing late-lactation dairy cows.

Dairy production in temperate regions relies on herbage as the main source of feed and supplements are fed to cope with a decrease in herbage quality and quantity during summer. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effect of no supplementation or supplementation with high-starch, high-fiber, or mixed concentrates (50 starch:50 fiber) in grazing late lactation dairy cows on methane (CH4) emissions, milk production and feeding behavior. Seventy-two multiparous lactating dairy cows (Holstein-Friesian × Jersey; 206 ± 9.5 days in milk) were assigned to receive 0 kg/d of concentrat

Possible interaction of central noradrenergic, serotoninergic and oxytocin systems with nesfatin-1 induced hypophagia and feeding behavior in newborn broiler.

There are some differences between mammals and birds in terms of central food intake regulation. In avian species, the hypophagic role of nesfatin-1 has not been investigated with other neurotransmitters. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the alteration of feeding behavior following intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of nesfatin-1 and its possible interaction with central noradrenergic, serotoninergic, and oxytocin systems in newborn broiler chicks. In experiment 1, birds received ICV injection of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), prazosin (α1 receptors antagonist, 10 nmol), nesfati

The 5-HT2C receptor agonist lorcaserin reduces nicotine self-administration, discrimination, and reinstatement: relationship to feeding behavior and impulse control.

Lorcaserin ((1R)-8-chloro-1-methyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-3-benzazepine HCl) is a selective 5-HT(2C) receptor agonist with clinical efficacy in phase-III obesity trials. Based on evidence that this drug class also affects behaviors motivated by drug reinforcement, we compared the effect of lorcaserin on behavior maintained by food and nicotine reinforcement, as well as the stimulant and discriminative stimulus properties of nicotine in the rat. Acutely administered lorcaserin (0.3-3 mg/kg, subcutaneous (SC)) dose dependently reduced feeding induced by 22-h food deprivation or palatability. Effe

Acute central administration of immepip, a histamine H3 receptor agonist, suppresses hypothalamic histamine release and elicits feeding behavior in rats.

Histamine suppresses feeding behavior via histamine H1 receptors in the hypothalamus. This study was performed to examine whether the acute reduction of histamine release in the hypothalamus caused by immepip, a histamine H3 agonist, modulates the feeding behavior of rats. Rats had a catheter implanted in the third cerebral ventricle (i3v) and were given central injections of phosphate-buffered-saline or immepip (100-300 pmol/rat). Following the i3v administration of immepip, the rats developed dose-dependent hypokinesia within 10 min of administration. Next to hypokinesia, the rats showed sig

Key theoretical frameworks for intervention: understanding and promoting behavior change in parent-infant feeding choices in a low-income population.

The early introduction of solids to infants is a risk factor associated with later health problems including allergies, overweight, and diabetes. The Infant Feeding Series (TIFS), a newly designed curriculum that promotes the appropriate transition to solids through parenting education and behavior change among low-income mothers, used the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Transtheoretical Model of Change to develop TIFS curricular foci and activities. Using a pre-post design, pilot study results indicate that after exposure to the TIFS curriculum, mothers had significantly increased knowledg
