The effect of guar gum on the distribution of a radiolabelled meal in the gastrointestinal tract of the rat.

1. The effect of addition of guar gum (5 and 10 g/l) to a radiolabelled, homogenized, baked-bean test meal on the distribution of that meal in the gastrointestinal tract was investigated in groups of male rats killed at 25, 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 min after gavage. 2. Addition of 5 and 10 g guar gum/l significantly increased the proportion of the meal remaining in the stomach at 25 and 50 min after gavage (P less than 0.01). 3. The heads of the control meal and meals containing guar gum reached the distal intestine within 25 min after gavage but radioactivity was not observed in the caecum u

Further validation of the plasma isotope ratio method for measurement of cholesterol absorption in man.

Recently we evaluated an isotope ratio method (IRM) for measurement of cholesterol absorption in 14 patients (15 experiments) hospitalized in the metabolic ward by comparing it to simultaneous measurements with a fecal radioactivity method (FRM) and found good to excellent agreement between two procedures (Samuel, P., J. R. Crouse, and E. H. Ahrens, Jr. 1978 J. Lipid Res. 19: 82-93). This comparison has now been extended to additional studies carried out in eight hospitalized patients (19 experiments). Of the 34 comparisons between the IRM and the FRM in our hands, 29 were technically acceptab

Cascade ROS-modulating Au/Cu nanozyme hydrogel with nitric oxide release ability for accelerated diabetic foot ulcer healing.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) persist due to excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), infection, and poor angiogenesis. We engineered an injectable guar gum hydrogel (AuCu-Arg/Gel) embedding gold/copper nanozymes (Au@Cu₂(OH)₃Cl-L-Arg) to address these barriers synergistically. The nanozymes display cascade-mimicking peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities to rebalance ROS. In the acidic, bacteria-laden niche, peroxidase-like activity is switched on, generating hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and driving bacterial viability to < 1 %. Concurrently, the ROS-rich milieu triggers nitric oxi

Partially hydrolyzed guar gum suppresses binge alcohol-induced liver fat accumulation via gut environment modulation in mice.

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), including alcoholic fatty liver, is a serious problem in many countries, and its economic costs to society are enormous. There is evidence indicating the relations between gut environments and liver disease, and thus, improvement of gut environment is expected to be an effective approach for ALD prevention. In this study, we explored the preventive effect of partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) on ALD focusing on the gut-liver axis. Two weeks of PHGG pre-feeding suppressed the liver fat accumulation in the experimental binge alcohol model mouse. In cecal

Galactooligosaccharide supplementation provides protection against Citrobacter rodentium-induced colitis without limiting pathogen burden.

Many enteric pathogens, including Salmonella and enteropathogenic and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, express adhesins that recognize and bind to carbohydrate moieties expressed on epithelial cells. An attractive strategy for inhibiting bacterial adherence employs molecules that mimic these epithelial binding sites. Prebiotic oligosaccharides are non-digestible, fermentable fibres capable of modulating the gut microbiota. Moreover, they may act as molecular decoys that competitively inhibit adherence of pathogens to host cells. In particular, galactooligosaccharides (GOS) and other prebiot

Propionic and butyric acids, formed in the caecum of rats fed highly fermentable dietary fibre, are reflected in portal and aortic serum.

SCFA are important end products formed during colonic fermentation of dietary fibre (DF). It has been suggested that propionic and butyric acids affect metabolic parameters, low-grade systemic inflammation, insulin resistance and obesity. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the various SCFA profiles observed after fermentation in the caecum of rats fed pectin, guar gum and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) were also represented in hepatic portal and aortic serum. The SCFA in serum were extracted using hollow fibre-supported liquid membrane extraction before GLC analysis. The co

Interventions for treating cholestasis in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric cholestasis has been linked to adverse maternal and fetal/neonatal outcomes. As the pathophysiology is poorly understood, therapies have been empiric. The first version of this review, published in 2001, and including nine randomised controlled trials involving 227 women, concluded that there was insufficient evidence to recommend any of the interventions alone or in combination. This is the first update. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of therapeutic and delivery interventions in women with cholestasis of pregnancy. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the

Multifunctional self-healing and pH-responsive hydrogel dressing based on cationic guar gum and hyaluronic acid for on-demand drug release.

