Hepatitis A Outbreak Associated with Cuba - Florida, June 2024-February 2026.

Beginning in early 2025, Florida Department of Health (FDOH) staff members noted an unusually high proportion of reported hepatitis A cases among travelers who had recently been in Cuba. Hepatitis A outbreaks have been reported in Cuban local news media; however, government reports are limited. FDOH investigated to characterize hepatitis A cases associated with travel to Cuba among Florida residents (including four patients who had recently emigrated from Cuba). FDOH found that among 249 confirmed hepatitis A cases identified during June 2024-February 2026, 76 (31%) patients reported recent tr

Chronic Viral Hepatitis Screening Inequities Across Florida Federally Qualified Health Centers.

AIM: Examine racial and ethnic inequities in hepatitis C and B virus (HCV and HBV) screening across high-risk populations. SUBJECT AND METHODS: Chronic HCV and HBV infections can lead to cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and death. Despite universal screening recommendations, < 50% of US adults are tested for these viruses. Populations with lower socio-economic status experience higher rates of viral-related cirrhosis and HCC, which may be reduced through screening and treatment. This study analyzed data from 91,875 patients (2019-2021) at the Health Choice Network, a federally quali

Salmonella enterica Infection of Synanthropic Non-native Geckos in Southern Florida.

Wild geckos are a significant source of human salmonellosis. We swabbed the cloacas of 37 non-native synanthropic geckos (Gekko gecko, n = 16; Phelsuma grandis, n = 21) from southern Florida, USA, and assayed swab DNA extracts using quantitative polymerase chain reaction of the invA gene. Salmonella enterica was detected in both species with a pooled prevalence of 13.5% (5/37; 95% CI 5.3-27.1%), indicating the potential for zoonotic transmission. Implications for human health in the region are discussed.

Ensemble ecological niche modeling of West Nile virus probability in Florida.

Ecological Niche Modeling is a process by which spatiotemporal, climatic, and environmental data are analyzed to predict the distribution of an organism. Using this process, an ensemble ecological niche model for West Nile virus habitat prediction in the state of Florida was developed. This model was created through the weighted averaging of three separate machine learning models-boosted regression tree, random forest, and maximum entropy-developed for this study using sentinel chicken surveillance and remote sensing data. Variable importance differed among the models. The highest variable per

Reductions in prescription opioid diversion following recent legislative interventions in Florida.

PURPOSE: Florida has been at the center of the nation's ongoing prescription opioid epidemic, with largely unregulated pain clinics and lax prescribing oversight cited as significant contributors to the opioid problem in the state. METHODS: In an effort to mitigate prescription opioid abuse and diversion in Florida, legislative interventions were implemented during 2010 and 2011, which included two primary elements: (i) comprehensive legislation to better regulate the operation of pain clinics; and (ii) a statewide prescription drug monitoring program to promote safer prescribing practices. Flea species infesting dogs in Florida and Bartonella spp. prevalence rates.

Several Bartonella spp. associated with fleas can induce a variety of clinical syndromes in both dogs and humans. However, few studies have investigated the prevalence of Bartonella in the blood of dogs and their fleas. The objectives of this study were to determine the genera of fleas infesting shelter dogs in Florida, the prevalence of Bartonella spp. within the fleas, and the prevalence of Bartonella spp. within the blood of healthy dogs from which the fleas were collected. Fleas, serum, and EDTA-anti-coagulated whole blood were collected from 80 healthy dogs, and total DNA was extracted fo

Seasonal reproductive patterns of female Gambusia holbrooki from two Florida lakes.

Lake Apopka in central Florida (USA) is significantly contaminated with a variety of chemicals including anthropogenic nutrients, organochlorine pesticides like dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), and multiple congeners of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Our laboratory has previously documented a number of reproductive abnormalities in alligators from Lake Apopka, compared with alligators captured from Lake Woodruff, a nearby reference lake. We conducted the present study to investigate if another native vertebrate, Gambusia holbrooki (eastern mo

Literature Review of Florida Red Tide: Implications for Human Health Effects.

Florida red tides are a natural phenomenon caused by dense aggregations of single cell or several species of unicellular organisms. Patches of discolored water, dead or dying fish, and respiratory irritants in the air often characterize these algal blooms. In humans, two distinct clinical entities, depending on the route of exposure, are associated with exposure to the Florida red tide toxins (particularly the brevetoxins). With the ingestion of brevetoxin-contaminated shellfish, neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP) presents as a milder gastroenteritis with neurologic symptoms compared with ot

Antibodies to St. Louis encephalitis virus in armadillos from southern Florida.

From January 1990 through March 1991, 189 armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) were collected from Brevard and Glades Counties in southern Florida (USA). The sera were analyzed for hemagglutination-inhibition (HAI) antibodies against St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) and eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) viruses. None of the armadillos had detectable HAI antibody to EEE virus, but 59 (31%) had antibodies against SLE virus. Sera from 31 of the HAI-positive armadillos contained significant levels of neutralizing (NT) antibody to SLE virus. Armadillos captured during the 1990 SLE human epidemic in s

Isolation of eastern equine encephalitis virus from Aedes albopictus in Florida.

Fourteen strains of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus were isolated from Aedes albopictus mosquitoes collected in Polk County, Florida. These are the first isolations of an arbovirus of proven public health and veterinary importance from naturally infected Ae. albopictus in the United States since established populations of this introduced mosquito were first discovered in 1985. The widespread distribution of Ae. albopictus in Florida and in other areas of the United States where EEE is endemic raises concern that this species may become an epizootic and epidemic vector of EEE virus.

Methylxanthine Exposure in the American White Ibis (Eudocimus albus) in Florida, USA.

Naturally occurring methylxanthines (MTXs) are plant-derived alkaloids, including caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline. Common sources of these compounds are coffee, chocolate, and tea. Methylxanthine toxicosis has been frequently described in domestic dogs and pet birds, but few reports exist for free-ranging wildlife species. From November 2019 through November 2020, we evaluated 24 American White Ibis (Eudocimus albus) and one Yellow-crowned Night Heron (Nyctanassa violacea) collected from morbidity and mortality events along the Atlantic coast of Florida, USA. A Florida-Based Analysis of Bowel Surgery Outcomes: Does Income Predict Recovery?

Major small and large bowel surgeries are commonly performed in the United States (U.S.) for conditions that are associated with colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and bowel obstruction. Factors such as hospital length of stay (LOS) and postoperative readmission rates are among the many outcome measures that could serve as markers for evaluating surgical effectiveness and the risk of complications. Additionally, socioeconomic status (SES) has been widely used as a predictor of postoperative outcomes across medical disciplines. Meanwhile, the relationship between hospital LOS, readm
