For ectothermal animals, such as the teleost Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), temperature is a key environmental factor that influences metabolism, energy allocation and growth. However, the complex interactions among feed intake, appetite-regulating signalling pathways, gastrointestinal transit rates, and energy partitioning toward metabolism and growth across varying water temperatures remain poorly understood. In this study, feed intake, feed efficiency, somatic indices and growth were examined in Atlantic salmon post-smolts (ca. 200 g) acclimated to either 8°C, 12°C or 15°C for 8 weeks. Foll

AIM: To compare the effects of regular vs low-FODMAP rye bread on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms and to study gastrointestinal conditions with SmartPill®.
METHODS: Our aim was to evaluate if rye bread low in FODMAPs would cause reduced hydrogen excretion, lower intraluminal pressure, higher colonic pH, different transit times, and fewer IBS symptoms than regular rye bread. The study was a randomized, double-blind, controlled cross-over meal study. Female IBS patients (n = 7) ate study breads at three consecutive meals during one day. The diet was similar for both study periods except

Peptic ulcer is a recurrent chronic illness and has become almost a hallmark of the so-called civilized life. In folk medicine, the Celastrus paniculatus plant has been used for the prevention and treatment of various diseases and gastrointestinal disturbances, including dyspepsia and stomach ulcers. The aim of this study is to evaluate the gastroprotective and antiulcer effects of Celastrus paniculatus seed oil (CPO) against several gastric ulcer models in rats. The gastroprotective and antiulcer effects of CPO were evaluated using pylorus-ligated ulcer ethanol- and indomethacin-induced ulcer

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Autoimmune gastrointestinal dysmotility is a limited autoimmune dysautonomia occurring idiopathically or in the context of an anatomically remote neoplasm, previously documented or unsuspected. Here we report 24 Mayo Clinic patients in whom the profile of serum autoantibodies aided this diagnosis.
METHODS: All patients were ascertained serologically in the course of service evaluation for autoantibodies consistent with neurologic autoimmunity. Review of their histories, motility studies, and laboratory findings revealed that all had presented with subacute gastrointestinal

A case of congenital short gut is reported in a 4-month-old boy presenting with failure to thrive. Upper gastrointestinal examination (UGI) with small bowel follow-through (SBFT) demonstrated dilation of the duodenum and jejunum, with rapid transit to rectum. On barium enema (BE), rapid transit of barium was noted to the dilated proximal small bowel seen on UGI/SBFT. Neither study delineated the ileocecal region, and the overall length of bowel appeared short. The diagnosis of congenital short gut was confirmed at surgery. Congenital short-gut syndrome is a rare entity. The diagnosis can be su

INTRODUCTION: Bariatric surgical interventions such as laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), One-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB) and Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB) have proven to be effective in long-term management of obesity. These procedures result in changes in anatomy and in motor and secretory function of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
AREAS COVERED: This review covers the changes in gastrointestinal motility and their consequences observed after the various types of bariatric surgery. A systematic literature search on motility disor

Gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction is the most common non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). Symptoms of GI dysmotility include early satiety and nausea from delayed gastric emptying, bloating from poor small bowel coordination, and constipation and defecatory dysfunction from impaired colonic transit. Understanding the pathophysiology and treatment of these symptoms in PD patients has been hampered by the lack of investigation into GI symptoms and pathology in PD animal models. We report that the prototypical parkinsonian neurotoxin, MPTP (1-methyl 4-phenyl 1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine),

Phosphate intoxication, manifested by hypocalcemic tetany and acute renal failure, may complicate bowel-cleansing preparations which contain phosphate. These preparations are commonly used to prepare patients for various gastrointestinal procedures. Often, patients who receive these regimens are at increased risk of phosphate intoxication from diseases which slow gastrointestinal transit or decrease renal excretion (renal insufficiency). We present a patient who developed oliguric acute renal failure from severe phosphate intoxication associated with a phosphate-containing bowel-cleansing regi

Chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction is a clinical syndrome whose pathophysiology, objective diagnosis, and treatment are poorly understood. We investigated 8 patients with this syndrome in whom intestinal dysmotility was established manometrically by two or more of the following criteria: abnormal configuration or propagation of interdigestive motor complexes, sustained incoordinate pressure activity, non-propagated bursts of phasic pressure activity, and failure of a solid-liquid meal to induce a fed pattern. To establish the functional impairment and region of the gut primarily affected by

Most clinicians will agree that chronic constipation is characterized by abnormal bowel movement consistency and/or frequency plus or minus evacuation symptoms, but patient perception of constipation varies widely and includes symptoms that may or may not meet official defining criteria. Although intermittent constipation is extremely common, only a small minority of patients seek care for their symptoms. Among these patients, dissatisfaction with the currently available laxative options is not uncommon, and many patients will require specialized care for severe or refractory symptoms-especial

Neuropeptide S (NPS) is a recently identified bioactive peptide that activates an orphan G-protein coupled receptor, called the NPS receptor (NPSR). In rats, NPS and NPSR constitute a novel neuropeptide system expressed both in the central nervous system and in peripheral tissues, controlling visceromotor, neuroendocrine, nociceptive and behavioural responses. To improve the knowledge of the role of the NPS-NPSR system in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, we investigated: 1- the supraspinal effect of NPS on motor functions of the upper (gastric emptying and gastrointestinal transit) and lower (

BACKGROUND: To study the performance and efficacy of small bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) in a large cohort of patients with surgically altered gastrointestinal anatomy (SAGA).
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all SBCE studies between January 2000 and August 2025. Patients with SAGA (prior gastrectomy, gastric bypass, small bowel resections, esophagectomy, or Whipple procedures) were matched 1:2 to patients with native gastrointestinal (GI) anatomy. Primary outcome was SBCE completion rate. Secondary outcomes included diagnostic yield, capsule retention, and GI transit times.
RESULTS: A

OBJECTIVE: To develop a simple radiological technique for measuring normal oesophageal transit time.
DESIGN: 72 patients with no oesophageal or gastrointestinal complaints underwent manometry and radiological oesophageal transit time (ROTT). ROTT was perfomed using 2 ml of fluid barium on a digital X-ray machine. Digital image acquisition started with the beginning of swallowing using 1 frame/s for 15 s. These images were printed on a single film. The effect of ageing on ROTT was also assessed.
RESULTS: ROTT had a mean value of 10.08 s. ROTT was divided into three segments: proximal-to-left-

Disorders of autonomic regulation are common in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Patients most frequently complain of dysphagia and therapy resistant constipation, as far as the gastrointestinal tract is concerned. These symptoms have to be attributed to a neuronal degeneration. In a pilot study we therefore investigated the effect of stimulation of the myenteric plexus by cisapride. 11 women and 13 men were examined, the average age was 67.3 years, the Webster rating 17 points. In 2 out of 24 patients, colonic transit was prolonged up to the limit, both with and without therapy. The ot

Increasing consumption of refined sugar has been implicated in many gastrointestinal disorders on epidemiological grounds. Nine volunteers agreed to participate in a study comparing the effects of a diet containing 165 g refined sugar/day with a diet of only 60 g/day on gut transit, bile acid metabolism, and fermentative activity of the intestinal flora. The wet and dry weight, pH, and water content of the stools were similar on the two diets. On the high sugar diet mouth-to-anus transit time was significantly prolonged, despite a shortened mouth-to-caecum transit time. The faecal concentratio

The effect of xylitol and glucose on the rate of gastric emptying and intestinal transit and on motilin, gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP), and insulin release were studied in human volunteers. A single oral dose of 200 mL water containing 30 g glucose or 30 g xylitol, mixed with a 99mtechnetium-tin (99mTc-Sn) colloid, was used. Similar dosing without the label was used in motilin, GIP, and insulin studies. Xylitol decreased the rate of gastric emptying but concomitantly accelerated intestinal transit compared with glucose. The half-times for gastric emptying were 77.5 +/- 4.6 and 39.8 +/-
