Finite element analysis of mandibular fracture fixation authenticated by 3D printed mandible mechanical testing.

Finite element analysis (FEA) for mandibular fracture fixation in craniomaxillofacial surgery remains promising but has been restricted due to the absence of an authenticated FEA model. This study aims to create an authenticated FEA model. This model was verified through a series of 3D printed mandible mechanical testing (3D-MMT) in a universal tensile machine using an indistinguishable set-up. Non-comminuted mandibular symphysis, parasymphysis, and angle fracture fixation stability were evaluated using a 2.0 mm 4-hole miniplate in three different plate configurations. Both FEA and 3D-MMT outc

Finite Element Analysis of Protective Measures against Lateral Hinge Fractures in High-Tibial Osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Opening wedge high-tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) is widely used for correcting mechanical axis deviations and offloading the medial compartment in unicompartmental osteoarthritis. However, lateral hinge fractures (LHFs) pose a significant complication. This study investigates protective measures to mitigate these fractures, guided by prior observations of mechanical stress impact on LHFs. PURPOSE: The study aims to assess the effectiveness of different protective measures, specifically the use of varying sizes of Kirchner wires and drill holes, in reducing the incidence of LHFs during

Effects of trimline cut in ankle foot orthosis: An experimental and finite element analysis.

An Ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) is a structure that spans from the lower leg to the foot and controls ankle joint movement. It prevents or assists the human body's lower leg and foot in replicating a normal human gait. The purpose of AFO is to achieve a stable gait by controlling the musculoskeletal system adequately. The mechanical features of AFO stiffness will play an essential role in helping gait, if this stiffness is not matching to the patient's conditions, gait will decrease and knee joint motion will be compromised. In general, trimline cut were introduced in the AFO medial and lateral s

Viscoelastic properties of porcine lenses using optical coherence elastography and inverse finite element analysis.

The mechanical properties of the crystalline lens are crucial in determining the changes in lens shape that occur during the accommodation process and are also a major factor in the development of the two most prevalent age-related diseases of the lens, presbyopia and cataracts. However, a comprehensive understanding of these properties is currently lacking. Previous methods for characterizing the mechanical properties of the lens have been limited by the amount of data that could be collected during each test and the lack of complex material modeling. These limitations were mainly caused by t

Screw Stress Distribution in a Clavicle Fracture with Plate Fixation: A Finite Element Analysis.

Clavicle midshaft fractures are mostly treated surgically by open internal reduction with a superior or anteroinferior plate and screws or by intramedullary nailing. Screw positioning plays a critical role in determining the stress distribution. There is a lack of data on the screw position and the appropriate number of cortices required for plate fixation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the mechanical behavior of an anterior plate implanted in a fractured bone subjected to 120° of lateral elevation compared to a healthy clavicle using numerical simulations. Effect of corrective stresses on rods in adult spinal deformity surgery-finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of rod fracture after corrective surgery for adult spinal deformity (ASD) is high. Although many reports have investigated the effects of rod bending considering postoperative body motion, and countermeasures, there are no reports investigating the effects during intraoperative correction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ASD correction on rods by using finite element analysis (FEA) based on the rod shape changes before and after spinal corrective fusion. METHODS: Five ASD patients (mean age 73 years, all female) who underwent thoracic to pe

Finite element analysis of trabecular bone microstructure using CT imaging and continuum mechanical modeling.

PURPOSE: Osteoporosis is a bone disease associated with enhanced bone loss, microstructural degeneration, and fracture-risk. Finite element (FE) modeling is used to estimate trabecular bone (Tb) modulus from high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) imaging modalities including micro-computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and high-resolution peripheral quantitative CT (HR-pQCT). This paper validates an application of voxel-based continuum finite element analysis (FEA) to predict Tb modulus from clinical CT imaging under a condition similar to in vivo imaging by comparing wit
