The effects of keratinocyte growth factor on healing of tympanic membrane perforations.

Tympanic membrane (TM) perforations heal by reepithelialization and fibrous layer proliferation. The rat TM model may be used to study growth factors that promote epithelialization and fibroblast proliferation, such as epidermal growth factor (EGF) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF). The authors previously evaluated the effects of FGF on tympanic membrane perforations and showed an enhanced rate of wound healing with preservation of normal structure and function. The same model was used to test keratinocyte growth factor (KGF, also called FGF-7). This growth factor has been shown to stimulate

Open Heart Surgery with Intracranial Meningioma: Case Report & Literature Review.

Meningiomas are generally considered slow growing tumours of arachnoid cell origin which remain asymptomatic for a long period of time and are usually managed conservatively by serial radiological follow-up. Only those lesions which show a potential for rapid growth are considered for surgical resection. Coronary artery bypass surgery usually involves use of cardiopulmonary bypass which incites varying degrees of systemic inflammatory response. Although some meningiomas are recognised by secretion of vasoactive substances leading to peri-lesion oedema, very little is known about the behaviour

Safety and efficacy of galactogogues: substances that induce, maintain and increase breast milk production.

Poor production of breast milk is the most frequent cause of breast lactation failure. Often, physician prescribe medications or other substances to solve this problem. The use of galactogogues should be limited to those situations in which reduced milk production from treatable causes has been excluded. One of the most frequent indication for the use of galactogogues is the diminution of milk production in mothers using indirect lactation, particularly in the case of preterm birth. The objective of this review is to analyze to the literature relating to the principal drugs used as galactogogu

Comparative effects of growth factors on fibroblasts of Dupuytren's tissue and normal palmar fascia.

Recent experimental evidence implicates various growth factors in the pathophysiology of Dupuytren's disease. This study describes a technique to produce an in vitro cell culture system from both normal palmar fascia and Dupuytren's fascia. The cells were separately exposed to basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta), and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), after which the effects of these growth factors on proliferation rate and collagen production were determined. Basic FGF and PDGF were found to be mitogenic for both cell types, and TGF-beta was a

Facing the future of substance use disorders treatment in Vietnam - A case study for international development and cooperation.

Vietnam made progress transitioning from a criminal justice to a health treatment response for substance use disorders (SUD) in recent years. This case study describes the evolution of Vietnam's SUD treatment system from 2005 to 2020 to understand and learn from the phases of its development. The case study is based on data from a predesigned interview guide for 47 respondents, literature and policy desk review and direct experience of the authors. Vietnam saw remarkable growth of opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment from 2005 when methadone was unavailable, to 2020 with 335 methadone clinics i

A rare cause of acromegaly: ectopic production of growth hormone-releasing factor by a bronchial carcinoid tumor.

Ectopic production of growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF) is a rare cause of acromegaly. In addition to its production by gangliocytomas, both hypothalamic and intrasellar, in rare cases various neuroendocrine neoplasms produce the substance, with resultant growth hormone cell hyperplasia of the pituitary and acromegaly. We report an endocrinologically well-documented case of a GRF-producing bronchial carcinoid tumor in which the associated acromegaly was cured by lobectomy.

Effects of hormonal growth factors on colony formation and chemosensitivity of human tumors in agarose.

Because low plating efficiencies of most human cancers severely limit the number of successful chemosensitivity tests that can be performed, we studied the growth-enhancing effects of hormonal growth factors on a variety of solid tumors. Dose-response studies with progesterone and estradiol indicated no benefit from adding these substances to the culture medium. This was true whether progesterone or estradiol was used alone or in the presence of other hormones. By contrast, epidermal growth factor (EGF) at concentrations from 10 to 100 ng/ml increased colony numbers up to 10-fold. Although ins

Growth factors and their receptors in the olfactory system.

