Stroke often results in long-term and severe limb dysfunction for a majority of patients, significantly limiting their activities and social participation. Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) is a rehabilitation approach aimed explicitly at enhancing upper limb motor function following a stroke. However, the precise mechanism remains unknown. This study explores how CIMT may alleviate forelimb paralysis in ischemic mice, potentially through structural and functional remodeling of brain regions beyond the infarct area, especially the contralateral cortex. We demonstrated that CIMT recrui

A 13-year-old Morgan gelding was examined for right forelimb lameness and tenosynovitis of the right common carpal sheath of the digital flexor tendons. The horse had moderate right forelimb lameness at the trot and marked effusion of the right common carpal sheath of the digital flexor tendons. Ultrasonographic examination revealed a soft tissue mass within the proximal pouch of the affected tendon sheath, located adjacent to the distal physis of the radius. Cytology and culture of the fluid revealed a sterile, eosinophilic tenosynovitis. Tenoscopic exploration confirmed the presence of a cap

The seas of the Mesozoic (266-66 Myr ago) were remarkable for predatory marine reptiles, but their modes of locomotion have been debated. One problem has been the absence of tracks, although there is no reason to expect that swimmers would produce tracks. We report here seabed tracks made by Mesozoic marine reptiles, produced by the paddles of nothosaurs (Reptilia, Sauropterygia) in the Middle Triassic of the Luoping localities in Yunnan, southwestern China. These show that the track-making nothosaurs used their forelimbs for propulsion, they generally rowed (both forelimbs operating in unison

Lameness, which arises from functional or structural changes in the limbs or axial skeleton, causes asymmetry in the movement of the equine head and/or pelvis. This study aimed to investigate the lameness patterns of horses that underwent lameness examination or monitoring during the years 2016 to 2020. This retrospective study used data from the lameness examination, evaluated using an objective assessment with body-mounted wireless inertial sensors. The lameness examination comprised clinical history, static inspection, palpation, gait evaluation (for which the animals were equipped with a w

We examined whether a sympathetic cholinergic mechanism contributed to increased blood flow of the exercising muscle at the onset of voluntary static exercise in conscious cats. After six cats were operantly conditioned to perform static bar press exercise with a forelimb while maintaining a sitting posture, a Transonic or pulsed Doppler flow probe was implanted on the brachial artery of the exercising forelimb, and catheters were inserted into the left carotid artery and jugular vein. After the baseline brachial blood flow and vascular conductance decreased and became stable in progress of po

The somatotopic distribution of dorsal column nuclear projections within the basilar pontine gray was examined in relation to the massive corticopontine projection system that emanates most heavily from motor and somatosensory cortex. The distribution patterns of these two systems were compared by combining autoradiographic and degeneration axonal tracing methods within individual animals. Stereotaxic injections of tritiated leucine (50 microCi/microliter) and lesions by aspiration were made in animals under ketamine hydrochloride anesthesia. The forelimb cortical injections (0.1-0.3 microlite

CdSO4 and acetazolamide each induce postaxial ectrodactyly in rodents when administered at a critical time in forelimb development. C57BL/6J mice are extremely sensitive to the teratogenic action of both agents, whereas SWV mice are relatively resistant. Additionally, both of these agents can inhibit carbonic anhydrase. In the present study administration of CdSO4 and acetazolamide in combination to either strain of mice potentiates the incidence of forelimb ectrodactyly. These results, in combination with the aforementioned similarities of teratogenesis, suggest a common mechanism of teratoge

BACKGROUND: The Southern Karaman sheep, which is very fertile in terms of meat and milk production and is often preferred in livestock raising, is known as a domestic sheep breed. The Hasak sheep is a breed formed by the triple crossbreeding of the German Black-headed, Hampshire and Akkaraman breeds. Arterial feeding of the forelimb is provided by arteria axillaris, a continuation of arteria subclavia. In this study, it was aimed to examine the forelimb arteries in Southern Karaman and Hasak sheep breeds.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Totally, 8 Southern Karaman and 8 Hasak sheep were obtained from

In the present study, we used microelectrode recordings of multiunit responses to evaluate patterns of the reactivation of somatosensory cortex after sensory loss produced by spinal cord lesions in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). These New World monkeys have become a popular model in studies of cortical organization and function. Primary somatosensory cortex and adjoining somatosensory areas can become extensively deactivated by lesions of somatosensory afferents as they ascend in the dorsal columns of the cervical spinal cord. Six to 7 weeks after complete lesions of the cuneate fas

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the ligamentous lumbar vertebral column of a macaque could potentially provide passive mechanical support to the weight of the head, upper body and forelimbs during upright sitting. The seated flexed curvature of the lumbar spine of Macaca sylvana was estimated from a photograph and was partitioned equally among the lumbar-lumbar intervertebral joints. This flexed curvature was compared with the hyper-extended profile of the unloaded excised ligamentous spine of a related species (Macaca fascicularis) and used to calculate changes in interverteb