Pathogen invasion and persistent inflammatory storms caused by bacterial infections are the main challenges to the healing of infected wounds. Herein, this study proposed a pH-responsive polysaccharide hydrogel dressing (CG-HA) composed of cationic guar gum (CG) and hyaluronic acid (HA). Additionally, Zn2+ and ferulic acid (FA)/β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion complexes (FA/β-CD) were co-introduced into the CG-HA hydrogel to form the desired FA/β-CD@CG-HA-Zn hydrogel. The FA/β-CD@CG-HA-Zn hydrogel was constructed based on multiple non-covalent interactions, including electrostatic interactions,

Polysaccharide-fecal microbiota-based colon-targeted self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system of curcumin for treating polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The gut microbiome is involved in the pathogenesis of many diseases including polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Modulating the gut microbiome can lead to eubiosis and treatment of various metabolic conditions. However, there is no proper study assessing the delivery of microbial technology for the treatment of such conditions. The present study involves the development of guar gum-pectin-based solid self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (S-SNEDDS) containing curcumin (CCM) and fecal microbiota extract (FME) for the treatment of PCOS. The optimized S-SNEDDS containing FME and CCM was prep

A new guar gum-based adsorbent for the removal of Hg(II) from its aqueous solutions.

Modification of biopolymers by oxidation is an easy process to develop effective adsorbents for the removal of toxic metal ions from their aqueous solutions. In the present study, guar gum (GG) was crosslinked with epichlorohydrin and then oxidized to the polydialdehyde form (GG-clPDA). The latter was converted to a Schiff-base, GG-clCHN(CH2)6NCHGG, by reaction with hexamethylenediamine. Different forms of the modified GG were characterized by SEM, FTIR and XRD and investigated as adsorbents for the removal of Hg(II) ions from their aqueous solutions. The adsorption process was carried out thr

Gastrointestinal effects of low-digestible carbohydrates.

Low-digestible carbohydrates (LDCs) are carbohydrates that are incompletely or not absorbed in the small intestine but are at least partly fermented by bacteria in the large intestine. Fiber, resistant starch, and sugar alcohols are types of LDCs. Given potential health benefits (including a reduced caloric content, reduced or no effect on blood glucose levels, non-cariogenic effect) the prevalence of LDCs in processed foods is increasing. Many of the benefits of LDCs are related to the inability of human digestive enzymes to break down completely the carbohydrates into absorbable saccharides

5-Fluorouracil-loaded green chitosan nanoparticles/ guar gum nanocomposite hydrogel in controlled drug delivery.

In recent years nanotechnologies have been applied to human health with promising results, especially in the field of drug delivery. Polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) have garnered much importance in controlled drug delivery owing to their size. Chitosan (Cs) is a well-recognized biopolymer and Cs NPs have been widely explored in drug delivery. Nonetheless, reports pertaining to green synthesis of Cs NPs are scarce. Thus, in this study, green synthesis of Cs NPs was accomplished from raw mango peel extract. Spherical Cs NPs with positively charged surface of 33.4 mV was accomplished by this proces

New resource food-arabinogalactan improves DSS-induced acute colitis through intestinal flora and NLRP3 signaling pathway.

Colitis can significantly impact daily life. This study utilized DSS to induce acute colitis in mice and examined the regulatory effect of arabinogalactan (AG). The findings demonstrated that AG intake effectively alleviated the phenotype of DSS-induced colitis in mice and protected against small intestine damage. Furthermore, AG suppressed the secretion of pro-inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL-1β, while promoting the secretion of anti-inflammatory factor IL-10. It also inhibited the secretion of LPS in serum and MPO in colon tissue. Additionally, AG regulated the NF-κB/MAPK/PPARγ signaling pa
