No evidence for African swine fever virus DNA in haematophagous arthropods collected at wild boar baiting sites in Estonia.

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly pathogenic viral disease affecting all Suidae, with Ornithodoros moubata complex soft ticks acting as the biological arthropod vectors of the causative agent, African swine fever virus (ASFV). While ASFV is also transmissible via direct contact, pig products and fomites, other arthropods may be involved in virus transmission and persistence. Therefore, we checked various groups of blood-feeding arthropods collected during summer 2017 in wild boar habitats on the Estonian Island of Saaremaa for the presence of ASFV. Saaremaa had the highest ASF infection pr

Infection prevention and control in deployed military medical treatment facilities.

Infections have complicated the care of combat casualties throughout history and were at one time considered part of the natural history of combat trauma. Personnel who survived to reach medical care were expected to develop and possibly succumb to infections during their care in military hospitals. Initial care of war wounds continues to focus on rapid surgical care with debridement and irrigation, aimed at preventing local infection and sepsis with bacteria from the environment (e.g., clostridial gangrene) or the casualty's own flora. Over the past 150 years, with the revelation that pathoge

Potential biodefense model applications for portable chlorine dioxide gas production.

Development of decontamination methods and strategies to address potential infectious disease outbreaks and bioterrorism events are pertinent to this nation's biodefense strategies and general biosecurity. Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) gas has a history of use as a decontamination agent in response to an act of bioterrorism. However, the more widespread use of ClO2 gas to meet current and unforeseen decontamination needs has been hampered because the gas is too unstable for shipment and must be prepared at the application site. Newer technology allows for easy, onsite gas generation without the need

Dementia-specific risks of scabies: retrospective epidemiologic analysis of an unveiled nosocomial outbreak in Japan from 1989-90.

BACKGROUND: Although senile dementia patients in long-term care facilities are at leading risk of scabies, the epidemiologic characteristics of this disease have yet to be fully clarified. This study documents the findings of a ward-scale nosocomial outbreak in western Japan from 1989-90, for which permission to publish was only recently obtained. METHODS: A retrospective epidemiologic study was performed to identify specific risk factors of scabies among patients with dementia. Analyses were based on a review of medical and nursing records. All inpatients in the affected ward at the time of

Eruptive inflammatory tinea corporis: a case report highlighting the role of molecular testing on formalin-fixed tissue in confirming the causative species.

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytosis is a fungal skin infection most commonly caused by members of the genera Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton, though there are 7 genera currently described including Arthroderma, Nannizzia, Paraphyton and Lophophyton. These filamentous fungi survive in the stratum corneum of the hair, skin, or nails of their host by metabolizing keratin. Dermatophyte skin infections can be acquired from direct contact with the skin of infected individuals or animals, fomite transmission, contaminated soil, or autoinfection from other infected body sites. These fungal skin

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of the Philippine general public towards human mpox (hMPX): a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: In the Philippines, research on knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding human mpox (hMPX) remains limited, despite rising case numbers. With vaccines unavailable locally, enhancing community awareness and promoting non-pharmaceutical interventions are crucial for reducing transmission risks. METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilized an anonymized online data collection tool to explore the general public's hMPX KAP and their relationships, and identify sociodemographic groups linked to low hMPX knowledge; 502 respondents were included in the analysis. RESULTS: Kno

Human-Centered Design to Respond to Public Health Crises: Maintaining Canine Rabies Vaccination during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Peru.

In the early coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, limited understanding of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 transmission and fears of infection hindered mass dog vaccination efforts in dog rabies-affected areas. Interruption of dog rabies vaccination campaigns could lead to a rapid increase in the risk of human rabies. To address these challenges, we applied human-centered design (HCD) principles to develop a vaccination strategy that prioritizes safety while ensuring dog rabies vaccination continuity in Arequipa, Peru, a rabies-affected area. We describe the process of rapid prot

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Secondary to Enterovirus-Human-Rhinovirus Infection in an Adult.

Enterovirus-human-rhinovirus (EV-HRV) are small RNA viruses that are airborne and can spread by direct contact or fomites and usually cause the common cold, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation. EV-HRV-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is common in children but is a rare cause of ARDS in adults. ARDS is defined according to the Berlin criteria and can be mild, moderate or severe depending on the PaO 2 to FiO2 ratio. We report a case of a 70-year-old female with cardiac comorbidities, emphysema, second-hand smoking of 25 years, on methotrexate for rh

Disease History, Pathogenesis, Diagnostics, and Therapeutics for Human Monkeypox Disease: A Comprehensive Review.

