Identification of suitable areas for African swine fever occurrence in china using geographic information system-based multi-criteria analysis.

African swine fever (ASF) is a hemorrhagic and fatal disease of domestic pigs and wild boars caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV). There is neither effective treatment nor vaccine at present, and thus this disease has led to major economic losses and adverse impacts on the livelihoods of stakeholders involved in the pork food system in China. In this study, a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) method based on a geographic information system (GIS) was used to identify suitable areas for ASF occurrence in China. Ten spatial risk factors regarding ASF epidemic in China were identif

Geographic distribution of canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection in stray dogs of eastern Romania.

A survey was conducted in the eastern part of Romania to assess the prevalence and geographical distribution of Dirofilaria immitis in dogs. Plasma samples were collected from 458 stray dogs hosted in shelters in 8 counties and tested serologically for the presence of heartworm. In addition, 45 blood samples from dogs of a shelter in Galati city were examined by the modified Knott and multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques. The immmunological assay showed a heartworm infection prevalence of 8.9% in the dogs. Optical density results for positive samples ranged between 0.217 and 2.

Environmental exposure and cancer prevention in the Czech Republic.

Cancer risk is predominantly shaped by environmental exposures interacting with genetic susceptibility, yet modifiable non-genetic determinants remain insufficiently characterised. The human exposome framework promotes a comprehensive, life-course approach to studying chemical, biological, and physical exposures alongside socioeconomic and psychosocial factors, but it is underutilised in cancer research. Systematically mapping biomarkers of exposure to each hallmark of cancer could provide a powerful strategy to identify modifiable risk factors with translational relevance. Czechia, with its p

Interactive spatial data analysis in medical geography.

Interactive spatial data analysis involves the use of software environments that permit the visualization, exploration and, perhaps, modelling of geographically-referenced data. Such systems are of obvious value in epidemiological research, both of an environmental and geographical nature. There is an increasing number of such software environments available on a variety of platforms and operating systems. This paper considers the use of the proprietary Geographical Information System, ARC/INFO, in a spatial analysis context, showing how the spatial analytic tools that may be added to it can b

Temporal, seasonal, and spatial patterns of Mpox in the DRC, 2002-2022: longitudinal surveillance study.

INTRODUCTION: Mpox has shown increasing incidence and geographic spread since its first identification in the Democratic Republic of the\001 Congo (DRC) in 1970. METHODOLOGY: We analyzed weekly mpox surveillance data reported from 2002-2022 in the DRC. Temporal trends were assessed using time-series decomposition to separate secular trends, seasonal patterns, and residual variation. Change-point analysis identified distinct transmission phases. Spatial trends were analyzed through thematic mapping of incidence rates across Health Zones.\001 RESULTS: Between 2002 and 2022, a total of 55,072 su

Nationwide antibiotic resistance mapping of Helicobacter pylori in Korea: A prospective multicenter study.

INTRODUCTION: The eradication rates for Helicobacter pylori have decreased in Korea although the prevalence of this bacterium has also decreased. Antibiotic resistance is likely to be a crucial factor in H. pylori eradication success, and we therefore mapped these resistance patterns nationwide in Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five hundred and ninety adult subjects were prospectively enrolled from 2017 to 2018 from 15 centers across six geographic areas of Korea. A total of 580 biopsy tissues had been sampled from these patients during an upper endoscopy and were frozen at -80°C and delivered

Tracing the environmental footprint of the Burkholderia pseudomallei lipopolysaccharide genotypes in the tropical "Top End" of the Northern Territory, Australia.

The Tier 1 select agent Burkholderia pseudomallei is an environmental bacterium that causes melioidosis, a high mortality disease. Variably present genetic markers used to elucidate strain origin, relatedness and virulence in B. pseudomallei include the Burkholderia intracellular motility factor A (bimA) and filamentous hemagglutinin 3 (fhaB3) gene variants. Three lipopolysaccharide (LPS) O-antigen types in B. pseudomallei have been described, which vary in proportion between Australian and Asian isolates. However, it remains unknown if these LPS types can be used as genetic markers for geospa

Developing a continental atlas of the distribution and trypanosomal infection of tsetse flies (Glossina species).

BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies (Genus: Glossina) are the sole cyclical vectors of African trypanosomoses. Despite their economic and public health impacts in sub-Saharan Africa, it has been decades since the latest distribution maps at the continental level were produced. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is trying to address this shortcoming through the Atlas of tsetse and African animal trypanosomosis. METHODS: For the tsetse component of the Atlas, a geospatial database is being assembled which comprises information on the distribution and trypanosomal infection of Glos

Fluoroscopic-guided in vivo gastric mapping for assessment of gastric carcinoma.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The authors seek to determine if a new method of combining fluoroscopy and nasogastric biopsy can demonstrate the existence and boundary limits of a known gastric carcinoma or its premalignant conditions. The study is performed in hopes of avoiding unnecessary surgery or limiting resection. METHODS: Two cases are presented to illustrate the technique. The first had a known gastric carcinoma; the other had adenomatous change in the antrum. After topical anesthesia was applied, a nasogastric tube with a coaxial biopsy forceps was inserted. Multiple biopsies were taken

[The spread of Phlebotomus papatasi Scop., 1786 through the territory of Central Asia and southern Kazakhstan].

The data on distribution of the main vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) Phlebotomus papatasi through Central Asia and southern Kazakhstan are presented. The highest indices of density of this species (100 and more specimen per stick trap) were observed only in the Tejen oasis, rather high ones (1-10, 10-100) in the river valleys and at the foothill, and the lowest one (0.01-0.1)--over the desert territory where ZCL was not practically found. Using these data 2 maps were prepared. The first map shows the pattern of Ph. papatasi geographical distribution with the use of a relative

Treatment Outcomes of Tuberculosis in the Eastern Cape: Clinical and Socio-Demographic Predictors from Two Rural Clinics.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, with South Africa among the highest-burden countries. The Eastern Cape is particularly affected due to poverty, HIV co-infection, and weak health systems. Understanding treatment outcomes and their determinants is required to achieve the WHO End TB Strategy targets. The objective of this study was to examine treatment outcomes for tuberculosis (TB) in both rural and urban clinics within the Eastern Cape Province. We aimed to identify the socio-demographic, clinical, and geographic factors that influence treatment

Spatial modelling and the prediction of Loa loa risk: decision making under uncertainty.

Health decision-makers working in Africa often need to act for millions of people over large geographical areas on little and uncertain information. Spatial statistical modelling and Bayesian inference have now been used to quantify the uncertainty in the predictions of a regional, environmental risk map for Loa loa (a map that is currently being used as an essential decision tool by the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control). The methodology allows the expression of the probability that, given the data, a particular location does or does not exceed a predefined high-risk threshold for

Global research trends in the epidemiology of allergic disorders: a bibliometric and evidence-mapping review.

INTRODUCTION: Allergic diseases are highly prevalent worldwide and contribute substantially to morbidity and health-system burden. Bibliometric and evidence-mapping approaches can provide a comprehensive overview of research productivity, collaboration patterns, thematic structure, and distribution of evidence across epidemiologic domains, thereby identifying critical knowledge gaps. This study aimed to characterize global research trends in the epidemiology of allergic disorders from 2016 to 2025 using bibliometric and science-mapping techniques, complemented by evidence mapping. METHODS: We

Geo-mapping of caries and obesity in preschool children: a Swedish register-based study.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle interventions addressing both oral health and obesity in childhood have attracted attention due to the shared risk factors. Prioritization of resources to lifestyle interventions within pediatric dental care should rely on a rational basis. We consider a dental care setting where geographically targeted interventions could be pursued, and develop an analytic approach, geo-mapping, to identify high-risk neighborhoods. METHODS: The population of interest comprised the children between 3 and 6 years old who resided in a Swedish region, Kronoberg (total population of 204,000)

Lymphatic filariasis transmission risk map of India, based on a geo-environmental risk model.

The strategy adopted by a global program to interrupt transmission of lymphatic filariasis (LF) is mass drug administration (MDA) using chemotherapy. India also followed this strategy by introducing MDA in the historically known endemic areas. All other areas, which remained unsurveyed, were presumed to be nonendemic and left without any intervention. Therefore, identification of LF transmission risk areas in the entire country has become essential so that they can be targeted for intervention. A geo-environmental risk model (GERM) developed earlier was used to create a filariasis transmission
