The demise of Archbishop Wolf Dietrich--A historical note on a fatal status epilepticus documented at Salzburg in 1617.

INTRODUCTION: Wolf Dietrich of Raitenau (WD) ruled the archiepiscopal Salzburg from March 2nd 1587 to December 17th 1611. He was condemned by his successor Archbishop Markus Sittikus of Hohenems to spend his last years imprisoned at the Fortress Hohensalzburg, where he died on January 16th 1617. This historical note describes the causes of his death. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The original Latin handwriting, including the detailed medical history and the autopsy of the Archbishop's body performed by his personal physician, was analyzed in conjunction with historical handwritings provided by St. P

A potion for prolonged life? Germes' recipe, a secret handwritten note from an 18th-century Swedish physician.

BACKGROUND: Toward the end of the late Middle Ages and into the early modern era, a variety of elixirs and potions for longevity with claimed medical effects were advertised by pharmacists and distributed throughout Europe. At the same time, there was an increasing emergence of handwritten commonplace books of home remedies, first among the aristocrats and rich merchants, then later among other populations, providing basic recipes for all types of common medical disorders. From a historical-pharmacological perspective, this study seeks to analyze a handwritten note encompassing a recipe detail

The influence of right or left handedness on the ability to simulate handwritten signatures and some elements of signatures: a study of Arabic writers.

It has been widely assumed since the 1970s that right-handed writers, on average, do not write or simulate handwriting any better than left-handed writers. This study has dug deeper into that question, to find narrow language environments which left-handed and right-handed writers simulate with different degrees of success or making different types of errors. These might provide useful markers of handedness in writers or forgers. The sample of 823 native Arabic-writing adults, 763 right handed and 60 left handed, first attempted to simulate two Arabic signatures. As expected, the accuracy of t

Acupuncture for the temporary treatment of essential tremor: a case report.

This case report describes the successful, temporary treatment of essential tremor in a 74-y-old Caucasian woman, using weekly acupuncture sessions for a 10-wk period. The outcome measures included the patient's (1) subjective evaluation of her percentage of improvement before and after weekly treatments, (2) subjective evaluation of her ability to write personal checks and to hold a cup with 1 hand to drink, and (3) improved ability to write handwriting samples in the university health center. The patient continued to maintain these benefits through monthly acupuncture sessions at 12 mo after

Impaired Fine Motor Skills in Developmental Dyslexia: A Bayesian Meta-Analysis of 5 Decades of Research.

PURPOSE: Individuals with developmental dyslexia frequently exhibit impairments that extend beyond reading. Numerous studies examine fine motor skill deficits in dyslexia. The current study used meta-analysis to examine whether individuals with dyslexia show differences in motor skills when compared to age-matched individuals with neurotypical development, while also exploring possible moderators of effects. METHOD: We report findings of a Bayesian hierarchical meta-analysis evaluating evidence of co-occurring motor skills deficits in dyslexia, using literature spanning 5 decades (1970-2025).

Impaired performance of patients with writer's cramp in complex fine motor tasks.

OBJECTIVE: Writer's cramp (WC) is a task-specific focal dystonia. WC is characterized by involuntary contractions of muscles of the hand and arm during handwriting, resulting in impaired writing with exaggerated finger forces. The generalization of symptoms to other fine motor tasks is widely discussed. The aim of the study was to determine affected fine motor aspects with an extensive testing battery. METHODS: Twelve people with WC and twelve healthy controls were examined. Performance in the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test, Nine-Hole-Peg Test and 2-point discrimination was evaluated. To an

Clinical features, assessment and treatment of essential tremor.

Essential tremor is the most common of the movement disorders, being 20 times more common than Parkinson's Disease. It is characterised by postural and kinetic tremor which maximally affects the hands. It can be assessed by physiological techniques, subjective clinical methods, objective clinical methods and handicap/disability scales. Accelerometry, spirography and handwriting assessment, volumetry and handicap/disability questionnaires are commonly used methods. Primidone and propranolol are the first-line drugs. Several second-line drugs have been identified. Surgical techniques include les

Language functions in progressive supranuclear palsy.

Language functions were studied in 6 patients with clinically diagnosed progressive supranuclear palsy who conformed to the characteristic pattern of 'subcortical dementia'. Dysarthria, reading difficulties and disturbances of handwriting were present in all patients. Some patients showed additional deficits including visual dyslexia, constructional dysgraphia and an increased rate of self-corrections and misnamings in object confrontation naming. In most instances, the naming errors referred to an object visually similar to the target object, suggesting that visual misperception is the major

Primary writing tremor: a selective action tremor.

Progressive difficulty in handwriting due to jerking movements precipitated by the act of writing beginning between the ages of 8 to 54 is reported in six patients. There was no rest tremor, but three had mild postural tremor. Specific muscle activity (especially pronation of the wrist or abduction of the fingers) elicited the tremors that persisted as long as the evocative posture or muscle activity was maintained. None had a family history of tremors, but two had a history suggestive of hypoxia at birth. Unlike benign essential tremor, the movements did not respond to propranolol HCl, but mo

Impaired Retention of Motor Learning of Writing Skills in Patients with Parkinson's Disease with Freezing of Gait.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and freezing of gait (FOG) suffer from more impaired motor and cognitive functioning than their non-freezing counterparts. This underlies an even higher need for targeted rehabilitation programs in this group. However, so far it is unclear whether FOG affects the ability for consolidation and generalization of motor learning and thus the efficacy of rehabilitation. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the hallmarks of motor learning in people with FOG compared to those without by comparing the effects of an intensive motor learning program to improve ha

Hand-motor dysfunction in depression: characteristics and pharmacological effects.

Motor retardation is a relevant aspect of depression. Kinematic analysis of movements can be applied to explore which type of motor dysfunction is associated with depression and to examine motor side effects of antidepressants. Using this tool, we aimed to investigate fine motor performance in patients suffering from depression and to compare a selective noradrenaline re-uptake inhibitor (NARI) (reboxetine) and a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) (citalopram) regarding motor side effects after 4 weeks of treatment. In the first study (I), we examined 37 depressed patients and 37 he

On the use of histograms of oriented gradients for tremor detection from sinusoidal and spiral handwritten drawings of people with Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD), whose cardinal signs are tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability, gradually reduces the quality of life of the patient, making early diagnosis and follow-up of the disorder essential. This study aims to contribute to the objective evaluation of tremor in PD by introducing and assessing histograms of oriented gradients (HOG) to the analysis of handwriting sinusoidal and spiral patterns. These patterns were digitized and collected from handwritten drawings of people with PD (n = 20) and control healthy individuals (n = 20). The HOG descriptor was employ

Writing tremor after discrete cortical infarction.

BACKGROUND: Hand tremor is a rare manifestation of stroke, and writing tremor has not been reported to be produced by stroke. We describe a patient who developed a unilateral hand tremor mimicking primary writing tremor after discrete cerebral cortical infarction. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 67-year-old man developed mild right hemiparesis. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed a discrete cortical infarct in the left frontal area. After recovery of motor power, the patient showed significant right hand tremor exclusively during writing or similar motor activities including tooth brushing or shaving