The olfactory epithelium is unique in the mammalian nervous system as it is a site of continual neurogenesis. Constant turnover of primary sensory neurons in the periphery results in continuous remodeling of neuronal circuits and synapses in the olfactory bulb throughout life. Most of the specific mechanisms and factors that control and modulate this process are not known. Recent studies suggest that growth factors, and their receptors, may play a crucial role in the development and continuous regeneration of olfactory neurons, i.e. particularly in neuronal proliferation, neurite outgrowth, fa

Embryonic expression pattern of the murine figf gene, a growth factor belonging to platelet-derived growth factor/vascular endothelial growth factor family.

Morphogenesis, growth and differentiation of tissues and organs require cell interactions mediated by signal molecules, their receptors and transcriptional control systems. c-fos-induced growth factor (figf) is a new secreted member of the platelet-derived growth factor/vascular endothelial growth factor (PDGF/VEGF) family with mitogenic activity on fibroblasts. Here we studied figf expression during murine embryonic development. figf expression was detected with a dynamic pattern in several body structures and organs such as limb buds, acoustic ganglion, teeth, heart, anterior pituitary as we

Stem cell factor, a novel cutaneous growth factor for mast cells and melanocytes.

Mechanisms affecting mast cell and melanocyte growth and function are still poorly understood. This report summarizes the current state of knowledge on a recently described growth factor for both these cell types and for primitive haematopoietic stem cells. Stem cell factor (SCF), also named mast cell growth factor or kit-ligand, has only recently been cloned and has been shown to be encoded on human chromosome 12. It may be of specific importance in cutaneous physiology and pathology since it is produced by several cell types in the skin (e.g. fibroblasts, keratinocytes, endothelial cells) an

Neuroblastoma growth factors derived from neurofibroma (NF1): participation of uridine in a neuroblastoma growth.

Human glioma cell extracts were found to elicit a marked growth-promoting activity on human neuroblastoma cells. This activity was also detected in the extracts of neurofibroma type 1 (NF1; von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis) comprising aberrant Schwann cell growth. The purified substance from the NF1 extracts by HPLC on ODS columns was identical to a pyrimidine nucleoside, uridine, the chemical structure of which was identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The authentic uridine showed a strong growth-promoting activity on human neuroblastoma cells. Other purine or pyrimidine nuc

Substance P modifies the 6-hydroxydopamine induced alteration of postnatal development of central noradrenaline neurons.

Systemic treatment of new-born rats with the catecholamine neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine leads to a permanent and selective alteration of the postnatal development of the central noradrenaline neurons, in particular of the locus coeruleus system. The changes involve a pronounced and permanent degeneration of distant nerve terminal projections (e.g. in the cerebral cortex and spinal cord) and a hyperinnervation of regions close to the noradrenaline perikarya (e.g. in the cerebellum and pons-medulla). Substance P administered intracisternally was found to counteract significantly both the 6-hydro

[Bone in malignant disorders: introduction].

Patients harboring cancer and other tumors frequently exhibit such bone morbidity as metabolic bone diseases and bone metastases. Cancers produce and secrete cytokines and growth factors for their growth and survival. Cytokines are also produced by reacting immune systems. Those humoral factors, when produced in a sizable quantity, enter into the general circulation and become a causative principle for paraneoplastic syndrome. An example is parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) for humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy, and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) for oncogenic osteomalacia. In

The molecular basis of keloid and hypertrophic scar formation.

Excess scar formation secondary to traumatic or surgical injuries can have devastating consequences, ranging from body disfigurement to organ dysfunction. Hypertrophic scars and keloids are skin fibrotic conditions that can be caused by minor insults to skin, such as acne or ear piercing, or by severe injuries such as burns. Differences between keloids, hypertrophic scars and normal scars include distinct scar appearance, histologic morphology and cellular function in response to growth factors. Recent advances in our understanding of the wound healing process reveal possible causes for hypert

Addiction in pregnancy.

Substance abuse in pregnancy has increased over the past three decades in the United States, resulting in approximately 225,000 infants yearly with prenatal exposure to illicit substances. Routine screening and the education of women of child bearing age remain the most important ways to reduce addiction in pregnancy. Legal and illegal substances and their effect on pregnancy discussed in this review include opiates, cocaine, alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and amphetamines. Most literature regarding opiate abuse is derived from clinical experience with heroin and methadone. Poor obstetric outcom
