Opportunistic Screening for Bone Demineralization by Whole Body CT in a Red-Handed Howler Monkey (Alouatta belzebul) Under Human Care.

An eight-year-old male red-handed howler monkey (Alouatta belzebul) underwent whole-body computed tomography for gastrointestinal signs. Quantitative CT of the lumbar vertebrae opportunistically revealed severe bone hypoattenuation, demineralization, and deteriorated trabecular architecture. This incidental diagnosis of metabolic bone disease was directly attributed to chronic inadequate management conditions, specifically a severely imbalanced diet and insufficient sunlight exposure in captivity.

Automated Bone Age Assessment and Adult Height Prediction from Pediatric Hand Radiographs via a Cascaded Deep Learning Framework.

Bone age assessment and adult height prediction are essential for evaluating pediatric growth. Traditional methods rely on manual radiographic interpretation, which is subjective, time-consuming, and prone to inter-observer variability. This study presents an automated approach using a cascaded deep learning model to assess bone age and predict adult height from pediatric hand radiographs, aiming to improve diagnostic objectivity and efficiency. A total of 8,242 left-hand radiographs from Chinese children were retrospectively collected. Bone age was annotated by experienced pediatric endocrino

Microvascular ALT-Flap Reconstruction for Distal Forearm and Hand Defects: Outcomes and Single-Case Application of a Bone-Anchored Venous Anastomosis.

Background: Reconstruction of distal forearm and hand soft tissue defects remains a complex surgical challenge due to the functional and aesthetic significance of the region. Several flap options have been established such as the posterior interosseous artery flap (PIA) or temporalis fascia flap (TFF), yet the anterolateral thigh flap (ALT) has gained increasing attention for its versatility and favorable risk profile. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 12 patients (7 males, 5 females; mean age 51.8 years) who underwent free microvascular ALT reconstruction for distal forearm and hand defect

Association between hand grip strength and bone mineral density in US adolescents aged 12-19 years: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have shown that grip strength reflects not only muscle function but also relates to bone mineral density (BMD) in adults. However, its association with BMD in adolescents remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the correlation between grip strength and BMD among US adolescents aged 12-19 years. METHODS: Data were drawn from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014, including 1,752 adolescents aged 12-19 years. Combined grip strength was defined as the sum of the maximum readings from each hand using a hand-held dynamometer. BMD o

An X-ray bone age assessment method for hands and wrists of adolescents in Western China based on feature fusion deep learning models.

The epiphyses of the hand and wrist serve as crucial indicators for assessing skeletal maturity in adolescents. This study aimed to develop a deep learning (DL) model for bone age (BA) assessment using hand and wrist X-ray images, addressing the challenge of classifying BA in adolescents. The results of this DL-based classification were then compared and analyzed with those obtained from manual assessment. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 688 hand and wrist X-ray images of adolescents aged 11.00-23.99 years from western China, which were randomly divided into training set, validation

Biceps Transfer to FDP-FPL Tendon Augmented with Fascia Lata to Restore Hand Function in Neglected Fracture Treated by Traditional Bone-setters.

Neglected bone fractures owing to the traditional bone-setter practices could lead to devastating complications. We aimed to describe the procedure and outcome of fascia lata augmentation for a forearm massive soft tissue loss case. Here, we report a case of a 14-year-old boy who presented to our hospital with a history of neglected right forearm fracture 4 years prior. He had been treated by a traditional bone-setter instead of seeking professional medical help, which resulted in wide-spread infection requiring debridement and, eventually, massive soft tissue loss, wrist radial deviation defo

Forensic bone age assessment of hand and wrist joint MRI images in Chinese han male adolescents based on deep convolutional neural networks.

In Chinese criminal law, the ages of 12, 14, 16, and 18 years old play a significant role in the determination of criminal responsibility. In this study, we developed an epiphyseal grading system based on magnetic resonance image (MRI) of the hand and wrist for the Chinese Han population and explored the feasibility of employing deep learning techniques for bone age assessment based on MRI of the hand and wrist. This study selected 282 Chinese Han Chinese males aged 6.0-21.0 years old. In the course of our study, we proposed a novel deep learning model for extracting and enhancing MRI hand and
