IMPORTANCE: Firearm suicide among females has increased in the past decade; routes for prevention remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To identify classes of firearm suicide decedents among females based on preceding mental and physical health-related risk factors for suicide.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional retrospective study of females who died by firearm suicide between January 2014 and December 2018 used state-based surveillance data from the National Violent Death Reporting System Restricted Access Database representing 1 or more years of data from all 50 US states, the D

Patients that survive firearm injuries frequently require follow-up care. This study aims to explore demographic characteristics of patients presenting to the emergency department for post-firearm injury care and to understand the reasons for their return visits. This was a retrospective chart review of all emergency department and readmission patient encounters for post-firearm injury care during the study period, January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2022, at an urban safety net hospital. Seventy-four patients with 84 corresponding emergency department encounters were included in the analysis. Key

Motor vehicle deaths have declined due to safety regulations and policies, but firearm deaths have not seen similar efforts or outcomes. No regulatory agencies focus on firearm safety and some laws prohibit liability for firearm manufacturers from firearm-related harm. Challenges to federal laws prohibiting sales of handguns to individuals under 21 years old may have important implications for suicides among 18-20 year-olds and for homicides in all ages. Secure firearm storage education and Community Violence Intervention programs are two strategies to reduce firearm-related injuries. Ongoing

CASE: A 21-year-old man presented with a femoral head (FH) fracture from a firearm injury. The FH had a comminuted, minimally displaced fracture with intertrochanteric extension and a retained bullet. This patient was treated with surgical hip dislocation (SHD) and open reduction internal fixation (ORIF). This case describes the operative management of a fracture pattern of the FH not covered within the Pipkin classification. The patient was noted to be progressing well at 1-year follow-up.
CONCLUSION: FH fractures from firearm injuries may present with unique fracture patterns. SHD and ORIF

Management of urethral sounding related injuries continues to be a challenge due to the wide breath of objects implicated, the rarity of cases, and chance of significant complication. We present a particularly challenging and novel case where a patient inserted a round of live ammunition into his urethra. Non-surgical removal was limited over concern for accidental discharge of the round, and the patient was taken to the operating room where open removal was performed. Psychiatric evaluation should be considered for cases where sounding injury requires surgical intervention, and a patient-cent

BACKGROUND: Firearm trauma remain a national crisis disproportionally impacting minority populations in the United States. Risk factors leading to unplanned readmission after firearm injury remain unclear. We hypothesized that socioeconomic factors have a major impact on unplanned readmission following assault-related firearm injury.
METHODS: The 2016-2019 Nationwide Readmission Database of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project was used to identify hospital admissions in those aged >14 years with assault-related firearm injury. Multivariable analysis assessed factors associated with unp

OBJECTIVE: Assess outcomes in survivors of firearm injuries after 6 to 12 months and compared them with a similarly injured trauma population.
BACKGROUND: For every individual in the United States who died of a firearm injury in 2017, three survived, living with the burden of their injury. Current firearm research largely focuses on mortality and short-term health outcomes, while neglecting the long-term consequences.
METHODS: We contacted adult patients with a moderate-to-severe injury from a firearm or motor vehicle crash (MVC) treated at 3 level I trauma centers in Boston between 2015 and

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: The United States (US) has the highest rate of firearm suicides in the world. The US and Canada are comparable countries with markedly different rates of firearm ownership, providing an opportunity to estimate suicide fatalities that could be averted in the US with a lower rate of firearm ownership.
METHODS: We compared 2016 US suicide fatality rates-standardized within fourteen sex-specific age groups to reflect the ethnic composition of Canada-to 2016 Canadian suicide rates. We then calculated the number and proportion of suicides that could be averted in the US

IMPORTANCE: If changes over time in trauma care apply to both firearm injuries and motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) similarly, differences in mechanism-specific case-fatality trends may suggest changes over time in injury severity.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze national trends in case-fatality percentages at levels I and II trauma centers for injuries due to MVC, firearm assault, self-inflicted firearm injury, and unintentional firearm injury by age and to analyze trends in injury severity scores (ISSs) and the percentage of out-of-hospital deaths by mechanism.

