Denosumab-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (DRONJ) is a recently described entity that shares many common clinical and radiological features with bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ). The aim of the present study is to report a case of DRONJ affecting the anterior mandible of a 58-year-old male treated with denosumab to prevent skeletal-related events associated with prostate cancer. Conservative surgery in conjunction with antibiotic therapy and discontinuation of denosumab use were effective in managing the condition and the patient remains free of clinical and radiologi

The condylomata acuminata is a benign epithelial neoplasm induced by papillomavirus, and it is characterized by the proliferation of stratified squamous epithelial tissue that affects the anogenital and oral mucosa. It is considered to be a sexually transmitted disease and has a higher prevalence in individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus. Various therapies have been used for the removal of lesions, such as cryotherapy, surgical laser and surgical excision, which are painful and scarring. These techniques, however, do not eliminate the virus and relapses are common shortly after

PURPOSE: To present a rare case of a male dementia patient in a nursing home who swallowed a partial denture which lodged in the airway.
METHODS: During breakfast, a patient with moderate dementia experienced a sore throat, labored breathing, and difficulty swallowing. Uncertainty about the cause of these problems was exacerbated by the patient's cognitive losses, his reduced oro-motor function, and awareness of caregivers that the possible involvement of a denture of this size was unlikely. At the beginning of the third day, he developed a low-grade fever and was placed on antibiotics. A che

INTRODUCTION: Hand-Schüller-Christian disease (HSC) is the unisystem multifocal form of Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) and is primarily seen in infants and children.
CASE REPORT: An 8-year-old boy was referred for acute mandibular pain. His medical history included otic LCH and diabetes insipidus at age of 11 months. Intraorally, a pressure sensitive swelling, and radiographically, extensive bone loss were revealed on the area of lower second primary molars. The primary molars were extracted and histological examination confirmed the final diagnosis of HSC. The patient was treated with c

Histoplasmosis is an endemic systemic mycosis caused by the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. In immunocompromised patients, histoplasmosis generally occurs as an opportunistic disease, with dissemination to various organs. Cutaneous involvement is observed in 38% to 85% of cases, with oral mucosal involvement in 30% to 60% of cases. This article describes the case study of a 32-year-old woman who presented an extensive tongue ulcer due to histoplasmosis and had the HIV infection diagnosis based on laboratory tests requested by the dentist.

An alternate technique of care to prevent, arrest and manage root caries using aqueous silver fluoride followed by stannous fluoride (AgF+SnF2) in aged care is demonstrated by three case studies. With increasing age, the inability to maintain ones own oral care from dementia, illness or frailty and polypharmacy induced salivary gland hypofunction will result in dental caries becoming a progessively greater burden for the elderly. Future generations of elders will live longer and need to maintain many more teeth longer than earlier generations. Both silver diamine fluoride (SDF)and AgF+SnF2 arr

Bisphosphonates have been the first-line treatment option for osteometabolic diseases, such as osteoporosis, hypercalcaemia in malignant bone diseases, and in bone metastasis. It is possible to observe a growing number of cases of osteonecrosis of the jaws in patients using this medication, called bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws. The purpose of this study was to report a conservative treatment for bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws--Stage 2, using antibacterial solution and low-level laser therapy. At the end of the treatment, the patient presented improvement of

Parents or guardians (mean age, 40.6 years; standard deviation [SD] = 10.97 years) of children and adolescents with JIA (n = 17; mean age, 9.8 years; SD = 2.86) and parents or guardians of healthy children and adolescents (n = 15; mean age, 10.7 years; SD = 2.16) filled the short form of the Brazilian Parental-Caregiver Questionnaire (SF: 13 - B-PCPQ).

The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of permanent canine agenesis in subjects with Down syndrome (DS). Subjects with canine agenesis were determined by means of panoramic radiographs from 150 DS subjects attending a center for special care dentistry. Our results confirm the high prevalence of agenetic canines in DS (21 canines, 14%). We found specific effects on the distribution both of phenotype and of location (jaw). In subjects with a mild expression of hypodontia (phenotype nonoligodontia) agenetic canines primarily occurred in the mandibula, whereas in subjects wi

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) is an adverse effect of drugs used to treat bone metabolism diseases, such as osteoporosis and bone metastases. The present study retrospectively evaluated the clinical characteristics and evolution of BRONJ cases that were diagnosed and treated at a dental school from 2004 to 2011. During that period, 13 patients met the criteria of the study among a population of 2,342 patients with oral lesions. Of the 13 patients, 12 were females. Ten were intravenous bisphosphonate users, and nine had breast cancer as the primary disease. Eight mand

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS) seems to be unusual in black persons. The authors present an Afro-Brazilian family case report of GGS. The main complaint of the index case was a painless swelling of the left mandible, which was diagnosed as an odontogenic keratocyst. Further classical features of the Syndrome were present in this patient. Other two family members were diagnosed as cases of GGS and one of them presented 11 clinical findings characteristic of the syndrome. From the three cases reported, two of them presented five major diagnostic criteria for the GGS, and the diagnosis was only made

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has been implicated as a risk factor for development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Multiple primary sites of oral SCC associated with HCV infection occurs infrequently. This case report describes a rare presentation of multiple primary SCCs of the tongue in a patient with recurrent HCV cirrhosis status post liver transplant that required interdisciplinary medical and surgical management. It is important for oral health care providers to understand the local and systemic implications of HCV infection and perform routine clinical examinations to monitor

Gaucher disease (GD) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the absence of glucosylceramidase. The accumulation of substrates of this enzyme in the cytoplasm of cells of the phagocytary system causes skeletal and hematologic disorders, and has oral repercussions. This report describes the findings of the oral cavity of an 8-year-old diagnosed with subtype I GD who has been receiving enzyme replacement therapy for the past 6 years without interruption. The report highlights that the child had none of the most common oral disease signs and symptoms, which demonstrates the importance