The monkeypox disease is a zoonotic-infectious disease that transmits between animals and humans. It is caused by a double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Orthopoxvirus genus that is closely related to the variola virus -the causative agent of smallpox. Although monkeypox infections were endemic to Western and Central Africa, the newly emerging monkeypox outbreak spread to more than 90 non-African countries. With the exception of the PCR-confirmed case of a return from Nigeria to the United Kingdom, the ongoing outbreak is largely unrelated to travel. In the most recent wave, cases are cha

Monkeypox: the resurgence of forgotten things.

Monkeypox, a rare zoonotic disease, is primarily prevalent in Central and Western Africa. However, monkeypox is emerging as a worldwide concern due to the 2022 monkeypox outbreak, which is the first instance of widespread community transmission outside Africa. Monkeypox is caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus and presents as a vesicular-pustular disease that may be preceded by fever, malaise, and other constitutional symptoms. If present, lymphadenopathy may distinguish it from chickenpox or smallpox. However, contrary to previous manifestations, most monkeyp

Efficacy of disinfectants for inactivation of Ebola virus in suspension by integrated cell culture coupled with real-time RT-PCR.

BACKGROUND: Ebola virus can be transmitted by contact with environmental surfaces (fomites) contaminated with secretions and excretions from infected individuals. Due to their potential to cause a public health emergency and the absence of efficacious drugs and vaccines, a crucial intervention may involve the use of an effective virucidal agent for disinfecting contaminated surfaces. AIM: To evaluate the virucidal efficacy of three disinfectants against Ebola virus: Micro-Chem Plus detergent disinfectant cleaner (MCP), FWD, and ethanol; in suspension tests according to the Technical Standard

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 and Dentistry: A Summative Review of Guidelines issued by National Health Authorities.

COVID-19 was first reported in China, in November 2019 and since then the spread of this disease was so rapid that on March 11, 2020, it was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. Due to the high transmissibility of the COVID virus and the associated morbidity and mortality, various International and National health authorities released different guidelines for day-to-day living, laying down "new norms" which has impacted our lives enormously. Although these guidelines seem to be convoluted but owing to some differences in the guidelines, it raises an ambiguity in the minds of d

Physiology to Disease Transmission of Respiratory Tract Infection: A Narrative Review.

INTRODUCTION: In the current scenario of the COVID 19 pandemic, the protective reflexes, namely sneeze and cough, have received great importance. However, it is not in terms of protection but in terms of the spread of infection. The present review tries to bring out the correlation between the physiology of sneeze and cough, taking into consideration the various receptors that initiate the two reflexes, then correlating it with the formation of expelled droplets and the significance of various aspects of droplets that lead to the spread of infection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For the compilation

Broad-range lytic bacteriophages that kill Staphylococcus aureus local field strains.

Staphylococcus aureus is a very successful opportunistic pathogen capable of causing a variety of diseases ranging from mild skin infections to life-threatening sepsis, meningitis and pneumonia. Its ability to display numerous virulence mechanisms matches its skill to display resistance to several antibiotics, including β-lactams, underscoring the fact that new anti-S. aureus drugs are urgently required. In this scenario, the utilization of lytic bacteriophages that kill bacteria in a genus -or even species- specific way, has become an attractive field of study. In this report, we describe the

Management of a Trichophyton tonsurans outbreak in a day-care center.

Trichophyton tonsurans is the leading cause of tinea capitis in the United Kingdom (UK) as well as causing tinea corporis. This organism has been linked to several outbreaks in the UK and abroad, and such outbreaks may be prolonged since T. tonsurans can be difficult to control. There remains an incomplete consensus in the literature on the optimal management of such outbreaks of this infection. Following notification that a child with T. tonsurans was identified at a day-care center in the UK, initial investigations identified nine cases of fungal infection involving children and staff over t

Swine origin influenza (swine flu).

Swine origin influenza was first recognized in the border area of Mexico and United States in April 2009 and during a short span of two months became the first pandemic. The currently circulating strain of swine origin influenza virus of the H1N1 strain has undergone triple reassortment and contains genes from the avian, swine and human viruses. It is transmitted by droplets or fomites. Incubation period is 2 to 7 days. Common clinical symptoms are indistinguishable by any viral respiratory illness, and include fever, cough, sore throat and myalgia. A feature seen more frequently with swine or
