A case of area-specific stimulus-sensitive postanoxic myoclonus.

The authors report a case of area-specific stimulus-sensitive postanoxic myoclonus and discuss possible pathophysiology. A 71-year-old man sustained cardiorespiratory arrest that lasted 10 minutes and remained unresponsive. On the first EEG obtained 8 hours after the arrest there was no cerebral electrical activity before stimulation of the trigeminal-innervated areas. Periorbital stimulation was associated with bursts of spike-wave activity and generalized myoclonic jerks, whereas other types of stimulation did not elicit any response. A second EEG obtained 32 hours later showed a nonreactive

Stapedius reflex decay in normal hearing subjects.

The fatigue of the stapedius reflex was studied in 100 normal ears. Stimulus frequencies 500 and 1000 Hz were used, and the decrement of the stapedius reflex at 5, 10, and 15 dB above the reflex threshold was estimated. No decrement at all (less than 10% decay 10 sec after the onset of a stimulus 10 dB above the reflex threshold) was present in a majority of the ears. Between 27 and 58% of the ears showed reflex decay depending on variations of different factors such as stimulus frequency, intensity of the stimulus, and the method to register the reflex. Reflex decay was more often seen at 1000

Apparent discrepancy between single-unit activity and [14C]deoxyglucose labeling in optic tectum of the rattlesnake.

Autoradiographic analysis of [1-14C]2-deoxy-D-glucose-6-phosphate ([14C]2-DG-P) accumulation in the rattlesnake brain stem and optic tectum was used in an effort to map infrared and visual neuronal pathways. Visual stimulation with a standard stimulus (a heat lamp) resulted in dense labeling of the superficial layers of the optic tectum. Infrared stimulation with the same standard stimulus resulted in labeling at the first synaptic relay, the lateral descending nucleus of the trigeminal tract (LDN-V), but not at higher levels, including the optic tectum. Systematic comparison of electrophysiol

Effect of spatial frequency of stimulus on focal macular ERGs in monkeys : fmacERG dependence on the spatial-frequency.

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of the spatial frequency of a small grating stimulus centered on the macula on the focal macular ERGs (fmacERGs) of monkeys. METHODS: fmacERGs were recorded from eight eyes of four adult monkeys (Macaca fuscata). The spatial frequency of the stimulus was changed from 0.25 to 8 cycles/degree. The luminance of the light bars was 10 cd/m(2), and the contrast was 95%. The stimulus was flashed on and off with an on duration of 100 ms and an off duration of 150 ms (4 Hz). The stimulus was centered on the fovea and subtended 12.7 degrees at the cornea. The luminance

Does a sensory processing deficit explain counting accuracy on rapid visual sequencing tasks in adults with and without dyslexia?

The experiments conducted aimed to investigate whether reduced accuracy when counting stimuli presented in rapid temporal sequence in adults with dyslexia could be explained by a sensory processing deficit, a general slowing in processing speed or difficulties shifting attention between stimuli. To achieve these aims, the influence of the inter-stimulus interval (ISI), stimulus duration, and sequence length were evaluated in two experiments. In the first that used skilled readers only, significantly more errors were found with presentation of long sequences when the ISI or stimulus durations w

Parsing the Network Mechanisms of Electroconvulsive Therapy.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the oldest and most effective forms of neurostimulation, wherein electrical current is used to elicit brief, generalized seizures under general anesthesia. When electrodes are positioned to target frontotemporal cortex, ECT is arguably the most effective treatment for severe major depression, with response rates and times superior to other available antidepressant therapies. Neuroimaging research has been pivotal in improving the field's mechanistic understanding of ECT, with a growing number of magnetic resonance imaging studies demonstrating hippocam

The influence of opioid antagonists on the discriminative stimulus effects of ethanol.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of different endogenous opioid systems in the expression of ethanol's discriminative stimulus effects in a two-lever operant drug discrimination paradigm. Wistar rats trained to make differential responses following the administration of ethanol (1 g/kg, i.p.) or saline. The correct response (fixed-ratio schedule; FR10) resulted in the presentation of food. Once rats had acquired the discrimination an ethanol dose-response test was conducted. The effects of opioid antagonists on the discrimination were assessed by administering the mu-op

Behavioral specializations of SI and SII cortex: a comparative examination of the neural logic of touch in rats, cats, and other mammals.

In what ways do passive touch and active touch require particular properties of cortical physiology? Because it is not easy to make predictions "bottom up" from neurophysiology and anatomy to behavior, there have been surprises in studying behavioral deficits following selective ablations of SI versus SII. For example, in earlier research on cats, unilateral ablation of SI unexpectedly had no effect on passive touch but did cause contralateral losses in posture and movement; it was ablation of SII plus subjacent cortex that led to contralateral losses in passive touch. In contrast, in a recent

Distortion product emissions in humans. II. Relations to acoustic immittance and stimulus frequency and spontaneous otoacoustic emissions in normally hearing subjects.

Multifrequency and multicomponent evaluations of aural acoustic immittance, including tympanometry and acoustic reflex testing, were performed on 44 normal ears to examine the influence of middle ear functioning on the generation and detection of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPEs). In the same ears, the prevalence and parametric features of spontaneous and stimulus frequency emissions were also assessed so that their relationship to the detection "thresholds" and amplitudes of corresponding DPEs could be determined. The general outcome was that none of the examined features of aco

Category structure guides the formation of neural representations.

Perceptual variability is often viewed as having multiple benefits in object learning and categorization. Despite the abundant results demonstrating benefits such as increased transfer of knowledge, the neural mechanisms underlying variability as well as the developmental trajectories of how variability precipitates changes to category boundaries are unknown. By manipulating an individual's exposure to variability of novel, metrically organized categories during an fMRI-adaptation paradigm, we were able to assess the functional differences between similarity and variability in category learnin

Dopamine and performance in a reinforcement learning task: evidence from Parkinson's disease.

