Finger injuries involving the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint are common, particularly among athletes. Injury severity is often underappreciated at initial presentation and may be dismissed broadly as a "jammed finger" injury. Delayed diagnosis and treatment of certain injuries can have an important impact on the patient's chance of regaining full function. Central slip and PIP volar plate injuries are frequently encountered injuries that, if left untreated, can lead to the permanent loss of function of the proximal interphalangeal joint. Despite the differing mechanisms of these 2 pathol

BACKGROUND: Very little has been published regarding the incidence of and duration of time lost after hand injuries in professional American football players.
HYPOTHESES: (1) Hand, first ray, and finger injuries in professional American football players represent a common cause of missed time from practice and game participation. (2) The effect of upper extremity injuries differs as a function of the anatomic site involved, injury type, and athlete's position.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiologic study.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all documented injuries to the hand, first ray, an

The ideal rehabilitation regimen of paediatric flexor tendon injuries of the hand is discussed controversially. In this study, the clinical outcome of paediatric patients with flexor tendon injuries treated with a dynamic postoperative protocol was assessed. All children with flexor tendon injuries of the hand who were treated by a dynamic postoperative protocol between 1999 and 2011 were included. Patients were invited for a follow-up examination consisting of clinical examination, the TAM and Buck-Gramcko scores, and the linear measurement system. In total, 144 patients (mean age 9.1 years,

BACKGROUND: Bony defects in finger injuries and infections impose high demands on their treatment due to the close anatomic relationships. Ideally, the injuries are entirely treated in emergency care. Due to the mechanism of the accident, contaminated and compromised soft tissues are often present and set limits to single-stage treatment. We present the long-term subjective and functional results after two-stage reconstruction of bony finger joint defect injuries.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Over a period of 15 years, a total of 40 patients with 43 fingers were treated due to a defect injury in the

UNLABELLED: Finger fractures are among the most common fractures of the upper limb. The number and cost of maltreated and misdiagnosed finger fractures in Sweden is unknown. The aim was to study the number, complications, causes, and cost of maltreated and misdiagnosed finger fractures, 2011-2021, in Sweden.Claims matching the prespecified ICD-10-SE codes S62.6-7 (finger fractures) and T92.2 (sequelae after finger fracture) during the 2011-2021 timeframe were identified. The data were extracted from the Swedish National Patient Insurance Company Register and analyzed in terms of epidemiology a

Hands basic function is to grasp, hold and manipulate items. Hand gesture is perhaps the most blatant example of non-verbal communication. Finger and partial finger amputations are most frequently encountered forms of partial hand loss. Common causes are traumatic injuries, congenital absence or malformations present great clinical challenges. In addition to immediate loss of grasp strength, finger absence may cause marked psychological trauma. Individuals who desire finger replacement usually have high expectation for the appearance of prosthesis. This clinical report portrays simple method t

Closed injuries affecting the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints and their stabilizers in the thumb and fingers occur very commonly in athletes, possibly leading to finger joint instability and long-standing or permanent disability. This article reviews the spectrum of joint injuries of the thumb and fingers that are common in the athletic population with a main focus on the ultrasound features of collateral ligament tears, palmar plate injuries, and thumb sesamoid fractures. A thorough understanding of the complex anatomy, mechanism of injury, soft tissue abnormalities, and imagin

BACKGROUND: The Minnesota Sentinel Event Notification System for Occupational Risks (SENSOR) has collected data on the nature, incidence, and cause of work-related amputation injuries that have taken place since 1992.
METHODS: SENSOR defined an amputation as any finger amputation or the loss of any other body part; 832 workers were identified as having amputation injuries between 1994 and 1995 and 72% of these workers completed telephone interviews.
RESULTS: The amputation injury rate for Minnesota workers was 39 per 100,000 workers, with agriculture and manufacturing having the highest rate

This scoping review examined the prevalence and characteristics of musculoskeletal injuries in rock climbing and identified existing knowledge and methodology gaps. The methodological guidance of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) was followed. Forty-five studies examining musculoskeletal injuries in rock climbing and climbing-specific training were included, encompassing climbers of various skill levels and age groups. The most common injuries were ligament sprains and muscle or tendon strains, particularly in the fingers, hands, ankles and shoulders. Finger pulley injuries were frequent in bo

Differential diagnosis of injuries caused by accidental slipping of the hand onto the blade of a knife includes self-inflicted injuries (e.g. to simulate an offense) as well as active and passive defense injuries indicative of the involvement of another party. The injury pattern on the hands of five perpetrators who suffered accidental cuts during knife attacks, as seen by the authors during the clinical forensic examination, is presented. The injuries were localized on the ulnar aspect of the thumb facing the index finger, the radial aspect of the index finger facing the thumb and variable si

PURPOSE: In patients with late brachial plexus birth injuries, sequelae after acute flaccid myelitis, or chronic adult brachial plexus injury, donor nerves for functioning muscle transplantation are often scarce. We present the results of a potential strategy using the phrenic nerve with staged free gracilis transplantation for upper extremity reanimation in these scenarios.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on an institutional database of brachial plexus injury or patients with palsy. All patients underwent a staged reconstruction in which the ipsilateral phrenic nerve was extend

BACKGROUND: The radial collateral ligament (RCL) is essential for metacarpophalangeal joint stability and plays a crucial part in pinch and grip strength of the index and long finger.
METHODS: This study compared treatment patterns and patient-reported outcomes for partial and complete RCL tears of the index and long finger. A database from six U.S. urban hospitals was reviewed for RCL injuries to the index or long finger between January 2004 and March 2022. Eligible patients were asked to complete the QuickDASH questionnaire. The injury-to-study inclusion interval showed a median of 5.7 year

Sharps and needlestick injuries are serious work-related injuries to the hand in healthcare workers (HCWs). We present two cases of HCWs with hand injuries from opening a medicinal glass ampoule. The index finger (IF) was involved in both cases, with an associated flexor tendon injury, presenting as inability to flex the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints. Sensation was intact, and radiographs showed no foreign body. The surgical repair of the flexor tendon injury was carried out using the Wide-awake Local Anaesthesia No Tourniquet technique. The quality of the repair was tested intraop

Volar plate injuries are typically caused by hyperextension of the proximal interphalangeal joint. These injuries are usually seen in sports where the ball comes in direct contact with the hands. Forceful dorsiflexion of the finger caused by the speeding ball leads to volar plate avulsion. In cricket, such finger injuries predominantly occur in fielders trying to catch or stop the speeding ball with bare hands. We report two unusual cases of volar plate avulsion injury occurring in batsmen that occurred during 'gully cricket' (street-cricket). We propose the possibility of a novel contrecoup-t

INTRODUCTION: Aim of the study was to elucidate epidemiological aspects and injury mechanisms in juvenile team handball.
METHOD: A standardized questionnaire was used to evaluate the injuries of 100 juvenile players (50 male, 50 female, year of birth 1982/83).
RESULTS: A total of 130 injuries were recorded of 73 players. Most of the injuries (73.1%) occurred between the age of 15 and 18. Approximately two thirds of the injuries (69.2%) occurred in a competition and most of them in an offensive situation. Backcourt players (29.0%), line players (27.5%), and goalkeepers (17.0%.) were the playe
