Baseline Mapping of Schistosomiasis and Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis in the Northern and Eastern Health Regions of Gabon, Central Africa: Recommendations for Preventive Chemotherapy.

In order to follow the Preventive Chemotherapy (PC) for the transmission control as recommended by WHO, Gabon initiated in 2014 the mapping of Schistosomiasis and Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis (STH). Here, we report the results of the Northern and Eastern health regions, representing a third of the land area and 12% of its total population. All nine departments of the two regions were surveyed and from each, five schools were examined with 50 schoolchildren per school. The parasitological examinations were realized using the filtration method for urine and the Kato-Katz technique for stool sa

Urogenital schistosomiasis during pregnancy is associated with low birth weight delivery: analysis of a prospective cohort of pregnant women and their offspring in Gabon.

An estimated 40 million women of childbearing age suffer from schistosomiasis. Animal models indicate a deleterious effect of maternal schistosomiasis on pregnancy outcomes. To date there is a lack of epidemiological evidence evaluating schistosomiasis-related morbidity in pregnancy. This study was designed to describe the impact of urogenital schistosomiasis on pregnancy outcomes in a highly endemic region of central Africa. Pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in Fougamou and Lambaréné, Gabon, were consecutively screened for the presence of Schistosoma haematobium eggs in diurnal urine

Effect of Antihelminthic Treatment on Vaccine Immunogenicity to a Seasonal Influenza Vaccine in Primary School Children in Gabon: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Helminth infections are a major public health problem, especially in the tropics. Infected individuals have an altered immune response with evidence that antibody response to vaccination is impaired. Hence, treatment of helminth infections before vaccination may be a simple intervention to improve vaccine immunogenicity. In the present study we investigated whether a single-dose antihelminthic treatment influences antibody responses to a seasonal influenza vaccine in primary school children living in Gabon, Central Africa. METHODS: In this placebo-controlled double-blind trial con

The relationship between microfilaraemic and amicrofilaraemic loiasis involving co-infection with Mansonella perstans and clinical symptoms in an exposed population from Gabon.

The relationship between the frequency of loiasis objective symptoms and microfilaraemic or amicrofilaraemic infection was assessed in 1148 exposed patients also infected, or not, with Mansonella perstans. Filarial infections were detected by direct microscopy, leucoconcentration and serology, with prevalence values of 39.5% Loa loa, 5.6% M. perstans and 3.4% co-infection with both filarial species. Amicrofilaraemic or occult loiasis (OL) predominated among L. loa-infected individuals, with a prevalence of 58.2%. Hypermicrofilaraemia (>8000 microfilariae (mf)/ml) was found in 18.4% of L. loa m

Simian foamy virus in non-human primates and cross-species transmission to humans in Gabon: an emerging zoonotic disease in central Africa?

It is now known that all human retroviruses have a non-human primate counterpart. It has been reported that the presence of these retroviruses in humans is the result of interspecies transmission. Several authors have described the passage of a simian retrovirus, simian foamy virus (SFV), from primates to humans. To better understand this retroviral "zoonosis" in natural settings, we evaluated the presence of SFV in both captive and wild non-human primates and in humans at high risk, such as hunters and people bitten by a non-human primate, in Gabon, central Africa. A high prevalence of SFV wa

Gut resilience and clinical homeostasis following administration of neomycin and albendazole in soil-transmitted helminth-infected adults living in Lambaréné, Gabon.

PURPOSE: Gut resilience and systemic homeostasis are interrelated dynamic functions. A gut that fails to regulate intestinal barrier integrity, metabolite production, and immune regulation will lead to systemic pathogenic invasion and susceptibility to infections. Gut resilience withstands stressors that can induce gut failure, and even when disturbances occur, it quickly restores its composition and functions. There is a paucity of data on the microbiome of people living in low- and middle-income settings. We therefore assessed the local and systemic conditions of gut resilience following neo

Molecular evidence of co-circulation of different dengue virus serotypes associated with malaria co-infection among febrile children in Libreville, Gabon.

OBJECTIVE: Acute febrile illnesses are frequently attributed to malaria in endemic countries, despite the circulation of arboviruses whose vectors share the same breeding environments. This study assessed the molecular prevalence of arboviral and arboviral-malaria co-infections and associated epidemiological and hematological characteristics among febrile children in Libreville, Gabon. METHODS: Plasma samples from 151 febrile children attending a malaria sentinel surveillance site between September and October 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Samples were screened by pan-DENV, CHIKV and ZI

Species identification and drug susceptibility testing of non-tuberculous mycobacteria by Line Probe Assay in Lambaréné, Gabon-a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are a group of bacteria that cause rare lung infections and are increasingly recognized as causative agents of opportunistic and device-associated infections in humans. In Gabon, there is a lack of data on NTM species identification and drug susceptibility. The aim of this study was to identify the frequency of NTM species and their genotypic susceptibility pattern to commonly used antibiotics for NTM infections in Gabon. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the CERMEL TB laboratory from January 2020 to December 2022, NTM subspecies

Inflammatory cytokine responses in children with asymptomatic malaria infection living in rural, semi-urban and urban areas in south-eastern Gabon.

