Love, Listen and Learn: Grandmothers' Experiences of Grief Following Their Child's Pregnancy Loss.

OBJECTIVES: In Australia, 15-20% of pregnancies result in miscarriage, and 0.69% in stillbirth. Pregnancy loss is a distressing experience for parents, with many turning to their own parents for support. Pregnancy loss has been identified as an ambiguous loss, leading to disenfranchised grief. However little research has been conducted regarding grandparents' experiences following pregnancy loss. Much of what is known comes indirectly from family studies of grief and loss. This study aimed to explore grandparents' experiences of loss and grief, following a child's pregnancy loss. DESIGN: A gr

Grief, traumatic stress, and posttraumatic growth in women who have experienced pregnancy loss.

OBJECTIVE: Pregnancy loss is common and can be devastating for those who experience it. However, a historical focus on negative outcomes, and grief in particular, has rendered an incomplete portrait of both the gravity of the loss, and the potential for growth in its wake. Consistent with contemporary models of growth following bereavement, this study explored the occurrence of posttraumatic growth following pregnancy loss and further assessed the role of core belief disruptions and common loss context factors across perinatal grief, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and posttraumatic growth. [Utilizing grief counseling principles to assist a woman whose husband died of AIDS].

This case study report utilized the grief counseling principles proposed by Worden to elucidate the grief responses of a woman whose husband died of AIDS. It also described the nursing care provided by staff nurses to assist the woman to get through the period of grief by achieving "the four goals of grief". Fifteen in-depth interviews were performed and field notes were collected. As the study reports, the grief responses of the wife were: affective expressions, including grief, anger, guilt, self blame, anxiety, loneliness, fatigue, helplessness, and shock; physical expressions, including in

Meaning reconstruction and grief thirteen years after the Roboski massacre: A qualitative study.

This study explores the bereavement and meaning reconstruction experiences of family members who lost loved ones in the Roboski massacre, in which 34 civilians-mostly young-were killed in a cross-border airstrike in Turkey. Using a hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative design, three core themes emerged: (1) Traumatic Circumstances and Risk Factors, including the young age of the deceased, violent nature of death, and socioeconomic hardship compounded by limited institutional support; (2) Disrupted Meaning, stemming from injustice, impunity, and fractured trust in state authorities, and (3)

Navigating patient death and grief in German neurosurgical residency: a mixed-methods study.

OBJECTIVE: Neurosurgical residents encounter patient death during their training, yet the literature lacks understanding of their experiences and responses. The aim of this study was to explore how residents navigate patient death, communicate with families, and engage with coping and support mechanisms during their neurosurgical training in Germany. METHODS: The authors conducted a qualitative-dominant mixed-methods study among neurosurgical residents in Germany. The qualitative component included semistructured in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with neurosurgical residents. Th

Prolonged grief and insomnia symptoms in cancer-bereaved parents: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parents who experience the death of a child may develop a range of mental health problems including insomnia and prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Insomnia symptoms predict worsening of prolonged grief symptoms and persons with more chronic insomnia trajectories may be at risk of developing PGD. However, it remains to be established when prolonged grief and insomnia symptomatology co-occur and which potential risk factors heighten the risk of comorbid insomnia and prolonged grief. METHODS: To address these questions, we conducted a cross-sectional, registry-based survey study involvi

From loss to meaning: therapeutic group processes in parental grief after pediatric cancer.

BACKGROUND: The death of a child due to cancer constitutes one of the most devastating experiences for parents and is associated with profound emotional, relational, and existential consequences. Pediatric psycho-oncology highlights the need for interventions that go beyond symptom reduction and address grief as a complex process involving emotional expression, social connection, and meaning reconstruction. However, qualitative research exploring parents' lived experiences of grief-focused group therapy remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the impact of therapeutic group in

Perceived social support and symptoms of prolonged grief after a drug-related death.

Social network support can be important when adjusting to life after the death of a close family member or friend. However, research has yielded inconclusive results regarding the relationship between social support and complicated grief reactions. Persons bereaved after a drug-related death (DRD) are a group of people who are at high risk of developing bereavement complications. Based on a Norwegian study on DRD bereaved close family members and friends (n = 250), this study examines the association between perceived social support, societal stigma, own social withdrawal, and prolonged grief

Utrecht grief rumination scale (UGRS): Psychometric study of validation of the Portuguese version.

Grief rumination is characterized by recurring, repetitive, self-focused thoughts about the causes and consequences of loss and loss-related emotions. This cognitive process is a transdiagnostic risk factor for mental disorders, such as prolonged grief. The aim of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS). The sample consists of 242 bereaved adult participants with Portuguese nationality. Confirmatory Factor Analysis showed that the hierarchical model showed a better fit to the data. Peer loss: Posttraumatic stress, depression, and grief symptoms in a traumatized adolescent community.

In our prospective study, 168 adolescents exposed directly or indirectly to the same traumatic event-a fatal school bus accident-in which seven students were killed instantly, were assessed for post-traumatic stress, depression and grief symptoms at 2- and 18-months post-accident. Prevalence rates of likely PTSD and depression were noted across all types of physical proximity exposure: 77.6% and 48.1% respectively in the indirectly exposed group, 79.4% and 47.1% respectively in the directly in-the-area exposed group, and 77.8% and 42.1% respectively in the directly in-bus exposed group. Fear of Death and Death Acceptance Among Bereaved Adults: Associations With Prolonged Grief.

