Despite global efforts, gender-based violence (GBV) remains a problem that affects millions of people, particularly women. The prevalence of GBV in Nigeria has not improved over time; women who experienced physical violence since age 15 increased from 28% in 2008 to 31% in 2018. Intimate partner violence (IPV) constitutes a large proportion of the GBV in Nigeria. Although perceptions of IPV have been studied, differentials in perceptions among the different generations of Nigerians are unknown. People's perceptions of IPV are influenced by societal shifts and other factors that differ among pe

INTRODUCTION: There is a limited literature base regarding the intersection of drug and alcohol treatment, violence, and trauma. While research substantiates that exposure to violence and trauma impacts the propensity to misuse substances, the conceptualization in clinical trials and practice has largely been narrow and gendered, referring only to intimate partner or domestic violence. Our systematic mapping review explored a more inclusive and expansive review of survivors of and perpetrators of violence and trauma (e.g., intimate partner violence, sexual assault, stalking, child abuse, polit

UNLABELLED: Chemsex is the use of methamphetamine or other substances to enhance sexual experiences, and is most often associated with sexual minority men. Within the chemsex literature, questions of sexual violence emerge due, in part, to ambiguity about what constitutes consent within sexualized environments with co-occurring substance use. To understand the context in which sexual violence occurs, data from an online survey of sexual and gender minority Texans were analyzed using bivariate and logistic regression (N = 1273), and qualitative interviews with substance-using sexual minority me

AIMS: This study examines whether the relational proximity to the victim or perpetrator of witnessed community violence is associated with youth symptoms.
METHODS: Data come from the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect, a national high-risk sample. The sample included 12-year-old youth (N = 720) who had witnessed violence in their lifetimes. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions tested whether relationship proximity differentiated youth functioning (social competency, withdrawal, anxiety/depression, delinquency, and aggression), and whether gender moderated these effects.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In comparison with men, women who use drugs (WWUD) have considerably more frequent and intense experiences with interpersonal violence, sexual abuse and trauma. The aim of this study was to identify issues related to gender-based vulnerability in a group of WWUD attended in a harm reduction facility in Madrid, Spain.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted during a screening of blood borne infections. We included WWUD (smoked or injected heroin/cocaine) who were actively screened for HIV, HBV and HCV in a harm reduction setting in Madrid (Spain) from J

INTRODUCTION: While much of the literature on homelessness is centred on the experience of men, women make up over one-quarter of Canada's homeless population. Research has shown that women experiencing homelessness are often hidden (i.e. provisionally housed) and have different pathways into homelessness and different needs as compared to men. The objective of this research is to identify evidence-based interventions and best practices to better support women experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review with a gender and equity analysis. This involved searc

Sexism is a type of structural discrimination that can manifest as the subjugation of woman in familial and social roles. Gender-based violence often occurs in societies where patriarchal norms exist. Violence against women and girls (VAWG) includes physical, sexual and psychological/emotional abuse directed towards females. Emotional violence against women and girls is usually underestimated, if not overlooked. Patriarchal upbringing can predominantly result in the emotional abuse of female children. This narrative review will discuss the impact emotional abuse in women and girls mediated by

The Psychosocial and Economic Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic in Mathare slums were adverse which necessitated mitigation strategies to be employed to cushion the most vulnerable and help them cope with the new 'state of affairs'. The pandemic was characterized by a surge in the respiratory infections, unemployment, households going hungry, gender-based violence in families, child abuse cases and increased rates of teenage pregnancy. Retrospective case study design was employed; secondary data from hospital departments were extracted for analysis from March 2020 to December 2021. Interventions in

In this 10-year longitudinal study 150 mother-daughter pairs were recruited to participate in a study examining gender-based abuse across three generations. Forms of gender-based abuse included: child sexual abuse, witnessing intimate partner violence against their mothers, and intimate partner violence or dating violence in adolescence or adulthood. Daughters were interviewed when they were on average 9, 14, and 16 years old. Regression analyses revealed that if the grandmother (G1) was abused by her husband, her daughter (G2) was more likely to be sexually molested in childhood and was also

Recent media and academic reports project rising levels of girls' violence and a narrowing gender gap. In response, the authors investigate 21st century trends in girls' violence as reported across multiple official and unofficial longitudinal sources: Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) arrest and juvenile court referral statistics; National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) victimization data; and three sources of self-reported violent offending-Monitoring the Future, Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, and National Survey on Drug Use and Health. OBJECTIVE: Although recent research has found similar rates of violence by female and male patients who have serious mental disorders, it is less clear whether violence by female patients is as likely to result in injury as violence by male patients. This study examined the relationship between violent patients' gender and injury to staff members on an inpatient unit.
METHODS: All injuries to staff caused by violent behavior by patients on a locked university-based short-term inpatient unit were identified in a search of institutional records from October 1988 to June 1999. We reviewed the me

BACKGROUND: People with HIV (PWH) are disproportionately affected by violence. The majority of violence research has focused on intimate partner violence, childhood abuse, gender-based violence, and sexual violence more generally. Less research has examined community violence among PWH. In this analysis, we test the association between hate crime experience and mental and HIV outcomes in a sample of adults with HIV, majority of whom are Black/African American, living in Atlanta, Georgia.
SETTING: PWH were recruited from HIV service settings (N = 285) to participate in a cross-sectional study.

Violence against women and girls is an important global health concern. Numerous health organizations highlight engaging men and boys in preventing violence against women as a potentially impactful public health prevention strategy. Adapted from an international setting for use in the US, "Manhood 2.0" is a "gender transformative" program that involves challenging harmful gender and sexuality norms that foster violence against women while promoting bystander intervention (i.e., giving boys skills to interrupt abusive behaviors they witness among peers) to reduce the perpetration of sexual viol