Due to its large gyrencephalic brain, the pig is increasingly used for neuroscience research, especially for the preclinical testing of novel neuroprostheses. However, our understanding of the pig's motor system remains limited compared with the common species used for neuroscience research. Here, we aimed to characterize the forelimb and hindlimb representation of the pig motor cortex using intracortical microstimulation (ICMS). Three domestic pigs (Sus scrofa) were placed in a modified stereotactic frame and maintained under intravenous propofol sedation. We mapped the motor cortex using ICM

Motor rehabilitation strategies after unilateral stroke suggest that the immobilization of the healthy, unimpaired limb can promote the functional recovery of a paretic limb. In rodents, this has been modeled using casts, harnesses, and other means of restricting the use of the non-paretic forelimb in models of experimental stroke. Here, we evaluated an alternative approach, using botulinum toxin injections to limit the function of the non-paretic forelimb. Adult male rats were subjected to permanent ligation of the left distal middle cerebral artery, resulting in right forelimb paresis. The r

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is increasingly being used for Parkinson's disease (PD); however, the evaluation of its clinical impact remains complex owing to the heterogeneity of patients and treatments. Therefore, we used a unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine-induced PD rat model to investigate whether anodal tDCS of the primary motor cortex (M1) alleviates PD motor deficits. Before tDCS treatment, unilateral PD rats preferentially used the forelimb ipsilateral to the lesion in the exploratory cylinder test and showed reduced locomotor activity in the open field test. In addition,

Pairing vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) with rehabilitation has emerged as a potential strategy to improve recovery after neurological injury, an effect ascribed to VNS-dependent enhancement of synaptic plasticity. Previous studies demonstrate that pairing VNS with forelimb training increases forelimb movement representations in motor cortex. However, it is not known whether VNS-dependent enhancement of plasticity is restricted to forelimb training or whether VNS paired with other movements could induce plasticity of other motor representations. We tested the hypothesis that VNS paired with orof

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that motor training may be beneficial for slowing the onset of motor impairments in Parkinson's disease (PD).
OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of targeted rehabilitation on limb motor and cranial motor function and the corresponding corticospinal and corticobulbar circuits in a rodent model of PD.
METHODS: Baseline performance of limb (reaching) and cranial (licking) motor function were established prior to and 6 weeks following unilateral intrastriatal 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) infusions. Animals then received 6 weeks of limb motor rehabilitation (LMR)

Because all-trans retinoic acid (atRA) is teratogenic in all species tested and many of the specific defects induced are common across the phylogenetic spectrum, it would be logical to predict that murine strain differences in teratology to this agent are minimal. However, for specific defects, strain susceptibilities are vastly different. Studies with atRA have shown stark differences between C57BL/6 and SWV mouse strains in susceptibility to postaxial forelimb ectrodactyly and ectopic hindlimb formation, with the C57 strain being more susceptible for both defects. Various approaches were use

Six monkeys subjected to forelimb deafferentation on day of birth (two blinded and four not blinded) spontaneously developed use of the affected limbs for support of body weight, ambulation, and clasping objects. The sighted animals also used them for climbing and reaching toward objects. Thumb-forefinger prehension did not emerge spontaneously but could be brought into existence through training. In another series of experiments, 5 of 11 monkey fetuses, exteriorized two-thirds of the way through gestation and given forelimb deafferentation, survived through caesarian delivery and at least 5 m

Static posturography is widely used to assess postural stability in dogs. Considerable methodological variation exists regarding whether center of pressure (COP) parameters are derived from whole-body, forelimb-, or hindlimb-based measurements and whether values are expressed as absolute or base of support (BOS)-normalised parameters. The aims were to examine the associations between whole-body, forelimb-, and hindlimb-based COP measurements in standing dogs and to evaluate the effect of BOS normalisation on agreement between these measurement approaches. Static posturography was performed in

Minipigs are used as in vivo endovascular models, particularly in stroke and aneurysm research. However, detailed knowledge of the diameters of forelimb arteries that are commonly used as surrogates for human brain-supplying arteries are lacking. This study aimed to determine the diameters of forelimb and neck arteries in Aachen minipigs and to compare those to the diameters of human cerebral brain-supplying arteries in order to assess the validity of the Aachen minipig as a human intracranial in vivo model. We measured the diameters in the external carotid artery and eight different branches

The relative numbers and locations of neurons projecting to the "forelimb" region of the precentral motor cortex were studied in three monkeys by using the retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase. Within the forelimb area of the motor cortex itself, there are extensive and profuse interconnections. However, regions within this area receive afferents from very few neurons in other parts of the motor cortex representing hindlimb or head movements. Most of the motor cortical representation of the forelimb in the anterior bank of the central sulcus is devoid of callosal connections. In both