The role dopamine plays in decision-making has important theoretical, empirical and clinical implications. Here, we examined its precise contribution by exploiting the lesion deficit model afforded by Parkinson's disease. We studied patients in a two-stage reinforcement learning task, while they were ON and OFF dopamine replacement medication. Contrary to expectation, we found that dopaminergic drug state (ON or OFF) did not impact learning. Instead, the critical factor was drug state during the performance phase, with patients ON medication choosing correctly significantly more frequently tha

The discriminative stimulus and subjective effects of d-amphetamine in humans.

Seventeen normal, healthy adults were trained to discriminate between orally administered d-amphetamine (AMP; 10 mg) and placebo. Standardized subjective effects questionnaires were used to examine the relationship between the subjective and discriminative stimulus effects of AMP. Seven of the subjects were able to learn the discrimination reliably. These seven "discriminators" did not differ from the ten "nondiscriminators" in their subjective ratings of mood in the absence of drug. Discriminators were generally more sensitive than nondiscriminators to the subjective effects of AMP, although

Recovery nystagmus.

Secondary nystagmus is frequently seen following cessation of prolonged unidirectional vestibular stimulation. It is explained on the basis of an adaptation during the application of the stimulus which leads to an apparent stimulus in the opposite direction when the stimulus is removed. The same phenomenon would be expected with vestibular disease when after a period of adaptation to the vestibular asymmetry, the affected ear recovers some or all of its function. The seondary nystagmus in this instance beats toward the affected ear and has been termed recovery nystagmus because it is generated

Intraparietal sulcus maintains working memory representations of somatosensory categories in an adaptive, context-dependent manner.

Working memory (WM) representations are generally known to be influenced by task demands, but it is not clear whether this extends to the somatosensory domain. One way to investigate the influence of task demands is with categorization paradigms, wherein either a single stimulus or an associated category is maintained in WM. In the somatosensory modality, category representations have been identified in the premotor cortex (PMC) and the intraparietal sulcus (IPS). In this study we used multivariate-pattern-analysis with human fMRI data to investigate whether the WM representations in the PMC,

Marked decrease of LSD-induced stimulus control in serotonin transporter knockout mice.

RATIONALE: Based upon extensive studies in the rat, it has been suggested that stimulus control by LSD is mediated by 5-HT2A receptors, with serotonergic receptors of the 5-HT1A and 5-HT2C subtypes playing modulatory roles. In genetically modified mice lacking the serotonin transporter (SERT), 5-HT2A receptor density is decreased and, at a functional level, the head-twitch response following the administration of DOI, an index of activation of 5-HT2A receptors, is reduced. Taken together, these studies led us to hypothesize that the efficacy of LSD in establishing stimulus control is diminishe

Lesions in the cerebellum impact cross-modal temporal predictions.

The cerebellum (CE) supports the encoding of the precise sensory event timing and the generation of temporal predictions. Here we investigated whether focal CE lesions impact temporal predictions in a cross-modal context. Individuals with CE lesion (n = 9) and healthy-matched controls (HC) were presented with visuo-auditory stimulus pairs, presented in a temporally regular (predictable) or irregular (unpredictable) manner while EEG was recorded. We hypothesized cross-modal temporal predictions to be mediated by pre-stimulus cerebello-cortical beta-band (12-25 Hz) activity. In turn, we expected

Neural responses in parietal and occipital areas in response to visual events are modulated by prior multisensory stimuli.

The effect of multi-modal vs uni-modal prior stimuli on the subsequent processing of a simple flash stimulus was studied in the context of the audio-visual 'flash-beep' illusion, in which the number of flashes a person sees is influenced by accompanying beep stimuli. EEG recordings were made while combinations of simple visual and audio-visual stimuli were presented. The experiments found that the electric field strength related to a flash stimulus was stronger when it was preceded by a multi-modal flash/beep stimulus, compared to when it was preceded by another uni-modal flash stimulus. The basolateral amygdala complex and perirhinal cortex represent focal and peripheral states of information processing in rats.

We previously identified the roles of the basolateral amygdala complex (BLA) and perirhinal cortex (PRh) in sensory preconditioning in male and female rats (Wong et al., 2025). Here, we used variations of a sensory preconditioning protocol to test a general theory that the BLA and PRh represent focal and peripheral states of attention, respectively. We specifically tested predictions derived from the theory regarding when learning about a stimulus that signals danger will be disrupted by BLA or PRh infusions of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist, DAP5. Consistent with the the

Images of illusory motion in primary visual cortex.

Illusory motion can be generated by successively flashing a stationary visual stimulus in two spatial locations separated by several degrees of visual angle. In appropriate conditions, the apparent motion is indistinguishable from real motion: The observer experiences a luminous object traversing a continuous path from one stimulus location to the other through intervening positions where no physical stimuli exist. The phenomenon has been extensively investigated for nearly a century but little is known about its neurophysiological foundation. Here we present images of activations in the prima

Linking the Brain with Behavior: The Neural Dynamics of Success and Failure in Goal-directed Behavior.

The human brain is extremely flexible and capable of rapidly selecting relevant information in accordance with task goals. Regions of frontoparietal cortex flexibly represent relevant task information such as task rules and stimulus features when participants perform tasks successfully, but less is known about how information processing breaks down when participants make mistakes. This is important for understanding whether and when information coding recorded with neuroimaging is directly meaningful for behavior. Here, we used magnetoencephalography to assess the temporal dynamics of informat
