Transradial Amputee Gesture Classification Using an Optimal Number of sEMG Sensors: An Approach Using ICA Clustering.

Surface electromyography (sEMG)-based pattern recognition studies have been widely used to improve the classification accuracy of upper limb gestures. Information extracted from multiple sensors of the sEMG recording sites can be used as inputs to control powered upper limb prostheses. However, usage of multiple EMG sensors on the prosthetic hand is not practical and makes it difficult for amputees due to electrode shift/movement, and often amputees feel discomfort in wearing sEMG sensor array. Instead, using fewer numbers of sensors would greatly improve the controllability of prosthetic devi

Bilateral Latent Synergy-Informed Residual sEMG Reconstruction for Incomplete Hand Gesture Recognition in Hemiparetic Patients.

Accurate decoding of incomplete hand gestures from residual paretic surface electromyography (sEMG) remains challenging after stroke because voluntary myoelectric activity is often weak, non-stationary, and contaminated by pathological co-activation. This study proposes a Latent Synergy-Informed Purification Network (LSP-Net) for reference-guided reconstruction of residual paretic sEMG. Specifically, LSP-Net jointly models synchronous paretic- and non-paretic-side sEMG, using the non-paretic signal as both bilateral reference information and a paired waveform-level supervision target for laten

Nanofiber-assisted construction of flexible sponge sensors with engineered biomimetic structures for wearable devices and gesture recognition.

Porous flexible piezoresistive sensors are commonly used in wearable devices. To achieve excellent deformation capability, sensitive resistance changes, and stable signal input, such sensors must possess a robust skeletal structure and abundant pores. This not only effectively distributes external stress but also provides a larger contact area for conductive fillers. Inspired by leaf veins and natural concrete structures, this study developed a flexible sponge sensor with a “column-plate” architecture. This sponge utilizes sodium alginate and polyvinyl alcohol as “mortar” for its skeletal fram

A Flexible Hydrogel-Based Dual-Modal Sensor System for Intelligent Mechanical Gripping and Wearable Gesture Recognition.

The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) enables efficient mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion, offering green self-powered solutions for flexible electronics and microdevices. However, many TENG-based flexible sensors only support single-signal acquisition, failing to satisfy multimodal sensing requirements. In this work, a flexible sensor with a dual-sensing mechanism is developed, employing PVA/CS hydrogel as the triboelectric layer and PVA/CS/GL hydrogel as the electrode layer. By using TiO2-incorporated silicone rubber as the counter triboelectric layer, the output performance of the

Personalized Wrist-Forearm Static Gesture Recognition Using the Vicara Kai Controller and Convolutional Neural Network.

Predefined, user-independent gesture sets do not account for individual differences in movement patterns and physical limitations. This study presents a personalized wrist-forearm static gesture recognition system for human-computer interaction (HCI) using the Vicara KaiTM wearable controller and a convolutional neural network (CNN). Unlike the system based on fixed, predefined gestures, the proposed approach enables users to define and train their own gesture sets. During gesture recording, users may either select a gesture pattern from a predefined prompt set or create their own natural, unp

Examining Concurrent Associations Between Gesture Use, Developmental Domains, and Autistic Traits in Toddlers With Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Toddlers with Down syndrome (DS) showcase comparable or higher rates of gestures than chronological age- and language-matched toddlers without DS. Little is known about how gesture use in toddlers with DS relates to multiple domains of development, including motor, pragmatics, language, and visual reception (VR) skills. Unexplored is whether gesture use is a good marker of social communication skills in DS or if gesture development might be more reliably a marker of motor, language, pragmatics, or VR skills. This study examined the concurrent association of gesture use on other areas

Superhydrophobic, Anti-Freezing and Multi-Cross-Linked Wearable Hydrogel Strain Sensor for Underwater Gesture Recognition.

Conductive hydrogel is considered to be one of the most potential sensing materials for wearable strain sensors. However, both the hydrophilicity of polymer chains and high water content severely inhibit the potential applications of hydrogel-based sensors in extreme conditions. In this study, a multicross-linked hydrogel was prepared by simultaneously introducing a double-network matrix, multiple conductive fillers, and free-moving ions, which can withstand an ultralow temperature below -80 °C. A superhydrophobic Ecoflex layer with a water contact angle of 159.1° was coated on the hydrogel us

Post-stroke hand gesture recognition via one-shot transfer learning using prototypical networks.

BACKGROUND: In-home rehabilitation systems are a promising, potential alternative to conventional therapy for stroke survivors. Unfortunately, physiological differences between participants and sensor displacement in wearable sensors pose a significant challenge to classifier performance, particularly for people with stroke who may encounter difficulties repeatedly performing trials. This makes it challenging to create reliable in-home rehabilitation systems that can accurately classify gestures. METHODS: Twenty individuals who suffered a stroke performed seven different gestures (mass flexio

A fuzzy granular logistic regression algorithm for sEMG-based cross-individual prosthetic hand gesture classification.

