Pediatric Hodgkin's disease: pulmonary, cardiac, and thyroid function following combined modality therapy.

Since pediatric Hodgkin's disease is a curable malignancy, it is essential to limit treatment sequelae. This study examines post-treatment pulmonary, cardiac, and thyroid function in 34 children, ages 5 to 17 (23 male and 11 female) with Hodgkin's disease. All received combined modality therapy of 6 cycles of alternating ABVD/MOPP chemotherapy and low dose (1500-2500 cGy) involved field radiotherapy. Mean follow-up period is 27.5 months with actuarial freedom from relapse of 94% and survival of 92%. Twenty asymptomatic patients underwent pulmonary function testing following chemotherapy and su

Analysis of Permeation and Diffusion Coefficients to Infer Aging Attributes in Polymers Subjected to Supercritical CO2 and H2 Gas at High Pressures.

There is a need to understand the permeation flux behavior of polymers exposed to high-pressure and -temperature fluids continuously for long time intervals. This study investigates evidence of structural alterations in polymer specimens as indicators of material aging through the monitoring of transport coefficients at pressure steps from 10 barg to 400 barg and temperatures ranging between 30 °C and 90 °C. The continuous flow permeation methodology is a well-established technique described in the literature for applications from membrane separation processes to polymeric pressure barriers us

[Rapid screening of 14 antibacterial drugs in anti-acne cosmetics using ion mobility spectrometry coupled with solid-phase extraction].

The main methods currently used to detect illegally added chemicals in cosmetics include thin-layer chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Compared with other analytical techniques, these methods have the advantages of high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, all of which are required in practical detection work. However, they also present a number of limitations, such as long analysis times and requirements for skilled operators and strictly controlled laboratory environments. Supervision

Bifunctional Iminophosphorane Superbase Catalysis: Applications in Organic Synthesis.

To improve the field of catalysis, there is a substantial and growing need for novel high-performance catalysts providing new reactivity. To date, however, the set of reactions that can be reliably performed to prepare chiral compounds in largely one enantiomeric form using chiral catalysts still represents a small fraction of the toolkit of known transformations. In this context, chiral Brønsted bases have played an expanding role in catalyzing enantioselective reactions between various carbon- and heteroatom-centered acids and a host of electrophilic reagents. This Account describes our rece

Biomedical engineer's guide to the clinical aspects of intensive care mechanical ventilation.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical ventilation is an essential therapy to support critically ill respiratory failure patients. Current standards of care consist of generalised approaches, such as the use of positive end expiratory pressure to inspired oxygen fraction (PEEP-FiO2) tables, which fail to account for the inter- and intra-patient variability between and within patients. The benefits of higher or lower tidal volume, PEEP, and other settings are highly debated and no consensus has been reached. Moreover, clinicians implicitly account for patient-specific factors such as disease condition and prog

Segmentation of Coronary Arteries Images Using Spatio-temporal Feature Fusion Network with Combo Loss.

PURPOSE: Coronary heart disease is a serious disease that endangers human health and life. In recent years, the incidence and mortality of coronary heart disease have increased rapidly. The quantification of the coronary artery is critical in diagnosing coronary heart disease. METHODS: In this paper, we improve the coronary arteries segmentation performance from two aspects of network model and algorithm. We proposed a U-shaped network based on spatio-temporal feature fusion structure to segment coronary arteries from 2D slices of computed tomography angiography (CTA) heart images. The spatio

Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Evaluation of Pulmonary Transit Time and Blood Volume in Adult Congenital Heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Management of adults with repaired congenital heart disease (CHD) is still challenging. Heart failure secondary to residual anatomical sequels or arrhythmic events is not rare in this population. MRI has emerged as an accurate tool to quantify pulmonary transit time (PTT) of intravenous contrast agents and pulmonary blood volume (PBV). PURPOSE: To determine the relationship between PTT, and conventional indexes of ventricular dysfunction and heart failure in a cohort of adults with CHD and to assess its association with adverse outcomes. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. SUBJECTS: 89 a

Extracellular volume with bolus-only technique in amyloidosis patients: Diagnostic accuracy, correlation with other clinical cardiac measures, and ability to track changes in amyloid load over time.

BACKGROUND: Extracellular volume (ECV) by T1 mapping requires the contrast agent distribution to be at equilibrium. This can be achieved either definitively with a primed contrast infusion (infusion ECV), or sufficiently with a delay postbolus (bolus-only ECV). For large ECV, the bolus-only approach measures higher than the infusion ECV, causing some uncertainty in diseases such as amyloidosis. PURPOSE: To characterize the relationship between the bolus-only and current gold-standard infusion ECV in patients with amyloidosis. STUDY TYPE: Bolus-only and infusion ECV were prospectively measure

Image cytometry and kinetic modelling reveal amendment-associated differences in microbial cell state and apparent PAH degradation potential.

