Revisiting Standard and Novel Therapeutic Approaches in Halitosis: A Review.

Halitosis, or bad breath, is an oral health problem characterized by an unpleasant malodor emanating from the oral cavity. This condition can have different origins and causes a negative burden in social interactions, communication and quality of life, and can in uncommon cases be indicative of underlying non-oral non-communicable diseases. Most cases of halitosis are due to inadequate oral hygiene, periodontitis and tongue coating, yet the remaining proportion of cases are due to ear-nose-throat-associated (10%) or gastrointestinal/endocrine (5%) disorders. For this reason, the diagnosis, tre

[Correction of halitosis in chronic inflammatory diseases of the oropharynx in adults].

UNLABELLED: Approximately 25% of the world population suffer from halitosis, making it a significant medico-social issue. It is one of the clinical signs of chronic inflammatory diseases of the oropharynx and is commonly caused by the persistence some bacteria in the oral cavity and in the oropharynx. These in turn facilitate formation of volatile sulphur compounds. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the probiotic strain Streptococcus salivarius K12 in the Bactoblis product in exacerbation of chronic inflammatory diseases of the oropharynx. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 45 patien

Effect of essential oils on oral halitosis treatment: a review.

Halitosis is a very common condition which may affect up to 30% of the population. In about 90% of the cases, halitosis originates in the mouth due to inadequate plaque control, periodontal disease, dry mouth, faulty restorations, and in particular due to excessive bacterial growth. Oral malodor is mainly caused by a microbial degradation of amino acids into volatile, bad-smelling gases (volatile sulfur compounds - VSCs). Management of oral malodor is directed primarily at managing and reducing the VSC-producing bacteria count as well as masking the odor. Essential oils have been used for this

Effect of IgY on Periodontitis and Halitosis Induced by Fusobacterium nucleatum.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a morbific agent in periodontitis and halitosis. Egg yolk antibody (IgY) was obtained from egg yolks from chickens stimulated with F. nucleatum. This study was to assess the effectiveness of IgY on periodontitis and halitosis caused by F. nucleatum in vitro and in vivo. The growth of F. nucleatum was inhibited (p <0. 05) by different concentrations of IgY in vitro and the results of a Halimeter show volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) were reduced to 904 ± 57 ppb at a concentration 40 mg/ml of IgY. The changes of fatty acids of F. nucleatum were determined using GC-MS.

The impact of chewing gum on halitosis parameters: a systematic review.

This study aimed to analyze the impact of chewing gum on halitosis parameters. Three databases were searched with the following focused question: 'Can chewing gum additionally reduce halitosis parameters, such as organoleptic scores and volatile sulfur compounds (VSC), when compared to a control treatment'? Controlled clinical trials presenting at least two halitosis measurements (organoleptic scores and/or VSC) were included. Ten studies were included, and different active ingredients were used. One study was performed using a chewing gum without any active ingredient. Chewing gum containing

Evaluation of a halitosis clinic over a period of eleven years.

About every fourth individual suffers at leasttemporarily from oral malodor. The most frequentcause of it is the oral cavity, in particular thetongue coating. In professional halitosis clinics, findings and diagnoses are discussed with thepatients, and individual therapy concepts are designed. Currently, there are only few ev alua- tions of such clinics, which moreover are con- fined to a period of a few weeks or months. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the halitosis clinic of the University Center of Dental Medicine Basel o ver a period of eleven years. For the purpose of a recall,

Therapeutic Effectiveness of a Dietary Supplement for Management of Halitosis in Dogs.

Halitosis is a common complaint involving social and communicational problems in humans and also affects the pet-owner relationship. In this randomized placebo-controlled crossover clinical evaluation, we assessed the effectiveness of a dedicated dietary supplement to improve chronic halitosis in 32 dogs of different breeds and ages. This protocol describes how to evalute the presence of oral volatile suphur compunds, e.g. methyl mercaptan, hydrogen sulfide and dimethyl sulfide, by means of a portable gas chromatograph device coupled with a syringe, which was used to collect the breath, and a

The delusion of halitosis: experience at an eastern Nigerian tertiary hospital.

BACKGROUND: Halitosis is a recognized problem in dental practice. Some individuals have the belief that they have offensive mouth odour which neither the dental clinician nor any other person can perceive. This condition is known as delusional halitosis. Delusional halitosis can be classified as either Pseudo halitosis or Halitophobia depending on the response to initial treatment. Halitophobia is an olfactory reference syndrome and is a psychological condition that the dental surgeon is ill equipped to treat alone. This study aimed to analyse patients diagnosed with delusional halitosis, high

[Halitosis in two children caused by a foreign body in the nose].

In two boys aged 4.5 and 1.5 years with halitosis a nasal foreign body was found. After removal the foetor disappeared. Little is known about the epidemiology of halitosis in children. Apart from specific odours with certain systemic disorders, local pathology such as chronic sinusitis, upper and lower respiratory tract infections and to a lesser degree gastrointestinal disorders may be the cause of the offensive smell. As in adults, bad breath in children is usually related to poor oral hygiene or disease of the oral cavity. The first-line treatment is proper oral hygiene and if necessary den

Effects of a two-phase oil-water mouthwash on halitosis.

Many oral microorganisms possess hydrophobic outer surfaces. A two-phase, oil-water mouthwash has, therefore, recently been developed to remove such oral microorganisms. The oil phase consists of olive oil and other essential oils. The aqueous phase includes cetylpyridinium chloride, which is a disinfectant that promotes the adhesion of microorganisms to oil droplets. This study determined the effects of this mouthwash on the production of volatile sulfide in vivo and in vitro. Neither rinsing with water nor brushing teeth decreased the concentration of sulfide in mouth air at 3.5 h after trea

Delusional halitosis. Review of the literature and analysis of 32 cases.

Halitosis, or bad breath, is a feature of some oral and systemic diseases. However, there are apparently healthy individuals who complain of having bad breath which no one else can smell and for which no local or systemic condition can be found. This condition, referred to in this article as delusional halitosis, has identical features with a psychiatric disorder, monosymptomatic hypochondriacal psychosis. This paper reviews the literature on halitosis and oral psychogenic disorders and presents an analysis of 32 cases of delusional halitosis that presented at the University of Benin Dental Ho

[Development of breath detector for halitosis (1). Theory and method].

A Breath Detector was developed and its clinical application was investigated. It is very difficult to judge how one's own breath smells. The sense of smell is the most unreliable of the senses and has still not been scientifically clarified. Everyone who tried to accurately express the strength and the character of some smell will be puzzled to see the difficulty of expression. A smell on one's breath is actually impossible to expressed on the same scale as for weight or length. On a laboratory basis, it is certainly possible to clarify the concentration and the mass of some odor by using gra
