BACKGROUND: The Global Polio Eradication Initiative introduced novel oral polio vaccine Type 2 (nOPV2) to address circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus Type 2 (cVDPV2). Although nOPV2 is a more genetically stable vaccine, it may not have the immediate trust of communities and health workers due to its novelty, potential side effects, and introduction under an Emergency Use Listing (EUL). We explored how nOPV2 introduction might be perceived by stakeholders and identified communications barriers related to nOPV2 hesitancy.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing war have had devastating effects on health programs. This observational study assessed uptake and persistent use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) during wartime. The study included newly-initiating daily PrEP users from 94 clinics who enrolled on PrEP from October 2022 through September 2023. PrEP persistence was defined as returning for a PrEP refill no later than 7 days after the expected refill date. We used Kaplan-Meier curves and sex-stratified Cox regression to explore PrEP discontinuation by sex, key population group, age group, and war

OBJECTIVES: to measure the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on minor psychological disorders among Mobile Emergency Care Service workers.
METHODS: this was a retrospective and prospective cohort study conducted in a southern Brazilian capital. Fifty-two workers (88.2% sample size) were monitored before the pandemic and two years later, using the Self-Reporting Questionnaire. Relative risk was estimated using the generalized estimating equations model and multiple analysis of variance for repeated measures, considering p<0.05.
RESULTS: disorders increased from 32.7% (n=17) to 40.4% (n=21) afte

BACKGROUND: The objective of the prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (pMTCT) cascade analysis tool is to provide frontline health managers at the facility level with the means to rapidly, independently and quantitatively track patient flows through the pMTCT cascade, and readily identify priority areas for clinic-level improvement interventions. Over a period of six months, five experienced maternal-child health managers and researchers iteratively adapted and tested this systems analysis tool for pMTCT services. They prioritized components of the pMTCT cascade for inclusion, disseminat

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic caused lasting disruption to healthcare systems and the mental health of frontline workers. Though the acute crisis has passed, many healthcare workers (HCWs) continue to experience long-term psychological effects, including anxiety, grief, and burnout. This mixed-methods study investigates the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of physicians in a low-resource country. Methods: Drawing on data from the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) or otolaryngology department at a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan, the study employed an explanatory

For the last 8 months, COronaVIrus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been hovering over the planet as a pandemic, and there is no sign of this virus going away anytime soon. In the meantime, life must go on, businesses must remain open, manufacturing must flow smoothly to fulfill consumers' daily demands, and education cannot be halted. Simultaneously, the frontline workers like doctors, nurses, support staff, and other essential workers are working tirelessly in their respective fields in the absence of a widely available effective vaccine. The question is: What should every citizen who needs to ve

Healthcare workers experienced psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in the form of intrusive thoughts and heightened death anxiety. Vaccination is expected not only reduce infection risk but also reduce psychological burden. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship among COVID-19 obsessions, emotional exhaustion, and death anxiety and examined whether vaccine acceptance moderates these association among medical staff. Cross-sectional designs were adopted in this study, and data was collected from 200 members of the medical staff (doctors, nurses

Serological databases represent an important source of information to perceive COVID-19 impact on health professionals involved in combating the disease. This paper describes SerumCovid, a COVID-19 serological database focused on the diagnosis of health professionals, providing a preliminary analysis to contribute to the understanding of the antibody response to the SARS-CoV-2. The study population comprises 321 samples from 236 healthcare and frontline workers fighting COVID-19 in Vitória de Santo Antão, Brazil. Samples were collected from at least six days of symptoms to more than 100 days.

The prevalence and contributing factors of mental health issues among health workers in Vietnam during the early 2022 Omicron wave remain underexplored. This study investigated the prevalence and factors associated with anxiety and stress among health workers in a Vietnamese hospital during this period. A cross-sectional study, conducted from February 28 to April 14, 2022, at Hanoi Medical University Hospital, assessed anxiety and stress among 754 frontline health workers using the DASS-21 questionnaire via a Google survey. Logistic regression models were used to identify factors linked to anx

The first defense line of the battle, healthcare workers (HCWs), faces a significant challenge in managing the current COVID-19 pandemic. An online electronic survey was sent to HCWs via email and social media networks. Socio-demographic data and work environment-related variables were assessed. Consequences of burnout (BO) were reported, e.g., elicited medical errors. Maslach burnout inventory was used to diagnose BO. Two hundred and eighty-four participants were included with a mean age of 39.83 ± 7.34 years, 70.8% worked in the COVID-19 frontline, 91.9% were followed daily updates about COV

This study examines the perceptions and experiences of health workers and caregivers regarding the delivery of long-acting antiretroviral therapy (LA-ART) in Uganda, especially for preventing vertical transmission of HIV. Using a qualitative implementation research design informed by the Health Belief Model, the researchers conducted 17 key informant interviews with clinicians, nurses, peer mothers, social workers, department heads, and lead researchers across six study centers between May 2022 and September 2023. The interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim into English language and

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has necessitated many healthcare workers operating on the frontlines. Another segment of the population whose mental well-being is being tested are the 'other essential workers' (e.g. supermarket workers). The current study aimed to compare the mental health of healthcare versus other essential workers in the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak. The COVID-19 and you: mentaL heaLth in AusTralia now survEy (COLLATE) project is a nationwide online mental health survey launched on 1 April 2020, aimed at identifying key mental health concerns. During the COVID-19 pandemic, prolonged usage of personal protective equipment (PPE) and frequent handwashing has exacerbated or caused skin diseases, particularly amongst frontline workers. Skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, and hand eczema, affect patients’ quality of life and their ability to work. These conditions can be managed by frequent moisturization and washing with gentle cleansers. In this review, we discuss the properties of effective moisturizers and cleansers for patients with skin diseases related to enhanced infection control procedures.

Late clinical referrals in low-resource setting paediatrics lead to high childhood mortality and cause disabilities. This issue becomes even worse in settings where the public health system is overloaded owing to the lack of staff and proper resources. Where an inability to deliver timely healthcare results, the frustration of parents often leads to aggression towards healthcare professionals working on the frontlines. This report analyses the connection between late presentations, systemic issues with resources and insecurity of healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: In times of crisis the need to make sense of the situation becomes particularly evident. The perspective of sensemaking captures how individuals seek to clarify and understand what is going on when they encounter ambiguous, unexpected or confusing events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Sensemaking may occur at different but mutually interrelated organisational, interpersonal and individual levels. During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers (HCWs) faced multifaceted challenges related to their work. This study aimed to explore how HCWs managed their daily work during the early