Objective.Prosthetic systems are used to improve the quality of life of post-amputation patients, and research on surface electromyography (sEMG)-based gesture classification has yielded rich results. Nonetheless, current gesture classification algorithms focus on the same subject, and cross-individual classification studies that overcome physiological factors are relatively scarce, resulting in a high abandonment rate for clinical prosthetic systems. The purpose of this research is to propose an algorithm that can significantly improve the accuracy of gesture classification across individuals

A touch-free human-robot collaborative surgical navigation robotic system based on hand gesture recognition.

Robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery (RAMIS) has gained significant traction in clinical practice in recent years. However, most surgical robots rely on touch-based human-robot interaction (HRI), which increases the risk of bacterial diffusion. This risk is particularly concerning when surgeons must operate various equipment with their bare hands, necessitating repeated sterilization. Thus, achieving touch-free and precise manipulation with a surgical robot is challenging. To address this challenge, we propose a novel HRI interface based on gesture recognition, leveraging hand-keypoint re

Recovery and Fatigue Behavior of Forearm Muscles during a Repetitive Power Grip Gesture in Racing Motorcycle Riders.

Despite a reduction in the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVCisom) observed systematically in intermittent fatigue protocols (IFP), decrements of the median frequency, assessed by surface electromyography (sEMG), has not been consistently verified. This study aimed to determine whether recovery periods of 60 s were too long to induce a reduction in the normalized median frequency (MFEMG) of the flexor digitorum superficialis and carpi radialis muscles. Twenty-one road racing motorcycle riders performed an IFP that simulated the posture and braking gesture on a motorcycle. The MVCisom

Structural organization of the praxis network predicts gesture production: Evidence from healthy subjects and patients with schizophrenia.

Hand gestures are an integral part of social interactions and communication. Several imaging studies in healthy subjects and lesion studies in patients with apraxia suggest the praxis network for gesture production, involving mainly left inferior frontal, posterior parietal and temporal regions. However, little is known about the structural connectivity underlying gesture production. We recruited 41 healthy participants and 39 patients with schizophrenia. All participants performed a gesture production test, the Test of Upper Limb Apraxia, and underwent diffusion tensor imaging. We hypothesize

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of left parietal cortex facilitates gesture processing in healthy subjects.

Gesture processing deficits constitute a key symptom of apraxia, a disorder of motor cognition frequently observed after left-hemispheric stroke. The clinical relevance of apraxia stands in stark contrast to the paucity of therapeutic options available. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising tool for modulating disturbed network function after stroke. Here, we investigate the effect of parietal tDCS on gesture processing in healthy human subjects. Neuropsychological and imaging studies suggest that the imitation and matching of hand gestures involve the left inferior par

Measurement system for gesture characterization during chest physiotherapy act on newborn babies suffering from bronchiolitis.

Despite the lack of studies, chest physiotherapy (CPT) is widely used for newborn babies suffering from bronchiolitis. The limited data regarding this technique is mainly due to the difficulties making in situ measurements during the act. In the presented study, original instrumented gloves were designed and realized to perform measurements on babies during the CPT act. Custom-designed associated electronics and software were specially developed to monitor and record the forces applied by the physiotherapist's hands on the infant's chest and their trajectories. A prospective study, with babies

A NbOI2-based flexible piezoelectric sensor for acoustic signal acquisition and gesture-controlled human-machine interaction systems.

Driven by the demand for low-power sensing in wearable electronics and intelligent human-machine interaction, two-dimensional piezoelectric materials, which combine self-powered capability, mechanical flexibility, and integration compatibility, provide a promising material platform for high-performance flexible sensors. In this work, a flexible piezoelectric sensor based on two-dimensional NbOI2 was constructed on a polyimide substrate. The device exhibits stable and repeatable piezoelectric responses over bending angles from 30° to 75° and operating frequencies from 0.47 to 2.10 Hz. At a bend

A Meta-Learning Framework for Few-Shot Dynamic Hand Gesture Recognition with Soft Temporal-aware Contrastive Learning.

Few-shot learning improves data efficiency in surface electromyography (sEMG) gesture recognition, yet cross-subject and cross-posture generalization remains challenging due to nonstationary signals, electrode displacement, and time-varying within-gesture dynamics. We propose STC+Meta, a framework that couples temporally informed representation learning with efficient personalization. In pre-training, a soft temporal contrastive loss assigns adaptive weights by time lag to encourage temporal continuity while preserving short-lived discriminative transients, yielding coherent fused features fro