This study aimed to analyze fear of death and neutral acceptance of death after a significant loss and their associations with prolonged grief. The sample of the study included 239 bereaved participants. Time since the loss ranged from 6 to 72 months. We found that neutral acceptance of death was associated with older age, a natural cause of death, and the ability to find meaning in the death of a close one. Fear of death was negatively associated with the frequency of practicing religion. We found that fear of death but not neutral acceptance was significantly associated with prolonged grief

Maternal grief in cross-cultural context: Selective neglect, replaceable infants and lifesaving names.

Scheper-Hughes divides mothers onto "better off" vis-à-vis "poor" mothers stuck in "old" reproductive strategy with high fertility. Cultural construction of mother love allows the latter group to neglect their "worst bets" to death without grief. Based on the bio-evolutionary theory, Hrdy hints that "modern" Western mothers, guided by ethical behavior, care for unviable infants while mothers in "non-Western societies" might dispose them of due to innate responses. This article warns against such binary division of mothers. Ethnographic research indicates that notions of replaceable infants, fa

Maladaptive coping in adults who have experienced early parental loss and grief counseling.

This study compares maladaptive coping, measured as substance use, behavioral disengagement, self-blame, and emotional eating, among adults (>18 years) who have experienced early parental loss ( N = 1465 women, N = 331 men) with non-bereaved controls ( N = 515 women, N = 115 men). We also compared bereaved adults who received grief counseling ( N = 822 women, N = 190 men) with bereaved controls who had not ( N = 233 women, N = 66 men). Bereaved adults reported significantly more substance use, behavioral disengagement, and emotional eating than non-bereaved adults. Counseling participants repo

Understanding and Treating Complicated Grief: What Can We Learn from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder?

The paper outlines possible parallels between the phenomenology and treatment of complicated grief and PTSD. In particular, it explores how treatment procedures used in Cognitive Therapy for PTSD (Ehlers & Clark, 2000) may be adapted for the treatment of complicated grief. Stimulus Discrimination may be helpful in breaking the link between everyday triggers and "felt presence" memories of the deceased. Memory Updating procedures may help the patient accept that the deceased is no longer alive and no longer suffering. Reclaiming your Life procedures may help the patient access autobiographical

[Chronic grief after spontaneous abortion: results of a longitudinal study after 13 months].

Presented are follow-up results on coping with spontaneous abortion. Although the majority of women feel that this is a significant negative life event, their grief gradually decreases within 7 to 13 months. Compared to population standards they are neither depressed nor do they suffer from increased physical complaints. A subgroup of women is identified with chronic ("pathological") grief based on increased or rising levels of grief (PGS), depression (SCL-90) and physical complaints (BL). Independently from a following pregnancy these women (about 20%) report a high importance of their aborti

Grief response of the primary caregiver receiving bereavement follow-up care at home.

This study implies specific guidelines for intervention. It appears that bereavement follow-up may lessen the grief response at 13 months. Therefore, hospice programs should continue this valuable service. Follow-up interventions should focus on the factors which proved significant: rumination, loss of control, and death anxiety. The study also provided the beginnings of a risk assessment tool for bereaved individuals. Increased age was proved to be a risk factor related to a greater grief response. Although most of the literature indicates women are at a higher risk early in the bereavement p

The Relationship of Grief Reactions with Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies and Intolerance of Uncertainty in Adults.

Background/Objectives: Grief following the death of a loved one may be associated with cognitive emotion regulation strategies and responses to uncertainty. This study examined the relationships between grief, cognitive emotion regulation strategies, and intolerance of uncertainty among adults who had lost a loved one and whether grief differed according to demographic and loss-related characteristics. Methods: The sample comprised 304 adults aged 18-65 years who had experienced the death of a loved one 6-24 months previously. Data were collected using the Demographic Information Form, Grief S

Interventions for raising public awareness on end-of-life, death, and grief: A scoping review.

This scoping review aimed to map and synthesize the evidence on interventions aimed at improving the general population's grief and death literacy. Adhering to PRISMA-ScR guidelines, 11 databases were searched for peer-reviewed studies focusing on the training provided to the general public to improve death and grief literacy. Fourteen studies met the inclusion criteria. The training programs found in these studies aim to raise awareness and promote best practices in assisting bereaved individuals by targeting various community segments, such as individuals from educational settings, caregiver

The Range of Response to Loss: an innovative theory of grief and a framework for use in practice and research.

This paper describes the development and authentication of the Range of Response to Loss (RRL), an innovative theoretical model for understanding loss and grief. The model references existing theories on loss and grief while also providing a paradigm shift in defining the dynamics of grief, which have then become embedded into its practice and research application. The RRL model evolved over four decades and consists of three developmental phases. Phase one comprised an intersectional analysis of my practice observations and research with existing theories of grief. This resulted in a new thre

Prolonged Grief and Perceived Mental and Physical Health: The Mediating Role of Meaning in Life.

Past research showed that bereaved individuals with higher levels of prolonged grief symptoms report poorer health. However, research addressing the downstream consequences of prolonged grief to physical health and its potential underlying mechanisms is still limited. This study explored whether meaning in life explained the associations of prolonged grief symptoms with mental and physical health outcomes. In a cross-sectional study (N = 332), participants who experienced the death of a family member, a romantic partner, or a close friend 12 months or longer ago completed an online survey. Res