BACKGROUND: The morbidity and mortality associated with civilian firearm injury in developing countries is appreciable. The increasing incidence of gunshot casualties received in hospital emergency rooms is an emerging concern. The aim of this study was to determine the pattern and outcome of firearm injuries in a civilian setting of a developing country.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: This was a retrospective analysis of data on the entire patients with firearm injury received in the emergency room of Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki from January 2005 to December 2014.
RESULTS: There were 214 cas

Even though there have been previously published reports on firearm injuries in various countries, the incidence and pattern of death from firearm injuries in Thailand have not been studied before. In present study, 149 fatal firearm injuries from 2002 to 2011 were reviewed. At total of 7126 autopsies, fatal firearm injuries comprised of 2.09% (n = 149) of total autopsies cases. Among those victims, 136 were male (91.3%), 13 (8.7%) were female. The youngest age of victim was 10 years and the oldest was 79 years. Mean age of the victims was 33.79 years and median age was 30 years. Outdoor incid

Among a variety of uncommon firearms of different origin used worldwide, the trap gun used in Sri Lanka is underreported. This is an illegal, locally made, smooth-bore, long-barreled, muzzle-loading firearm with a victim-activated simple trigger mechanism. It is mainly used to protect crops and livestock from the potential harm by wild animals. Trap gun is mounted horizontally on pegs of sticks fixed to the ground. Miscellaneous metal pieces are used as ammunition. A small metal container filled with powdered matchstick heads/firecrackers covered by the striker surface of the matchstick box is

INTRODUCTION: Firearm injuries account for 13% to 17% of all spinal cord injuries, and are generally caused during warfare or assault with intent to kill. Spinal cord injuries caused by firearms are usually observed in patients aged 15 to 34 years old, and are especially common among men.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 28-year-old Iraqi man who was referred to our radiology department with lower limb paraplegia secondary to a gunshot wound. We performed 64-slice computerized tomography with two-dimensional and three-dimensional reconstruction of the thoracolumbar spine. On the two

Gun violence exposure (GVE) is associated with adverse mental health outcomes and firearm carrying. The extent to which community-led programs aimed at reducing violence counteract these effects is unknown. This study sought to examine (1) the relationships between GVE, anticipated risk of assault, psychological distress, and the perceived need to carry a firearm for protection and (2) whether awareness of community violence intervention (CVI) efforts in one's neighborhood moderates these associations. We used weighted survey data from a representative sample of 2,285 Detroit residents collect

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, 29 US states have adopted permitless carry laws, eliminating the requirement to obtain a permit before carrying a firearm in public. Prior research links these policy changes to increases in firearm violence, but less is known about how they relate to individual-level firearm behaviours and purchasing intentions.
METHODS: Using a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of firearm-owning and non-owning US adults conducted in the USA in 2024-2025 (n=18 251), we examined associations between state permitless carry laws and firearm ownership, carrying be

INTRODUCTION: Nonfatal firearm injuries are increasing nationwide. Survivors often experience physical disability, chronic pain, and psychological trauma requiring targeted interventions. Services available in the emergency department may differ from those provided upon admission. This study explored differences in services and healthcare utilization between patients with nonfatal firearm injuries admitted to hospital versus discharged from the emergency department.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of adults aged ≥18 years with nonfatal firearm injuries was conducted at a Level 1 Trauma

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal firearm violence claims approximately 15,000 lives annually in the USA. 5% of gun stores-known as 'trace stores'-account for 90% of firearms used in crimes. Oversight of these stores falls to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). However, the efficacy of ATF enforcement on reducing firearm-related violence remains understudied. This study evaluates the relationship between ATF interventions and local firearm crimes and assaults.
METHODS: Firearm assault and homicide data (June 2014 to January 2020) were collected from the local Police Department's Open

OBJECTIVES: Firearm injuries are a leading cause of pediatric mortality, but may not be adequately identified by International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes. Natural language processing (NLP) could improve identification. We derived an NLP model from medical narratives and compared the sensitivity and specificity of ICD codes and the NLP models to identify pediatric acute firearm injury (AFI).
METHODS: Retrospective study of ED visits by patients (aged 0 to 17 y) presenting to 7 pediatric emergency departments (ED) with a potential AFI between 2011 and 2019. A medical narrative revie

PurposeAs of 2019, firearm injury is the leading cause of death among children and adolescents. This study aims to investigate the association of race and ethnicity on the outcomes of pediatric firearm injury patients.MethodsFirearm injuries among patients ages 0-17 years in 2016 and 2019 were identified using the Kids' Inpatient Database, the largest database for the United States inpatient pediatric population representing 70-80% of all pediatric hospitalizations nationwide. Race and ethnicity were the primary independent variables, and the primary outcome was a composite variable of in-hosp