Organic amendments are widely applied to enhance bioremediation of PAH-contaminated soils; however, remediation performance varies with amendment dosage, and the mechanisms linking dose, microbial physiological state, and degradation kinetics remain unclear. This study integrated kinetic modelling with imaging-enabled cytometry and machine learning to evaluate how aged leaf-biomass amendment is associated with microbial cell-state profiles and apparent PAH degradation potential. PAH-contaminated soil containing phenanthrene and pyrene (249.15 mg kg⁻¹ combined) was amended with pine-poplar leaf

Post-Peak Cooling Rate Is Strongly Associated with Layer-Resolved Porosity Evolution in Hybrid WAAM-FSP Al 4043 Multi-Layer Walls.

In hybrid wire arc additive manufacturing with interlayer friction stir processing (UAMFSP), refined microstructures are produced in aluminum alloy builds; however, the thermal parameters governing layer-resolved defect evolution remain poorly understood. In this study, a correlative mechanistic framework is presented in which post-peak cooling rate is identified as a plausible controlling factor for porosity evolution in UAMFSP Al 4043 three-layer walls. A multi-scale characterization is performed by employing infrared thermography, quantitative optical grain morphology analysis (N  =  10,346

Multiparametric MR Imaging for Detecting Early Chronic Kidney Disease and Grading Chronic Pathological Changes.

BACKGROUND: Conventional renal function markers, such as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), often fail to reflect occult renal parenchymal injury in early-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD). Renal biopsy is invasive, limiting longitudinal monitoring. Reliable noninvasive methods for early CKD detection and chronicity assessment are lacking. PURPOSE: To evaluate 3D MR elastography (3D-MRE), arterial spin labeling (ASL), and intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging (IVIM-DWI) for detecting early CKD and grading its chronic changes. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. SUBJECTS: 9

MR Assessment of Acute Changes of Cerebral Perfusion, Metabolism, and Blood-Brain Barrier Permeability in Response to Aerobic Exercise.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear how a single bout of exercise affects brain perfusion, oxygen metabolism, and blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability. Addressing this unresolved issue is essential to understand the acute changes in cerebral physiology induced by aerobic exercise. PURPOSE: To dynamically monitor the acute changes in cerebral physiology subsequent to a single aerobic exercise training session using noninvasive MRI measurements. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. POPULATION: Twenty-three healthy participants (18-35 years, 10 females/13 males) were enrolled and divided into 10-minute exerc

Umbilical cord blood-derived exosomes attenuate dopaminergic neuron damage of Parkinson's disease mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is a rich source of multifunctional stem cells characterized by low immunogenicity. Recent research in the fields of aging and regenerative medicine has revealed the potential of human umbilical cord blood-derived exosomes (UCB-Exos) in promoting wound healing, anti-aging, and regeneration. However, their role in neurodegenerative diseases, specifically Parkinson's disease (PD), remains unexplored. This study investigates the potential therapeutic effects and underlying mechanisms of UCB-Exos on PD. METHODS: Large extracellular vesicles (LEv), Exos, and

The inactivation of sodium channels in the node of Ranvier and its chemical modification.

The many experimental studies reported demonstrate the complexity of what is termed inactivation, the decrease of current flow through sodium channels at maintained depolarization. Even at the normal resting potential of, say, -70 mV for a frog node of Ranvier, ca. 20% of the channels are closed and inactivated, i.e., incapable of passing current on a sudden depolarization, in contrast to the remaining 80% of closed but resting channels. The term inactivation has thus evolved from bulk current ("macroscopic") phenomena and is applied to channels although its single-channel ("microscopic") basi

Brain Oxygen Extraction Is Differentially Altered by Alzheimer's and Vascular Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease and vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), as well as their concurrence, represent the most common types of cognitive dysfunction. Treatment strategies for these two conditions are quite different; however, there exists a considerable overlap in their clinical manifestations, and most biomarkers reveal similar abnormalities between these two conditions. PURPOSE: To evaluate the potential of cerebral oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) as a biomarker for differential diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and VCI. We hypothesized that in Alzheimer's disease OEF will be red

Herkinorin Promotes μ-Opioid Receptor Internalization and Protects iPSC-Derived Neurons from Hypoxic/Ischemic Injury.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic/ischemic brain injury remains a major clinical challenge, yet the cellular mechanisms linking oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R) to opioid receptor regulation in human neurons are still not fully understood. The trafficking of μ-opioid receptors (MOR) and κ-opioid receptors (KOR) is a key regulator of neuronal survival under stress. Most studies to date in this field have employed rodent models. However, given the molecular and physiological differences between rodents and humans, this study employed human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neurons to

Free-Breathing Low-Field MRI of the Lungs Detects Functional Alterations Associated With Persistent Symptoms After COVID-19 Infection.

OBJECTIVES: With the COVID-19 pandemic, repetitive lung examinations have become necessary to follow-up symptoms and associated alterations. Low-field MRI, benefiting from reduced susceptibility effects, is a promising alternative for lung imaging to limit radiations absorbed by patients during CT examinations, which also have limited capability to assess functional alterations. The aim of this investigative study was to explore the functional abnormalities that free-breathing 0.55 T MRI in combination with the phase-resolved functional lung (PREFUL) analysis could identify in patients with pe