Cytokines are soluble mediators of the immune response, and their evolution influences the disease outcome. Gaining knowledge on cytokines has become important, as they can constitute biomarkers allowing the diagnosis of malaria and preventing severe forms of the disease. Here, we investigated 10 cytokines and their circulating levels in asymptomatic Gabonese children with Plasmodium falciparum infection living in urban, semi-urban and rural areas. Blood samples were collected from 273 schoolchildren (153 uninfected and 120 infected) aged 6 to 192 months. Hematological parameters were determin

Impact of Sickle Cell Trait and Naturally Acquired Immunity on Uncomplicated Malaria after Controlled Human Malaria Infection in Adults in Gabon.

Controlled human malaria infection (CHMI) by direct venous inoculation (DVI) with 3,200 cryopreserved Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites (PfSPZ) consistently leads to parasitemia and malaria symptoms in malaria-naive adults. We used CHMI by DVI to investigate infection rates, parasite kinetics, and malaria symptoms in lifelong malaria-exposed (semi-immune) Gabonese adults with and without sickle cell trait. Eleven semi-immune Gabonese with normal hemoglobin (IA), nine with sickle cell trait (IS), and five nonimmune European controls with normal hemoglobin (NI) received 3,200 PfSPZ by DVI and we

Low incidence of the immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome among HIV-infected patients starting antiretroviral therapy in Gabon: a prospective cohort study.

There is a paucity of data on the immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) in the Central African region. We followed ART-naive HIV-infected patients initiating antiretroviral therapy in an HIV clinic in Gabon, for 6 months. Among 101 patients, IRIS was diagnosed in five. All IRIS cases were mucocutaneous manifestations. There were no cases of tuberculosis (TB) IRIS, but active TB (n = 20) was associated with developing other forms of IRIS (p = 0.02). Six patients died. The incidence of IRIS is low in Gabon, with mild, mucocutaneous manifestations.

Modification of the chemical composition and the natural durability of Avicennia germinans mangrove tree of the estuary region of Gabon exposed to marine hydrocarbons pollution.

Mangroves is an ecosystem which plays an economical role in Gabon for its watercourses where are used for fishing and marine traffic or as little bin for garbage and waste water disposal. These bad practices destroy that fragile ecosystem, perturbing like this carbon sequestration and biodiversity protection. Hence, the impact of the anthropogenic pollution stress of fishing engine oils so called hydrocarbons pollution on the chemical, microstructure and natural durability of Avicennia. germinans (L.)L. from Ambowé mangrove of the Estuary region of Gabon was studied. The results were compared

High Diversity of emm Types and Marked Tetracycline Resistance of Group A Streptococci and Other ß-Hemolytic Streptococci in Gabon, Central Africa.

BACKGROUND: Group A ß-hemolytic streptococcus (GABHS) is a leading pathogen worldwide and post-streptococcal sequelae is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in resource-limited countries. The M protein (coded by the emm gene) is a key virulence factor and a component of GABHS vaccine candidates. As data on BHS in Central Africa are scarce, antibiotic resistance, emm diversity and potential vaccine coverage were investigated. METHODS: In a prospective cross-sectional study, 1014 Gabonese were screened for streptococcal throat carriage, tonsillopharyngitis and pyoderma by throat and skin s

Malaria in urban, semi-urban and rural areas of southern of Gabon: comparison of the Pfmdr 1 and Pfcrt genotypes from symptomatic children.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Artesunate-amodiaquine (AS-AQ) and artemether-lumefantrine (AL) are first- and second-line treatments for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Gabon. AL remains highly efficacious, but its widespread use has led to molecular selection of the NFD haplotype on Pfmdr1 and K76 in Pfcrt. In this study, plasmodial infection characteristics and the distribution of the Pfmdr1 and Pfcrt genotypes involved in reduced efficacy of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) were investigated in four Gabonese localities. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the paediatri

[Bacterial meningitis in the adult. Study of 85 cases observed in the infectious disease unit of the Fondation Jeanne Ebori (F.J.E.), Libreville, Gabon].

We conducted a retrospective review to specify the frequency, identify the aetiological factors of bacterial meningitis in adults (BMA) and to evaluate the therapeutic protocol used. This study was conducted on 85 (BMA) cases of hospitalised patients between January 1991 and December 1995 (5 years) on our service. The BMA represented 3% of all admissions for infectious diseases at the Foundation Jeanne Ebori in Libreville. It occurred in an endemosporadic fashion. All patients were Black Africans with an average age of 33 years (range: 16-60 years). Males predominated by a ratio of 2.4. Tha pa

Detection of DNA of filariae closely related to Mansonella perstans in faecal samples from wild non-human primates from Cameroon and Gabon.

BACKGROUND: The Onchocercidae is a family of filarial nematodes with several species of medical or veterinary importance. Microfilariae are found in the blood and/or the dermis and are usually diagnosed in humans by microscopy examination of a blood sample or skin biopsy. The main objectives of this study were to evaluate whether filariae DNA can be detected in faecal samples of wild non-human primates (NHPs), whether the detected parasites were closely related to those infecting humans and whether filarial DNA detection in faeces is associated with co-infections with nematodes (Oesophagostumu

Schistosoma haematobium effects on Plasmodium falciparum infection modified by soil-transmitted helminths in school-age children living in rural areas of Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Malaria burden remains high in the sub-Saharan region where helminths are prevalent and where children are often infected with both types of parasites. Although the effect of helminths on malaria infection is evident, the impact of these co-infections is not clearly elucidated yet and the scarce findings are conflicting. In this study, we investigated the effect of schistosomiasis, considering soil-transmitted helminths (STH), on prevalence and incidence of Plasmodium falciparum infection. METHODOLOGY: This longitudinal survey was conducted in school-age children living in two rur
